The implications of the senator's wife are so much darker than the rest of the show. Imagine being an innie and coming into existence only to give birth three times. Her entire existence is just child birth
@winter5866 Жыл бұрын
Right!!! This aspect really impacted me. The fact that her innie had a name picked out for the child, and then the outie of course named him something else. Her innie wouldn’t even know that the child she gave birth to doesn’t have to name she chose 😥
@starmorpheus Жыл бұрын
@@winter5866 And I think the reason the innie doesn't just "rebel" and threaten to kill herself like Helly did is because she knows she has kids that need a mother. Being held hostage just to give birth and watch your children grow up without "you" is beyond torture.

Helly being gone forever is an interesting idea, she is the character we were most connected to, because together we were both introduced to the servered floor at the same time, and she's the rebel who created doubt for everyone, which is relatable because we all as viewers felt the way she did. It makes sense that her inny won't be back in S2. But a narrative where a romantic interest develops over time between two main charaters and is then interrupted is going to be crying out for resolution. It's strange because a "victory" for "good" in this story is also the termination of the very people we have become fond of. In Helly's case, is Helena existing and Helly being gone forever a positive outcome? Outy Mark is a bit sad and lost, Inny Mark has developed some strength of character as he rebels against Lumen. It will be interesting to see where this all goes, but "freedom" for the innys isn't simple because it's not actually their freedom, it's only death.

My crackpot theory is that Cobel was severed a long time ago, but was so useful to Lumen that her Innie self was allowed to take over even outside. However, this left Cobel yearning to regain her lost Outtie memories, a goal she keeps hidden from her employer.

Which is why she has the shrine and pictures - she understands the whole process of Severance including having an outie and that her outie went to a Kier school, even if she can't directly remember it. Keeping the shrine is a proxy for her having those real outie memories.

Regarding the state where Mark and the other Lumonites reside and work, and taking some clues from places mentioned, etc., I have a thought... When I first saw Mark's glass laser cutout portrait, I figured the inscription meant he is Mark S. *from* Allentown (a city in Pennsylvania, a state that is not abbreviated PE). But, even if Allentown is just a file he was successful with, the Pennsylvania connection may still be there. Mark also mentions that he's technically from Gans. When I searched for "Ganz, Pennsylvania," (that's how I thought it would be spelled) I found results for "Gans," "an unincorporated community in Fayette County, PA (still not abbreviated 'PE')." Note, Mark's hometown in the show is probably called Ganz (with a Z), since the college where Mark and Gemma--and Reghabi, we learn--worked/work is called that--but I don't really think the spelling difference is important. Then, please recall, when Helly is asked early on if she can name *any* U.S. state or territory, she takes just a moment to recall, "I don't know--Delaware!" The state of Delaware closely neighbors the state of Pennsylvania. I think, maybe, PE is an abbreviation for a for-some-reason amalgamated state made up of Pennsylvania and Delaware. Is it Pennaware? Pennsylware? Pennelaware? If that's the case, then are the writers just, off-the-cuff, putting a couple of states together, or is it because of alternate history? I still think there may be some Nazi stuff in the Egans' past--so, in some kind of alternate timeline where things went differently in WWII, does the butterfly effect lead to the U.S. states being different (maybe in a lot of ways, other than their names?) *Or* is Lumon so powerful that it's financially, politically, or in some even more sinister way, taken over that area of the U.S., maybe even all of the U.S.? Maybe in Innie minds, PA and DE are still separate states, but in the Outie world, they're not? I know this is long and convoluted, and maybe no one will read it, but I wanted to jot it down, so there it is. Look upon all my commas and parentheses, and despair!

There is definitely some dystopian element of the outer world that the show has not revealed enough of yet, but is certainly there. Very few scenes have many people. The biggest gathering I can recall was the punk rock show, which was fairly small overall. The parking lot at lumen is often empty. Entire segments of the severed floor are unfilled. The town they live in is generally shown as not very busy at all. Combine that with the series about how all of the files the MDR department is working on are bodies of water, and there is a serious post apocalyptic element to the show that has yet to review itself.

another theory i've seen is that cobel is attempting to use lumon technology to bring some form of her mother (or maybe sister?) back, and she is using mark and gemma as test subjects. in the theory, gemma went into a coma/went brain dead after the accident, which lumon caused (in the lexington letter, car crashes are somehow connected to the work of mdr, a department cobel oversees) , and because of lumon's medical history, they had some sort of access to her when she was in the hospital and were able to stage her death and take her to the testing floor, where she underwent the severance procedure and was able to walk and talk again. because the part of her that would be considered her outie is dead, though, she came back much more socially stunted than the other innies. for this theory to work, the person on cobel's breathing tube would have to be in a similar state to gemma. that would explain why she's working so hard to see if gemma and mark can remember each other-- bringing a loved one back doesn't mean anything if they can't remember you. honestly though i have no idea lol this theory just interests me also: the theory about management being innies allowed to go to the outside is SO chilling omg. it reminds me of the tethered in jordan peele's us

I guessed that Helly was an Eagan when, before the finale episode began, they recapped scenes from previous episodes and emphasized the scene where animated Kier said "I love you" to Helly when she hit the quota. It made me wish I hadn't watched that spoilery recap. I am also leaning toward the theory that Cobel is in deep cover to take down Lumon in order to avenge her mother. I think that the contradictory things she does may be red herrings to throw us off. Also, my personal theory about Gemma/Ms. Casey is that she is a huge Lumon experiment to see if the microchip can awaken comatose/brain dead bodies. I believe that Gemma really did "die" in a car accident, but that she is brain dead. That is why her behavior is even more odd than the typical innie and why she lives on the testing floor when she's not conducting her wellness sessions. And that's probably how they were able to convince Mark that Gemma was dead. He likely had her removed from life support and then Lumon stole her body at some point. I think that goes along with Sean's theory about Jame Eagan's "Revolving" and the chips holding consciousness even after death. The heartbreaking part about that would be that even if Mark gets back in to save Gemma, she wouldn't really be Gemma because the Gemma he knew is dead. There would be no outtie version of her to save. The Milchick clones theory sounds nutty, but seriously, who did he have in the Security office operating the switches on either side of the door when he did the Overtime Contingency on Dylan? Cobel didn't know about it and I believe Graner was already gone looking for Reghabi.

I think the theory of Ms. Cobel plotting revenge for her mother against Lumon is the one that makes the most sense. Or you could fuse both of these theories, like, she's an innie who was granted a full life to live and she's investigating the company from inside to find out what happened to her mother. Either way I believe she will be an ally in the next season.

Enjoyed your reactions and insights - thanks guys! This show is a trip. I have a few theories too, but here's my main one (I'm going to leave some space, just in case I'm right!) - - - - - - - - - I think Rickon is an Eagon. He has dark red hair, like Helly, and there was that whole bit where he was worried about being like his father. I think is the black sheep of the family, who left it all behind (including the wealth, hence why he was a vagrant for a while), but he's not as free as he thinks. Now he's back in Kier, his whole friendship group are made up of severed people (who don't know they're severed obviously, but who are the infantile severed sides) who are there to be sycophantic and keep him there. I think Mark and Gemma came into Lumin's view purely because Mark's sister married Rickon, making them family too.
@jhornacek3 ай бұрын
If that was true then they would have recognized Ricken when Cobell and Milchek saw Ricken's book (with his face on the cover). They literally have no idea who this is besides "it's written by Mark's brother in law".

Yes, I am still watching this, it just took me longer to do it than I anticipated ^^ And when the first Expanse books came yesterday I was a little occupied with them ^^ But now I'm here, so let's watch this amazing season finale! 5:00 Man, Lewis taking the twist away every time ^^ Insane how you notice stuff and then think about it and come to the right conclusion! I guess that's exactly what good filmmakers and showrunners want to achieve but I never get that far. Maybe that's because I often binge shows and don't take the time to think about an episode in between... 7:38 Wow, I only now noticed that she is the woman from the child birthing house complex! 8:21 Holy shit, he does! Why does Dylan make it so hard not using the tie? ^^ 9:52 If I remember correctly, one of the lines that Ms Casey used for Irving in Wellness was that his Outie enjoyed the sound of Radar. I think this is what they were referring to. I just wonder where the hell they got that info from ^^ 11:21 Man, being brought into existence just to birth three kids... Very dark! 13:23 I never thought about Milchick taking photos either. I assumed it was just to make the working atmosphere feel more alive or sth? But this takes things to another level! 14:30 The first time I watched this I assumed that Irving had an estranged son or something like that. But now it makes more sense for him to think of and remember his father. 16:21 This was really quick thinking on Mark's side, putting all the pieces together and making Uncle Duty from it! Just bad luck that he had to say her name ^^ 18:32 Yeah, your theory of Irving having been managment is convincing me more and more. And I guess they probably used one of their bonus programs to remove his Innie's memories? 19:14 Oh god, he has! I didn't even think of that! And he didn't either. I guess this was not part of their discussed plan. They only discussed finding someone who you think you can trust who you can talk to. But they never talked about the possibility of someone waking up alone. 20:52 This is really interesting! Helly recites the "Forgive me" paragraph but not for herself but for her Outie. I see that as her kind of using the company's weapons against her Outie. Although it doesn't do anything, I know ^^ 25:20 Dylan's performance here is just extraordinary! The way he delivers every line! This is pure hatred and determination! SO good! 25:41 I was wondering the exact same thing the second you said that, Lewis! His glasses were so far, they almost fall off ^^ 26:38 This is so wholesome and cute! But poor Irving! 27:45 Yeah, what the hell is she talking about? She isn't even part of the company anymore! 28:31 Mark's "She's alive!" is so tense! The whole sequence is cut perfectly! And I can't believe they left us hanging with that cliffhanger! So unfair! 30:12 Yeah, Helly is not going back down again, that's for sure! 34:29 Super interesting conversation about who Lumon actually wants! I just want to throw Mark's history degree into the ring. Maybe they chose Mark because of that. Because if they are truly doing some shady "reviving a person from a century ago with AI" thing, maybe knowing how things were back then in detail isn't so bad? But that is just pure speculation! 34:49 HOLY SHIT! THIS MAKES SO MUCH SENSE! Ok, that turns everything on its head! But it's totally something Lumon would do! Man, this gets even more messed up after the season ends ^^ 35:59 The only thing she does seem to know how to do is being a nursing assistant/consultant. And now writing this, this brings up even more implications. Like, what if Ms Cobel was working on the testing floor nursing whatever they are doing/raising down there. And now she gets out and this is one of the only things she knows how to do? 37:58 Oh, it's the mother, not the daughter! 39:42 I feel like we're drifting into some Altered Carbon type of shenanigans. And while I think this sounds plausible for the show, I hope this isn't what's going to happen. But imagine if there has only ever been one Eagan. Kier could have had his consciousness in his chip and just implanted it into his son's head before he died. It was so fun seeing all the theories spill out of you Sean! One after the other! And yes, I do see the Milchick clone point, but Lewis is right, the book wouldn't have been laying there I guess... All the other theories seem very well based, but at most one of them can be true. So we're missing something or it is probably just something that we haven't thought about at all! I don't know if you want to also make a video discussing the Lexington Letter and the other bonus material but I'd be here for it! And I really hope that we get the new season in the beginning of 2024 or towards the end of 2023. Such a long time to wait tho... But you'll be filling this waiting time with (hopefully) Andor, so I can't complain! And until then, take care

all of it feels very kingdom hearts to me. everyone else thinks reintegration is the "right answer" but i feel like the actual right answer is to somehow let both people live as separate existences, as they are now their own people. As Mark says "we're people, not just parts of people." How they'd manage to pull that off though in this particular show I'm unsure, but it's hard to not think that would be the ultimate feeling that both halves should've gotten to exist. To me 'reintegration' could almost just be read as stealing your innie's sense of self and all their experiences.

(right after the baby was found) as relating to a woman they all strongly believe is DEAD --- is very low in my mind, and i doubt the writers will go that path (especially since it's so much easier to recreate tension by having the crowd misinterpret his meaning)

she's shown holding the baby and that Mark S clearly sees that she's holding the baby, him yelling passionately at the top of his lungs that 'she's alive!!!' after their last convo was about his dead wife, is pretty clear. Maybe everyone else in the room wont understand it, but Devon absolutely will.

This whole show reminds me a lot of Dollhouse. Like I think the end game of this procedure has little to do with work-life but something deeper and darker.

Agreed! Not to mentioned Ms. Casey/Gemma's actress was in Dollhouse.

Something super interesting to note is that Irving had been looking for Burt. His outie was looking for Burt. That explains why his innie had a connection to him all of a sudden. He probably knew Burt as an outie and had been searching for him. That's why Irving goes back to work every day, to hope his innie finds him on the inside. There's likely some kind of bleeding over effect that happens. Irving was hoping his innie would find and meet Burt on the inside. For some reason they can't do it on the outside.

This season finale has to 100% be inspired by Lost’s first season finale. Just an absolute insane cliffhanger.

This is driving me up the wall WTF their whole plan is to find a way to send a message to their outie right? And then Irving wakes up with a PAINT BRUSH IN HIS HAND? Write on the wall’s write a dang manifesto on whatever blank canvas there is my God I want to smack Irving so hard right now

He's gonna go back to his house and think that somebody broke into it. But maybe he did leave a message and we just haven't seen it yet. He's a smart, methodical person so it would make sense if he did.

Irvings outtie is already investigating Severance, and making significant progress: when he finds himself brought to Burts house by his innie, he'll have something better to work with than a message confirming what he already knows.

Irving is only interested in one thing - finding Burt.
@AudoPlayАй бұрын
Their plan was not to send a message to their outie as they don't know if their Outie is good people or not (helly's sure isn't) so the goal was actually to find someone they think they could trust to tell everything to, to BYPASS the outie potentially just pulling a Helly and not giving a shit. So, Irvings goal was still to find someone, unfortunately he woke up as a solitary existence and thus had to try and find the closest thing, which in this case was Burt. Besides, we don't know if Irving didn't leave a message for his other self. He might've, but that still wasnt the GOAL for them. The goal was to make sure that OTHER people know.
@jhornacekАй бұрын
@@AudoPlay Their goal was to find someone that their outie trusted, which is why Mark talks to his sister. He asks her if they're close and if he can trust her. Irving has no idea if he can trust Bert's outie, who is a literal stranger to his outie. He just wants to find Bert. And I'm pretty sure Bert didn't leave any sort of message for his outie. We see him at his home, searching, finding the map, knowing where Bert lives, and immediately leaving. Finding Bert is his only goal here, not leaving himself a message, or finding someone his outie trusts to tell them the truth.
