Same sentiments with everyone else in this thread. What initially charmed me was the open-world aspect of Genshin... but then after logging in less, backlog just kept piling up -- when I re-visited the game I was just frantically speedrunning world quests and unlocking Inazuma/Sumeru because ongoing events required you to finish major storylines first. I was trying so hard to scrounge up primogems for banners (F2P). Other open world experiences were fun because you can explore at your own pace. With Genshin, it just felt like being leashed with a timer and getting punished for not being active.

Yes me too specially with all the filler stuff they that doesnt really add anything to the story and just drags stuff longer than it should like the final mission after scaras fight its basically an hour long quest of everyone being happy they didnt die and just pops in for a sec and says good job, like this could have been either black screen into nahida thanking scene or instead of having you go around and fetch everyone that half of them do not care to go to this POS party, they could show up and done 30 min quest right there ez pz. Like the chasm I literally skipped half of it and still got the main idea of OLD FIREND GOOD - NOW MAD - NOW DEAD - WE OUT - WE SAFE same goes for the new ice desert area its just a bs story with recycled mechanics that dont add anything tot he game or experience they could have used that already existing "clear the sludge" system but they just choose to make it another hand holdi tutorial that adds 3 primos and useless backpack filler. Theres is also the endless grind for artifacts that at a certain point you just stopped because improving on quasi perfect artifacts its a nightmare I would rather touch grass

Imo the story really needs some drama. And no I don't care about new NPCs with random sad backstories, I want things to actually happen. At least the Sumeru final and Inazuma final was kinda interesting and felt like something would happen at least with Snezhnaya and the Fatui, but apparently everything is back to the usual business. I like the lore and Genshin as a setting, but the story feels very weak and not engaging. They should really use both Travelers more. Honkai Star Rail suffers from the same issue tbh, you just feel like someone watching all that stuff unfold like it's some sort of entertaining movie while not doing anything at all. The silent protagonists are boring. Honkai Impact 3rd had an AMAZING emotional story that made many players cry, especially with its banger score and all these wonderful animation videos. Pls give me that for Genshin, otherwise I'll just continue to skip because I couldn't care less about the tragic family drama of Nilou's 7th theatre band member, the blind desert girl who got semi-yuri comments on Lumine but her quests are just exploring 12347812478 desert ruins or that damn grandpa in Sumeru who has 30 LINES TALKING ABOUT HIS DAMN TOMATOES. What also confuses me is that they seem to take the Traveler's personality away on purpose. They have thousands of voice lines about small landmarks, like the Inazuma bath house or Ayaka's house, yet they never talk about it ingame. Why is this so hidden what the hell? They're just permanently quiet and faceless. I also wish that we could bond more with the characters. Like some sort of typical festival date with Ayaka during an event, but nah. Honkai had a lot of that stuff and you grew super attached to the characters, it's pretty absurd how the community turns these characters into something we love with more drama, engagement and involvement.

Thank you so much for bringing this topic to the table!! I've been playing almost daily since 1.0, but I'm not a hardcore player. I always have content to play and I do it at my own pace. But I've been struggling with this burnout for months, realising I'm playing it as a daily chore, and just some weeks ago I came to a conclusion: I still love the game, the worldbuilding, the combat system, building characters, the story and all the lore that we are barely grasping, I got caught by its universe and start playing HI3 and HSR, I'm really excited about Fontaine... But it shouldn't be hard to enjoy it: farming, grinding and building are extremely imbalanced and exhausting (resin system and consumption is crap), exploring is really enjoyable but impossible to complete, the only permanent content is hard to complete for most players, conversarions that take ages to get to the point... I know these are minor issues but I would prefer Hoyoverse dedicates some version updates to fill this little mechanical gaps that improve the overall experience rather than fill them with events... I'm sorry if this is too long, but it is sad to see people abandoning a game they trully love. And I really hope I'll be able to play it until the end.

For eg, if i want a Vaporize team, who do i need, and if i want a freeze team, who do i need to pull? There's no random pulling. Everything is well calculated n adds strategic value to the overall roster. That's why i have many of the meta team or hero despite being near f2p (only bought two Welkin) which is what i want in the game. And also this means having the discipline not to pull the trigger when it doesn't have the hero i need/want. So for me, I'm grateful for the lessons Genshin taught me. Overwhelming story and exploration is definitely a big part for me, but for me I definitely also have burnout from the gacha itself. A lot of the fun for me in a gacha is the cycle of anticipation, saving, and spending, but I ended up liking Sumeru's 4-stars more than the 5-star cast. The only Sumeru 5-star I was looking forward to pulling was Dehya, and I ended up skipping her because I didn't want to encourage the "dump her on the standard banner with bad stats and hope people pull out of fear that she'll never have a featured banner again" approach they took. I got was Nahida for pure meta reasons, pulled some constellations and signature weapons on characters I already had, and otherwise I've spent almost all of Sumeru in "saving" mode, without any of the fun of anticipating and summoning new characters. In a sense I'm lucky that I'm coming into Fontaine with 100k primos as a semi-regular Welkin player, but if Fontaine's cast doesn't click with me either there's a good chance I'll be done.

I think I fit pretty well into the “overwhelmed by content” category of Genshin burnout... but I’m also a pretty even mix between the two main types of burnout that you identify. I used to feel very “completionist” about the game, wanting to max explore, find all the books and enigmatic pages, finish all the quests-being new to gaming and enthralled by the open world, I wanted to experience Genshin Impact to the absolute fullest. At some point I was totally caught up with every quest and almost every exploration area… and I immediately became incredibly bored. Artifact farming didn’t pay off enough to be interesting, and getting into meta and new characters wasn’t really possible as a f2p player. I decided to let quests build up over the next couple of patches, and this plan to “restock” quickly went downhill-instead of feeling encouraged by the incoming flow of content, I felt too tired of the simmering urge to catch up on everything I’d fallen behind in to enjoy it if I tried. I don’t really remember how I got out of this slump. I know the Perilous Trail event and the Sumeru Archon quests were patches that I really fell in love with, but since news of Fontaine started taking over Genshin’s social media spheres I’ve been slowly trying to learn how to pace myself-both with knowing how best to catch up with things and at the same time learning how to tell when I’m starting to get tired of living in a screen. I definitely learned some things from my burst of interaction at the beginning of the 3.x patches that I’m trying to prepare for and pace better when 4.0 drops, and I feel much better prepared for new content than I have in the past!

I started Day 1, and haven't missed a single day of playing. I think the closest I got to burning out was Eula's first banner, when I spent most my primogems at the time on her. Seeing my saved primogems go down to basically nothing made me not want to build it back up again. Of course, this happens in any game for me. Even a single player game, if I hoard something and then spend it... it makes it tough to want to keep playing for some reason for me, lol. In the end, instead of stopping, I decided to take things at a more casual pace. I decided to log in only once a day to do the dailies and use my resin, and not worry about any overflow. Now, despite not having missed a single day yet, the game has become a very relaxing part of my day. The moment I boot the game up, and I hear the intro music, I start destressing and relaxing. I've never found daily quests to be a chore or anything, either. It's different for everyone, of course. For me, it's a short relaxing portion of my day to get away from my hectic life for a time.

i have an experience with playing a game for 8 years on and off. there was just this emotional tie i had to it that's hard to put into words. it kept me going back whenever I got tired of other games. It was partially the good memories I made inside the game with friends, but also the game itself. If you play a game like that, a game becomes a 'place' instead of just a source of entertainment. It's like that feel-good movie that you rewatch everytime you crave that magic sauce. Sometimes though, when going back to something with those kind of expectations, you realize you left your nostalgia glasses off and is shocked that the seratonin isn't kicking in. That's what happened to me with that mmo i used to play. It lost the magic sauce. Genshin still has it though, so I'm still a happy camper, but I'm not delusional. that sauce has an expiration date. i just don't know when mines will expire, but apparently for a lot of people, theirs expire a faster because of various reasons. This doesn't make any of the issues players might have with the game invalid of course. I think the game had big issues since the very beginning that have not been fixed even going on 3 years now. It's just we were so "in love" with the game that we were willing to put up with those issues and once the love runs thin, so does our patience or willingness to overlook them. As corny as it sounds, it's kind of like a relationship with a person. Every person has issues and some have more serious issues than others of course, but when you're in love with something/someone, you put up with a lot of stuff. Eventually the rose-colored glasses come off and we're just not willing to ignore them anymore. Of course, there's a portion of the playerbase that claims they have 0 expectations so they can't be disappointed, but I personally don't subscribe to that, because how can you have 0 expectations for something/someone you like? If anything, you subconsciously still hope it improves or fixes those issues, but of course that rarely ever happens no matter if it's a person or a company. The only option really is to leave it/them and maybe come back later if ever.

I distinctively remember the moment I decided the burnout was unbearable and I had enough of it. After playing every single day since lauch (actually since CBT1 in 2019), spending 1.5k € on the game and exploring 100% of every area, it all ended in one event that gave a weapon after completing all the related quests and activities. I was busy irl at the time and had to rush on the last day to complete it. I started the quest and saw nothing but endless, MEANINGLESS chatter for hours upon hours. Paimon running her tongue on and on to say NOTHING at all. I spammed my mouse and spacebar as fast as I could but it was doing nothing against the brickwalls of text. My frustration was building up, so I googled how long it would take to complete that quest and realized I was not going to be able to finish it. That was the last straw. The frustration turned into anger, and I slammed my desk, closed the game and never logged back in. This happened months ago. I'm sick and tired of being FORCED to do something I hate doing, just because they put an exclusive reward behind it, and then time gate it. I'm done with their zero effort to make optimizations to the game or add QoL features, or simply to listen to players. No artifact loadouts after 3 years is a joke and speaks volumes about how much they care about the combat-focused player base, who by the way are usually the most passionate bunch of them all. I myself was too passionate about the game. I felt like I cared more about it than the devs themselves. It was probably my fault. I had a very unhealthy relationship with the game and it was never going to end well.

I feel like over time once you reach a certain point in your account the repetitive nature of the game is clear and the game can become a bit like a chore :( What’s helped me a lot when it came to burnout was to try doing a bit of random co-op, or to take a week or two off here and there, which I used to be afraid of as I would not want to lose out on primos but now that I have many characters I like and that my account is strong enough, I’m okay with taking breaks here and there

What your really saying is that you have realized just how dead and lifeless all the NPC’s are everyday, along with the rest of us, but you take a break to forget how bad it is and come back to realize, it’s the same lifeless zombie interactions over and over and over all year long. Ugh.

My burnout was that there is too much to do in genshin and not enough time to spend elsewhere outside of genshin. I don't like missing events and those exclusive weapon rewards but when you are busy elsewhere and too tired to finish event after coming back, it then became a chore instead of enjoyment.

New player perspective (rambling): It seems to me that 'burnout' is an incredibly difficult issue to address because it's experienced through the lens of players' expectations and past experiences. I came from a raiding MMORPG background having quit WoW after 15 years and taking a 1.5 year break before starting Genshin as my new game. There are many wonderful things about Genshin but I've found over the years that the biggest protective factor against burnout in gaming (for me, personally) is having happy social relationships within gameplay itself. So many kind and funny people have helped me learn about the game in co-op domain farms who I've met through the Genshin discord. But there's no aspect of the game that brings us back together once you progress past the point of needing assistance/carries. There are examples of Genshin content creators who have been incredibly inventive in finding ways to keep the game interesting but at the end of the day, finding ways to enjoy meaningful combat (combat being the aspect of the game that I enjoy most) with friends is a huge barrier to longevity. Without these kinds of activities, the only way to pursue novelty is to secure new characters/weapons and players can then end up feeling 'trapped' in the loop of menial activities that reward primogems and are also incentivised to spend money to do so. Maybe some people are better at accepting this aspect of how the game currently is than others. Genshin is my first 'gacha' game, so I don't have much sense of what is realistic to ask developers to change moving forward but it's obvious that many aspects of 'burnout' are linked to the very nature of 'gacha' itself.
@fejipe Жыл бұрын
It's pretty simple, in order to avoid burnout the developers only had to implement a new end content for coop. Like coop abyss or something like that, it would incentivate having a team in genshin, making friends and to keep contact. It's very different to experience abyss alone and with friends. If it is too difficult you are still having fun playing with friends and looking for a better way to face it, when you are alone and it is too hard it only burn you down.

@@fejipe so content for coop andys. In some truth that would make slightly more mmo than previously of barely an mmo. I prefer if genshin can just win off content, and not rely on dailies to keep interaction. For me,the nail is one word: Jeht. I really love her and her story quest, and not to mention the Oasis she brought us into. I feel pain because I somehow feel that she wont be brought up anymore after this, and perhaps even forgotten. I dont have any hope that Genshin Team will not even care. I also have to agree, the storytelling is one way or another...really BAD! And the story point from Story Quest would likely never brought up again, which is also sad because most of them are really good. At first I thought it all because I play it for too long (2,5 year), but if I see another Gacha I played which is FGO (3 years now), I dont think play duration really a valid point of why I getting burned out.

I had to do all of them in one go since I stopped playing during the 1st desert update, but dear god she has like 20123489 "explore this new desert ruin that looks like all the other desert ruins but it has a new riddle that a toddler could solve" quests. They never stop. I thought I was finally done after 4 days but then "Desert Ruin Exploration (PART ONE)" pops up and I just offed myself lmao. She and her dad are wonderful characters outside of the ruin exploration stuff. But it's weird that this side character got so much personality and that actual things happen. I wish there was at least some drama with some characters. I love Ayaka, but she's not believable when she immediately befriends the Traveler with poor Thoma and Yoimiya sitting next to her as she says "Woah you're so cool I never had a friend before!" it's really weird and feels off with a perma silent protagonist. Genshin could be so amazing with more engagement and drama, Star Rail has the same problem imo. HI3 was peak mihoyo storytelling and engagement. The key is definitely pacing yourself. I think the positives, or negatives, of there being so much to explore is that if you can't do it all do what you can and then during downtimes or slower content being generated you can explore what you didn't do. I've done all of the world and story quests so now I am exploring the rest of Inazuma and not only getting primos from chests, but getting those cool name cards. Now this is only if you haven't 100% everything in the game, if you have then burn out might be different but yeah the best advice is just to pace yourself and go at your own pace.

Exploration is also one of my favorite, but for all the desert lands I only just started exploring that the last week or two because there was SO MUCH. I felt stressed just thinking about starting for months. But now with a new region on the way, I feel I HAVE to catch up or I'll be so behind I won't be able to do anything. Genshin is a game to love and hate at the same time. It tries so hard to be accessible to casual players, but a lot of the time it's just not. Especially for leveling up characters and grinding and saving up to get characters you actually want. The long, long, LONG quests that take like forty hours such as Sumeru burns me out so much too, because half the time it felt like they dragged out so much they didn't even need to.

It’s definitely tough. I remember when genshin first started people were like, “Take your time or else you might get burnt out” but the games been out for almost 3 years at this point. You can only do coms and domains so many times before it starts getting tedious. I think it’s good to look forward to things that’ll come later on in the future like new characters new nations and new story quests. For me, I love the story of Genshin and I’ve told myself I want to see the ending of the Teyvat chapter before possibly quitting so that’s what keeps me going

I don’t really experience burnout tbh. I used to feel like the game’s a chore but that feeling faded away. The idea of seeing new characters, areas or even the return of some characters we know as a dead person excites me. I never skipped a day since I started playing, there were times I didn’t feel like playing but even then I at least did my dailies to make sure I don’t regret missing out on a character I want because I didn’t have enough primogems. I also stopped skipping voiced quests. It made me more interested in characters and their personalities and how the main story progresses. Though, I still want them to add a completely skip dialogue option for at least non-voiced quests. As a person who has a job related to reading lots of texts, I don’t feel like reading those quests after a workday full of reading other texts.

For me, I think as much as I enjoy the story/lore of the game, the gacha ~effect~ is taking a toll on me more than anything else. At some point, you just get disinterested in the lore in order to keep up with the game such as abyss, artifact rolling, meta characters, and gacha most of all. It does feel like a chore now especially if you just burn out your resins getting bad artifact rolls, “speedrunning” events to follow up with your favorite character’s banner, and more. I’m not saying this is the case for everyone, but this is what I noticed with my friends who used to enjoy Genshin as well. The reward system is not that satisfying and if you’re a veteran, you really just don’t have that much interest in nitpicking every corner of Teyvat for a couple of primogems. It just kinda seems like your time spent in the game is rewarded with a couple of pulls and 1 in 1000 good artifacts to compete in your current level. And that’s just one side of my reasons on being burnt out…

The most contributing factor as to why there is the genshin burnout (at least for me), is the fact that the dialogue is so unnecessarily long for each quest and you can’t skip it. On top of that, the gap between each dialogue section is narrow as I find that there’s very little things to do in between. For example, i was doing sumeru archon quests where not only the dialogue was overstretched, but then in between dialogue i was asked to move from location a to b (a very short distance) just to be back in the dialogue AGAIN. why can’t the game just do it for me? its pointless so I just gave up on it. I spent hours mostly on the dialogue

As someone who's played everyday since release, I feel like being f2p helps me avoid burnout since I have an incentive to login and get primos via dailies, events, exploration, etc. Whenever theres no new events or stuff to do, I just login, do my dailies, then log off and do something else or play other games. Players who try to force themselves to play hours everyday are just asking to be burnt out extremely quickly, and therefore I think it's also important to play games other than genshin. dang, it's the opposite for me, in that i find myself getting fed up easier with HI3 over GI, but it's also due to the endgame content for me basically, to me, HI3 has a tad bit too much weekly gamemodes since they're all combat, at times i just feel like im just there to mash buttons all the time chip space feels stale as hell after its first 2 seasons, fortunately the recent 2 or 3 seasons seemingly have weaker enemies or stronger buffs, so it didn't take effort to get all the rewards it helps when new chara drops, as i get to play around with new playstyles in ER (at least if im lucky enough to get them), but outside of that.. yeah this is also why im much more excited with event minigames when it comes to HI3 (fall guys, candy crush, etc.), and keeps on asking for reruns in the survey genshin burnouts tend to happen to me because once you reach the so-called "endgame", the game ends up not taking much time daily during its downtime, and so when new contents drop, i end up feeling way too strained with the excess of new content although i've come to find my tune for that in recent months, by consciously pacing the amount of time i spend daily, regardless of whether i actually have a lot more free time on that day or not i found myself actually enjoying the game much more, and was even able to be immersed with all the recent world quests, even if they were hella long, cause i spent literal days or weeks going through them slowly but steadily and there's also the TCG when i just wanna mess around non-combat-wise

I wanna say they should add a feature to choose the category of commissions or just let us remove them from daily commissions cuz I only want the combat type bc it's the only one least time consuming. Very unlike HSR that gives us easier coms such as taking a photo and more. Genshin turned into a chore bcuz of how TIME CONSUMING everything is. As a casual player, even events duration feels fast to me to the point whenever I delay them then try to speedrun the day before it ends, I just can't speedrun them enough cuz of how we don't have a skip button so instead I'm taking most of my time spam tapping the screen.

This is a very nice format Sevy! its very chill, perfect to have in the background while playing lol looking forward for the next episode! On the topic of burnout, the thing is that it is 100% a subjective thing and in a way it is inevitable forn any game, not just Genshin, but how fast it happens or why its pretty much up to the individual, for instance, i've been playing Genshin for more than a year now daily and havent felt burnout even once at all, i have other games with 3k+ hours in it and still havent felt burned out, yet i played Destiny 2 for like a month and i did felt pretty burned out on that one Theres also this very negative connotation that comes with burnout that people often confuse with like, not liking the game or the game being bad or whatever, and people very often ,even tho they start feeling burned out, keep playing because the feel like they NEED to, which only makes the burnout happen faster lol but in reality theres absolutely nothing wrong with feeling burned out, sometimes all you need is to take a rest from the game and come back later

For a Genshin content creator myself, I actually experienced burn out before. There was a time where I was a player who didn't care about the meta, just building random stuff on characters. I was pretty much not playing the game properly and only playing it for the story, and once the story ran out, I got bored. So bored to the point that I only open it sometimes and didn't care if I missed out dailies and resin capping because I was simply waiting for the new story to drop. However, when I had Raiden Shogun in her first banner, I was only using her on my OG team with zhongli, geo mc, and yanfei. Then, my Raiden just felt so underwhelming, I felt like I wanted to give justice to her and play her properly. So I tried watching guides about building characters and how to make optimal teams and rotations. I've always tried to avoid theorycrafting videos because I didn't understand anything and I always felt so bad whenever I see a damage per screenshot video and thinking how my characters don't do that much damage even if it's clearly not optimal and relies heavily in a very complicated set up with bad crit ratio with a lot of money involved too. So that's when I learned Raiden national or Rational in short. I started building Xingqui, and Xiangling. SOMEHOW, Hoyo knew that I was building Rational and out of nowhere gave me my first ever Bennett and I completed the team. Even at low investment, this team just completely DESTROYS everything, that's when I had my first dopamine intake I got from actual functioning built characters in a functional team. It felt AMAZING, it feels like I'm actually playing the game properly now, and that's when I started playing Spiral Abyss, I didn't get 36 stars right away because I only had Rational as my only good team but knowing how well my Rational is doing in abyss got me so motivated that I became a GADDAMN SPIRAL ABYSS CONTENT CREATOR. Ever since that day, I never EVER skipped a day playing Genshin. I was constantly farming for my characters for them to get to max level and high talents with the best artifacts as possible. I always farm for primogems to get the best characters for the team I'm building and even vertically investing and getting cons and weapons (I'm a F2P). My first ever 36 stars was around 2.6 and I've always had 36 stars afterwards. Now, I have multiple top characters in the akasha and upload full clear 36 stars runs and chamber speed runs as well (Yes, I'm still F2P to this day). I have never experienced burn out ever since then 👍

After pondering Genshin is really a great game. When I had time and excitement I was able to devote maximum energy and attention to the game even with things going on in my life. However as I played more and more and got more familiar and comfortable with things I slowly started to be able to play less and only stick to the things that I enjoy, . I’ve had maybe 2 burnout phases both of which were right before a new region (before Sumeru and before Fontaine). And I think the convenience of Genshin is that it really is a casual game, I know that it will always be there. Maybe not the same as my peak for Genshin excitement but I’ll always like Genshin I’m just prioritizing my time differently (which I think is a lot healthier).

It comes down to the fact that Genshin is so versatile and offers so much that no matter what they do now and which aspect they improve (more exploration, less exploration, more stories, less stories, harder combat, less combat), there will be a subgroup of the fanbase who will hate it and it will make the game worse for them. Also the whole concept of gachas is being an ongoing story. Some of us have had an ONGOING AAA title for three years. There is no way the game will feel the same. The way we appreciate new things changes with how many times we have experienced it. The joy from a 5* character in 1.1 was different than in 2.1 and different now. Because I cannot go back to having 0-1 5* characters. I cannot go back to the point where I still craved new 5* over constellations or weapon for my favs. But it's the same pattern in every gacha as your collection grows and no one is making a big deal of it. People criticize Genshin because they have MUCH higher expectations. It was simply too good at one point and letting that kind of "good" go for good as a natural process and proceed to the next stage is something many people can't process in a healthy way.

I just returned to Genshin after a break because I want to pull for the Fatui and want to get back to exploration. And I agree, the Sumeru desert feels so big it definitely contributed to my burnout. This video helped me realize that the event puzzles contribute to my sense of burnout as well like with the new adventurer's trials event.

I am close to burning out due to ommissions being hard to reach, especially the ones you need to climb, and especially Sumeru. it's a desert for its half part but there are so many cliffs that wouldn't let you reach their tops.

Between year 1 and 2, I almost had a burnout, but took a step back and talked myself into not being so stressed of missing out on some primogems. FOMO is so real for gacha games. After that, I still played every day most of the time but took a week off here and there and it helped. I'm still playing pretty much every day but don't worry if I miss some events because I have all the characters and weapons I could ever need.

This is a good topic to discuss and you did a great job explaining all the possible reasons for a player to experience burn out. Personally, my reason for being in “burning out" state is pilled up. A bit of context I installed GI in a time where the 3.0 patch is literally about to start. I was very intrigued by the videos, advertisements and such I saw online. I would say I am also a 'completionist' type of player, I mean as long as I could get some freemogems and achievement I'm willing to do that task/ content. Before I am not bothered by listening to the whole dialogue and cut scenes because the story and lore is captivating. Also, before 100% exploration did not bother but all of these change when I encounter the sacred sakura and sumeru. I genuinely enjoy exploring, the puzzles for me are a bit complicated yet manageable, however, the amount of effort needed to complete whole exploration is really not rewarding. Exploring Sumeru is another level of difficulty since before you could explore entirely the region you need to finish the long main story quests that has too much dialogue making you forget the mechanism of the new gadgets and puzzles. I swear the dialogues in Sumeru are literally too much when compared to other regions making me lose interest in the lore/story and want to skip every dialogue of the region. Even though I played the game when the newest region came out I feel like I'm in the state of ‘burning out' maybe because the things that capture my interest (lore/story and exploration) does not give the same enjoy compared when I first started playing. Before I really liked the fact that I could wander in the map innocently, but now with the amount of contents and the structures of the map I now (heavily) rely on guide videos to make sure I covered everything but i also takes the fun part of exploring. In addition, FOMO also is a bit of a reason. Since I am a 'completionist' I want to participate and finish the main events in each patch as it will give the highest amout of primogems. But FOMO also comes when those limited events contain a certain character's or place's story/lore. The best example is Albedo after finishing his story quest I was left hanging and not interested in him as a character not because he is geo but because his story as character is given for a limited time. Right now based on my experience, I like more doing a patch where the major quests (mainly archon quests) are finished and just waiting for me to do rather than doing it while it is ongoing as I easily forget the happenings. Lastly, I am trying to slow down my phase so it will not register to my mind that playing is a requirement or I am obligated to play since it will burnout me more.

it's sad to hear this as a new-ish player. I started after Sumeru archon quest ended and can't be more excited for Fontaine to release and finally be able to experience the story at the same pace as older players

Don't worry, most players have burnout problems with the game because they want to play the game every day all the time, if you take breaks after a couple of patches into a new region and come back and don't take the grinding part super seriously, you should be fine. Now, if you expect Genshin to be a fun experience to play every single day for years in a row, then this mindset might not be the best for how the game is structured. Dw tho, first few patches within a new region's release are hype af and usually re-ignite the passion in the whole community so you'll be fine for a while too!
@bellatravis9716 Жыл бұрын
I am a bit late, but for me personally it’s the lack of hard content. I really really enjoy the combat aspect of the game, but sadly there aren’t enough actually fun challenges in the game for me to fully enjoy it. For example I really wish we would just have fun challenging modes that are permanent like pvp, 4pv4p, and boss raids,(like maybe a way tanky version of the bosses we already have). I also understand that a lot of that could be considered whale content but tbh they could probably add a filter during matching in order to fix that. My point is if they actually put an effort into having more challenging permanent content a lot people would play more and actually just have fun in the game even if the rewards are minimal!

As someone who played genshin for almost 3 years now without a single day missed, I still don't understand what burnout means. Maybe it's coz I more or less enjoy everything from lore to 36 staring abyss to 100%ing exploration and achievements.
@barbaradesigns1774 Жыл бұрын
me too. The game is relaxing for me, but I still can clear abyss with 36*, every area is at 100% and doing dailies with my friends every day. Maybe is because I use the game as a way to take my head out of work, but playing just half hour a day and 2 to 3h on the weekends is enough to get everything finished pretty fast too.
@dogedingo1535 Жыл бұрын
One thing I started doing since 3.0 is by exploring the map only with the interactive map in order not to miss anything in order to only have to do it once. The times where I would run around and check every corner are gone for me. Having to play certain quests in order to unlock Bosses or even Events are not good imo.
@viedralavinova8266 Жыл бұрын
I'm a day 0 player. And I always experience burnout around Christmas and Easter. The biggest thing for me is how events feel too similar aside from the flagship for the update. Sometimes just taking the time to enjoy myself and take in the game really breathes life and love into me for this game I hold so dear. Not worrying about progressing or tasks, just having FUN. Like, I haven't explored Tsurumi Island for a while, let's walk around there for a bit. No rush, just to enjoy the game for what it is. It really heals the soul. If you enjoy abyss and combat, then just play around with goofy comps. If you like the music, teleport to locations and just enjoy yourself. HOWEVER, from my research of playing games for over 20 years I know exactly why people get burnt out. People take the fun out of the game, either consciously or subconsciously. If you aren't enjoying yourself, then you are just burning yourself out. And there are plenty of ways to do this, but the biggest culprit in today's age is calculating the fun out of the game. Which is to say, trying to find the most efficient or meta way to do something. This is the WHOLE REASON we have such a stringent stamina (resin) system. It's also the reason why artifact farming is so RNG. RNG artifacts slows players down, and it balances the game. You can have tasks, but remember to have fun with it. This is also the whole reason why the devs slow down on content during the spring as they work on the next region. They want everyone to slow down, and everyone catch up. It's a great equalizer, so everyone is recharged for the next nation. Also allows the devs to focus their resources on the next nation in the summer. But again people take the fun out of their games, so the devs have to guide players in a direction during this time. They know people get burnt out during this time, and they know hooking peple back in will always be a task.
@Shindy117 Жыл бұрын
Regarding the artifacts part that's the wrong way to design it though. It's true that RNG slows down the game but only works in the short term. If your still grinding for artifacts for months upon months (excluding being overly picky about rolls just decent artifacts) and you still don't get what you want then you'll get frustrated. The game is making you waste your time, by actually wasting your time. You HAVE to give players the carrot on the stick, cause eventually they will see through what your doing and stop trying. We in game development call that a "quit moment". I disagree with the balance comment, I see what your getting at but they are going about it wrong...

I used to 100% the exploration from Mondstat to Inazuma and even the green areas of Sumeru but the Sumeru desert just never interested me enough and with every new area that opens it just overwhelms me with the feeling I have so much to explore that I don't even want to bother anymore. I'm on break from the game right now and I still love it and wish to come back, but the idea of having to use resin and exploring everything just gives me anxiety haha. Hopefully, Fontaine can bring back us old players to the game! Thanks for this discussion, Sevy! ❤

Genshin is a wonderful game, but it's a very bad feeling to think that we are being psychologically manipulated by FOMO, daily rewards and the constant pressure of know that all of it can be paid for. It is purposeful on Hoyo's part and often overshadows a pretty special experience

When it comes to world quests and exploration, the Aranara quest line is exactly when my tolerance and patience for these things got completely spent. I did not bother reading 99% of the quest, I just wanted to explore, but I couldn't because of the quest. Maybe I missed some very important lore to Sumeru but I honestly didn't care anymore. I'm still not done with exploring with about half of the forest because all the energy I had to do it got spent on doing that quest line. I can't even be bothered to start doing the desert, it was already a massive area but they just kept on expanding it.
@ly1182 Жыл бұрын
I feel this so much. When I first started playing the Aranara quest line, I thought it would be about 1hr long and manageable. Then I came across a comment saying it’s actually 7+ hours, making me postpone on finishing it until a month ago when I felt FOMO since Fontaine would be coming out soon. The quest did not have to be that extremely long. Honestly, most of it was doing little errands for Aranaras and that part could have been shortened. I think Hoyo tried to address the players’ complaint about the lack of content, but a 7+ hour long world quest was not a way to address the issue. Sumeru’s desert area is almost as big as Mondstadt and Liyue combined (and this is without factoring in the underground areas), and it’s a stark contrast to Inazuma that has smaller and manageable land sizes. Despite its gigantic size, the desert areas are uninteresting and look the same unlike Inazuma where each new region had its own unique identity. They kept on adding these desert areas 3 times in a row, killing all the fun of exploration because it’s exploring the same sandy desert (with some oasis mixed in) 3 times in a row. Why not add some unique jungle areas? Hopefully they make the world quests and exploration more manageable in Fontaine. Idk how I can continue if Fontaine is as or more overwhelming than Sumeru! And I haven’t still finished the last two desert quests…😂

For me it's the dailies (that I feel are required to acquire enough pulls) which ultimately feel like chores, and the limited time events that make me feel I need to rush along out of fear of missing content. Without those two, I think I'd be able to enjoy the content at my own pace and feel less burned out.
@honoraryazian Жыл бұрын
I was feeling burnout a while ago and after taking a break I realised what I needed to change about how I play. I don't enjoy doing the same daily tasks over and over again. And I had been telling myself that I was "falling behind" by not doing all my commissions, or using all my resin on time, or making sure I do enough for BP leveling etc. So after I took a break I decided not doing dailies every day or not hitting the max BP level wasn't actually necessary for me to enjoy the game. I don't need to grind and get a shit ton of resources, and I have built enough characters by now so I don't need to put a tone of effort into all of that either. So instead, I'll only log in and play when there's something I really enjoy: fun events/minigames, character/story quests, interesting areas to explore etc. And if in the future I see a character I do want to pull for, I'll do the available events just enough to get freemogems so that I can make pulls when I want. And after I get a character, I'll relax and take my time with building the character. Case in point - My Kaveh is still lvl 20 and I just don't feel like going hunting for his materials in the desert lolol I think in general players should figure out what is really enjoyable to them, and then focus on just those aspects of the game and ignore the things which aren't of interest to them.

Yep! You're absolutely right. I've tried to come back to Genshin like 3 or 4 times, and I just can't. I feel so incredibly overwhelmed with these 1000000 missions, events, 15000 things to explore, unskippable dialogue, FARMING WHICH IS DISGUSTING, trying to keep your units up to date to go thru with the abyss. It's just too much. I feel like leaving Sumeru abandoned and trying to start again in Fontaine.

I looked at my growing backlog of other games/hobbies and took a break for a few months. I’ve been wanting to get back into Genshin because I love exploring and treasure hunting, but I haven’t been able to get back into it. There’s just something so satisfying about playing other games that have an ending because you get that sense of completion. Going back to Genshin which feels never ending just seems intimidating and I don’t want to go back to neglecting other things I could be finishing.

Interesting topic for sure! I started in Sept 2022, so hitting the 1 year mark soon! My player phases/habits evolved. Once I exhaust something I still have some other content I can focus on (for now). I've finished Archon and Story Quests. I love those because they're voice acted and like to be the host account when my friends want to do bosses together. World quests on the other hand seem like a chore because I find it less interesting with the voice overs. Buuut I feel satisfied when I check off the quest from reputation NPCs list. I still have Sumeru to do now. I'm poop at character building but I love the battle mechanics so I try Spiral Abyss. Finally got to floor 12 last cycle! I see some quality of life things Star Rail but got bored of the combat really quick :/ It's definitely tough to say what causes the feeling of burn out. Depends how people play and for how long.

For me the burn out initially started with the dialogue and the amount of it. Sometimes there’s a 15 minute (auto play) scene between MC and the story character and they go on a huge speech just to tell me to go visit someone or do something. Like just tell me that at the start. But it really burnt me out with the desert section of Sumeru. They just kept extending it and making more and more convoluted puzzles that were so overly complicated and not well explained. So now I just get as many dendroculus as I can obtain and then I leave the area. I don’t know what content I’ll need to do to be able to travel to Fontaine when that comes out but I know I won’t be looking forward to completing it, simply because of the dialogue attached to the story/archon quest and the necessity of it. Also, let me have 5 characters on my team ffs. With all the characters and more to be added, how are we expected to limit ourselves to 4 at a time?!

Might turn into a longer comment but here's opinion of someone who has played since the launch. Please read the whole thing to understand something in the end. I've fallen in love with this game within minutes of playing it, the environment, art, how the game works, it all amazed me. I like anime, but I've never played an open world type of a game before so this was new to me, i didn't know how much I'd enjoy exploring and accomplishing stuff like solving puzzles, opening hard chests or getting rare achievements. 😅 From the start of the game until now it definitely had it's ups and downs when it comes to some patches being "Dead" to those who felt full of things to do for the most part. My opinion on how the game at core works is conflicted, because at one side it's supposed to be a casual game, but on the other hand, so many things like events/quests are timed, that if you're not there on time you'll miss it forever (That makes it not so casual) I have a privilege of working online and from home, so i generally have a good amount of time to game beside my other activities (No outside job or stuff like college) I have every current character in game available, all of them max ascended and at least lvl 80. About 15 5* and about 60 4* weapons maxed out, and so many characters built. Almost every achievement in the game and I've participated in like 95% of the events. Have every part of the map of each region explored at 100% etc. Friendship 10 with every character too. I also have every skin in the game, both free and paid ones. Highly built talents on every character too. So you can imagine how much time I've put into this game. And spent around $2500 in the past 3 ish years. Mostly battlepasses (Those that are $20 because i also collect namecards) and daily logins, but i have cleared all the topups in the shop few times. I've logged in almost every single day since I started playing. And despite all that, on times when there's active events or there's just small minigames atm, i login, do dailies, spend resin and that's usually where i Exit. As much as i and as much as You love it, this is not the type of a game nor is meant to be YOUR ONE AND ONLY game you play. (Unless you literally don't play more than 30-60min a day) then you'll get your gaming fill. But besides that, once you farm stuff and do daily things, if you've explored everything, there's sadly nothing more to do. So my advice is to keep playing, enjoy it as long as you enjoy the story, but if you need more game time definitely play other games to have the time fly by until there's a next update, which luckily in genshin doesn't take TOO long, update times are decent :)

what you said about being overwhelmed definitely resonated with me. i was a day 1 player, but took a break after dragonspine and would only play incredibly casually and log in to pull characters. now that i’m more fixated on the game, looking at my massive backlog is incredibly daunting, and i don’t even know where to start. the worst part, for me, is the abundance of choices when it comes to resin. do i farm boss/talent mats? or do i farm artifacts? if i do farm artifacts, which ones? what is “resin efficient” for my account? i often get so overwhelmed with it that i just condense my resin and do leylines lol

simple answer: aranara quest bloated answer: i think my burn out came after inazuma. after they kept adding island after island i was feeling it was getting to much for me. like i don't have enkonomya fully explored till this day. but at the time i didn't realize it and was playing with plastered happy face saying "this is fun!... right?" however then sumeru got announced and instead of being excited for the new map... i felt dread of having to explore another map. it looked beautiful but my motivation to do anything in there was at 0. i couldn't even pretend to be happy and hyped for it. i just felt dead. once it launched i walked few steps into sumeru and felt so unwilling to do anything. since then i played genshin less and less and ended up taking entire year off. and came back at nouvelette banner and even now i don't feel excited to explore sumeru which greets me with a slap in the face with this horrible, annoying aranara quest... no wonder

One thing that wasn't mentioned that causes burnout for me is having to build up new characters with limited resin. If I pull and get a cool new character, I can't use them right away because I have to spend so much time grinding to get them to up to the level of my team, or I need certain upgrade materials that are not available on that day. This means I have to pause doing what I actually enjoy doing like exploring to mindlessly grind.

Hi Sevy, I was listening to this video in the background. Some players burned out because of one or two reasons, but ALL the reasons you said in this video is why I've burnt out. I tried playing Genshin again for a few months, but stopped playing again since Star Rail came out. Star Rail takes a lot less time a day to play, and I love auto battles. I do like Genshin and hope I can make another return, but I'll need to have the same mindset you have, by not having negative emotions or being overwhelmed with everything. But thanks for all the content you put out! I hope to come by your stream again to say hi.

I’ve seen a lot of people on social media getting burned out and some of the community not being very sympathetic to them about it 😅 we can all be susceptible to it imo, regardless of how we like to play the game. I took a 9 month break during Sumeru as I was bored and frustrated with the gameplay loop and lack of combat endgame content outside of the abyss, but coming back to it a month ago I can say I’m really enjoying myself again and remembered why I fell in love with the game.
