Both shows meticulously and slowly raise the stakes all the while presenting rich characters and impactful relationships along the way for maximum effect when shit hits the fan. You really feel the weight of every event, not because of what's happening per se but because of who it's happening to.

She makes a good observation about PROJECTION in writing criticism, I think that's what she describes there, characters written a certain way but the audience seeing what they WANT to see, projecting their issues, instead of taking the work as is and just experiencing it. It's a skill to watch something you might find out you're not all that into, but still being able to appreciate it despite that in some way. I've seen gorgeous, amazingly shot films with a dogshit plot lol.

True story: I watched this as it came out originally. Like it had 2 episodes the first week then one a week or something like that. I somehow got it in my head that this episode wasn't the last one. I thought there was one more. So I spent a whole week avoiding spoilers and nervously waiting for the release of the next episode, then I realized that this was the last episode of the season. I almost had a breakdown.

0:50 Irving has a sleeping problem, so he naps during the work. Sleeping kind of connects your both personality(which is why milchick doesnt let anyone nap), thats why Irving's innie in the severed floor sees the scary black glues when his outie sees the elevator.

If you go back to the first episode in Kobel's office it's asked "Is this about Helena?" It's a quick line that you would miss but catch on a rewatch. They were all in on it, that's why in the second episode Milchik is gushing to Helena about her doing this and trying to wow her with his Kier knowledge.

They show us that in the video she recorded denying her resignation request in episode 4. Notice the imperious way she says, "turn it off" to whoever's behind the camera.

I think maybe Irving's lack of sleep is not really a problem but he could be intentionally depriving himself of sleep. His outie obviously has quite a bit of knowledge about what's going on at Lumen and he could do it in order to get information to his innie. And his art in combination with the aggressive music could be a part of that plan to feed his subconciousness with information for innie Irv. By always painting the same thing excessively to make himself dream of it and that way make his innie aware of the storage room (or what they called it).

I highly doubt that Irwing could be working 8 hours severed, a therapist in the evenings AND painting the black hall all night everyday

My theory on Irving is that since he was in the military, Lumon likely tested on soldiers or some shit, so the procedure wasn’t perfected yet which could explain why he remembers the hallway to the lab as well as the paint that he dreams about when he falls asleep at work, his personal/work life is very slightly bleeding together. He could have volunteered to try it in order to forget trauma from his time serving for at least a little while maybe. I dunno if i missed anything and im prolly wrong but thats just my personal theory lmfao

My newest theory is that the higher up employees such as Ms. Cobel are severed and are living as their innies the entire time. At first watch I thought they weren’t severed. But watching you guys react, I realized that Cobel doesn’t really know how to act outside because she is an innie living her outies life. Think about it, she was de-icing her front door with a hair dryer, she forgot to put her car into park, she has no idea how to cook etc. It would make a lot of sense since Lumon would want very loyal people working those jobs, whats better than a grown person born on your conference table that’s indoctrinated the second she was born. It’s the perfect loyal employee for them. Her outie put her trust into Lumon but they basically killed her and turned her into a different person that they shaped.

I really appreciate your deep analysis and reaction to this show. It doesn't nearly get the attention it deserves, but you got my sub for reacting to it knowing you're not going to get as many views as the other mainstream shows. Season 1 of Severance is in my top 3 all time shows. Severance, Breaking Bad, Shogun and Attack on Titan are my 4 favorite shows of all time. And I watched every relevant TV show in existence. I know you reacted to all of them except AoT, and I really recommend you guys reacting to it (90, 20 min episodes. so about 40 episodes of a regular show given you watch 2 at a time 40 mins each). Viewers and new fans wise you will do excellent, but I know you guys don't really prioritize that, so I will tell you now that AoT has some of the best writing I have ever witnessed. IMO, it is the greatest piece of fiction ever written with an amazing original soundtrack that will leave you in awe. It is perfect for smart reactors like you to understand the main themes and messages of the show. If you are thinking about branching into Attack on Titan, let me know because I'm not waiting, I'm going to Patreon to binge all of them! I know you made an into to anime with Fullmetal Alchemist, which is very good but AoT is leagues ahead and I know for a fact you would LOVE it. Much love

They work on set "to ensure the script's integrity and to address any immediate changes or challenges that arise." So that is another reason writer's strikes should halt productions. If anyone changes any of the writing while production is going on during a strike, they are crossing the picket line.

What a masterpiece this series is. I agree with Maple that the Innies did accomplish a lot, maybe not everything they wanted, but in no way were their efforts wasted. The only thing I think would have worked better is if Helly had gone onstage presenting AS HELENE and denounced Lumon and Severence. That would get a lot more traction in the press and would make it really difficult for Outie Helene to retract later. But with Helly claiming to be an Innie, Helene and Lumon could downplay it and say that she had a nervous breakdown or was joking in poor taste. I mean a lot of damage was done anyway, but I feel like denouncing Lumon as Helene would carry more weight and would make it difficult for them to claim temporary insanity.

I'm really interested in the impact Hellies outburst will have. I think they'll just laugh it off as a joke, although that might be hard seeing as cobel rugby tackles her! Maybe they will just pass it off as a chip malfunction which will hinder the company but not do massive damage. Its also a bit unclear who is at the gala, it might be mostly sympathetic Lumen allies, though its not just Lumen probably because they are pushing the whole Helly thinks Severance is great angle. Watching this again it seems like Mark will have the most impact. Him shouting 'she's alive!' people might think is the baby though hopefully his sister realises what's going on. No idea how Lumen will get around that. He also asked them to send in investigators etc. I hope they do something like try to get an undercover person into Lumen, or even someone who has a modified chip who doesn't get severed but can pretend to be down there.

Is it weird to say that I'd have been entirely happy if that was the ending to the show? Like, I had thought before watching it was a one and done, and I still found it really satisfying, even though it's a very open ending. There's so many ways the show can sprawl and delve deeper in subsequent seasons into what Lumon is, what Cobel and Milchik are doing, how Gemma is still alive and... but none of it is necessarily confusing left open like this because they've put the work in this season to satirise and commentate on corporate hierarchies, the workplace, anti-worker political legislation, and so on... the ambiguity in itself is a strength right now as it could apply to so many real-world examples. The reason it's satisfying and not frustrating is that the innies ultimately succeeded in their goals at their end, in a way where it's unlikely they can be ignored. Helly made a big public denouncement; Mark uncovered that Lumon has his wife (Did they fake her death? Do they use essentially reanimated dead people that never leave?) and pulling at that thread will only lead to bigger revelations; and more personally, Irving found Burt and will definitely make contact, whatever that looks like afterwards. Maybe it's because I'm cynical about mystery box shows which feel the need to spin the wheels to draw out several seasons of its mystery, but I find the notion of a full stop "They succeeded and will blow it all up" and imagining what might come next just as rewarding as actually getting more of the story.

Just finished the episode and found this video. Incredible! Besides HelIy being the CEO`s daughter, the bigger surprise is that I figured irving chose severance because he is a company man and had a cult like infatuation with Lumen, which is why his innie was the way he was. I thought he was going to snitch to the bad guys, but I think it's more of the opposite now. Irving outtie has been playing the long game. His outtie knows some shit and has developed a means to share information together, is trying to blow the whole thing apart.

Knowing how to drive isn't the same thing as e.g. recalling a specific event. We know how to drive because it's stored long-term as a "procedural memory" - the innies also know how to talk, walk, run, use a computer keyboard and so forth. Thus, it seems reasonable to assume that the implants do not affect procedural memory. Also, there seems to be a lot of different things Lumon can do with the implants - and besides, considering that it's an implant I wouldn't rule out that it can act as a filter. Exactly what gets filtered out could possibly depend on what "mode" the implant is in. Thanks for reacting to what I consider to be one of the best season finales I've seen!

I think part of the cult-like nature of their experience is that the innies have no knowledge base of the wider world. So it’s easy to encourage primitive, supernatural beliefs in them, like the divinity of the Egans, the bizarre stories of interdepartmental conflict, etc. They live this weird experience of being told the nature of reality by people who only need their loyalty, labor and compliance.

I don't know how long ago you filmed this but, tv show and movies need writers on set while filming as well. They are doing some filming in Europe but I doubt it will be released before the strike is over.

He's barely interacted with people in his life and his adrenaline is really high. He is trying to pick the right people to talk to to share secrets and make sure they trust him but he is doing it with basically no real world experience and very little experience socializing. But yes, it was very frustrating.

The last I read, season 2 is expected to air in late 2024. There were delays even before the writer's and actor's strikes so it's been pure torture for those of use who watched the weekly release episodes when it first aired. So. Much. Waiting. Lol

I think they were filming already but shortly into the WGA strike it shut down, and the SAG joining the writers will also delay it like even more. So a big TBD and ??? For s2 release date.

Welcome to the feelings the rest of us had at the ending of the finale; you spoiled reactors and your back to back watching of multiple seasons of a completed show 😜. I had rewatched this recently by showing it to my 19 year old daughter (her first time watching), and she was completely hooked as well. I’d temper your hopes on Season 2 coming out in early 2024; anything not fully “in the can” (completed and pretty much ready for release) is likely to suffer delays for several reasons. Even some movies that were to be released soon are being pushed back due to the inability to have the actors available to promote them.

Sense8 only has two seasons (like 12 episoder per season). And Lost is longer, but it's worth it. And I'm #TeamDylan too hahahaha waiting for the second season!!

what do u think about the theory that cobel, milchick, mr graner and who knows who else in "power" are actually severed, but theyre their inies 24/7, as in they took over whoever they were before? and adding to that, cobel having had issues with the people in power (u get a flash of some kind of respiratory tubbing she's hugging after tearing down the altar she has at home while having a breakdown about being fired) and having some kind of hidden agenda against them. (she also hugs mark and tells him to get away from them) and that them trying to tear down the company might fuck with her intentions for them, and that's why she reports it, as a way back in. just theories i read online after watching the show ♥ anyway, a whole lotta love girlies, from argentina.

Maybe Rickens friends are not pretentious :P Where do you put the Severance chip? In the back of the head. Remember the weird "my bird pecked a hole in the back of my head"-lady that Mark has to share a copy with during the reading? Weird comment yeah? How... many... severed "innies" (are you really an innie if you're... out?) are at that party? How many of them are Rickens "friends" and have been from the very first scene we see them? Maybe they're not pretentious, just ignorant and uneducated but have recieved some form of "training" for the outside world. And then of course get it wrong, because it's only surface level stuff they've been taught. Also, I don't know if you caught it, but the senators wife is severed. She uses her severed-self to go through labor and nothing else. This is why she doesn't remember Marks sister and why Marks sister gets the name for the baby "wrong". The innie and the outie named the baby separately. Such a great reaction to a fantastic show, enjoyed watching this with you! Lets hope Season 2 isn't that far away!
