Severn Railway Bridge Disaster 60th anniversary + interview - BBC Points West - 22nd October 2020

On the 25th of October 1960 two barges, transporting oil and petrol along the river severn lost control in thick fog and collided with the Severn Railway Bridge near Sharpness. Five men died in the tragedy and just three men were rescued. The river was an essential route for fuel deliveries from Avonmouth and 60 years on, our Gloucestershire reporter, Steve Knibbs, has been speaking to two people who vividly remember the crash...

The accident affected a lot of people that lived and worked on the River Severn. My late father was a water bailiff at the time and knew George Thompson, Jack Dudfield and possibly more of the poor men that were killed that night. May they rest in peace.
