I have to say that I think it's cold of you to label people who have difficulties moving on after a loved one's death "pussies". Perhaps Mark's wife was the love of his life and he's just unable to imagine a future without her? To some, the pain can be so unbearable that they end up taking their own lives, so is it really strange that grief - and grief alone - can make someone go through with a procedure like this, perhaps hoping that the "other half's" unawareness might reduce the stress level for the outie as well? Also, when it comes to guilt, it's not uncommon that people who grieve blame themselves for all manner of things - even when there's no reason whatsoever to feel guilty.

Very true. People behave differently to cope with their trauma. This could easily be a scenario of a person falling into a drug addiction, or a person in a depressive state where he/she can’t function. We would be more sympathetic to their actions in those cases. Severing should be no different.
