Sew Perfect Outdoor Trousers Step By Step Tutorial

In this step by step tutorial, I teach you how to sew the perfect DIY trousers for your handmade wardrobe. I used the Bisque Trousers pattern by Vivian Shao Chen and added extra details to make them perfect for my needs. These easy to sew trousers are made for climbing and I'm so excited to take them on my next outdoor rock climbing trip. You will learn how to install rivets, how to create adjustable ankle cuffs, and how to sew double knee front patches for jeans or trousers. Ahh yes I totally understand. I’ve got a big 🍑 and small waist, which is often not conducive to climbing clothes that are drafted for people with a much smaller frame than me. My all time favorites were the Moon Climbing Samurai pants, but they still weren’t perfect because the rise wasn’t quite tall enough. I love being able to make clothes that are much more personalized to my aesthetic and functional needs 🙌 I’d love to hear how yours come out if you make them!

I love this idea! I have been struggling lately to find a pair of climbing trousers for bouldering because I'm a big booty Judy and I just can't seem to find any that actually fit me! I'll just try to sew my own! :D

Yesss you totally should! I also have a hard time finding climbing pants that fit. They always seem to be suuuper tight in the crotch/hip region and not as high waisted as I prefer, but sewing your own means getting the perfect fit and all the extra personalized details that I love 🙌 I’d love to hear how yours go!

@@jessilous_closet I finally got around to make 2 pair of my own climbing trousers! :D I used a pair of trousers that I already had for the pattern. My knee patches are a little bit shorter (only around the knee) and I added front pockets, instead of the ones in the seam. But they turned out to be so pretty and they fit really well. Thanks for the inspiration and great video! 😍😍

Great job. One recommendation is to add a web belt with plastic buckle so that the weight of your carbiner doesn't drag your pants down. Just another layer of security. Would adding a zipper top to one of the back pockets be useful for climbing? Just thinking of a spot to put ID. and credit card where it can't slip out.

You can TOTALLY do it!! I would say the pattern errs on the side of confident beginner. I have a tutorial for the shorts version on my KZbin as well. That might be a great place to start because then you can learn all the skills you need, but it’s a lot lower stakes since you’d be using much less fabric and also less time in general to make them. Just bought the pattern for these, they look great. Do you know if you made view A or B? The wide or the tapered leg

Hi! These ones are the wide leg view and I added an adjustable cinch at the ankles. I’ve also made the tapered leg and they’re both great. Although, I will say that the wide leg isn’t very wide. If I was comparing it to a wide leg vs a straight leg jean, I’d say they lean more towards straight than wide. If I made them again, I’d probably slash and spread the pattern to get a wider fit 😊

This looks really nice! I do have a question though, is top stitching thread a special kind of thread? or is it just a different color thread? I've never heard this term before. Keep up the good work! Looking forward of seeing more from you :)

Hi Maria! Thank you! Yes, topstitching thread is a special thread that has a heavier weight than traditional thread. It’s only used on top through the needle, never as the bobbin. The bobbin thread doesn’t need to change when using the top stitching thread. The reason someone might choose to use topstitching thread is as a design detail because it’s thicker and more visually prominent. It’s most commonly found as brown thread on a classic pair of blue denim jeans. You could also use normal thread to top stitch, it would just me a thinner thread so the look is a bit different :)

Thank you so much for the kind words and feedback! I’ve been thinking a lot about this recently and am trying to find a good balance between keeping the viewers attention, but also capturing the true slow/calm nature of the sewing practice. I think I’ll experiment with some slower paced videos and see how they do. I’d love any other feedback you have now or in the future ♥️

when you sew the darts (I know this is rudimentary) do you sew ALL the way to the edge of the fabric (or like..over it) since you tie the knot over it anyways?

When I sew darts, I basically sew as close to off of the fabric as I can get, then I hand crank the wheel so that the very last stitch just barely catches the fibers of the fabric, then I pull it off the machine to hand tie the knot 🤗

Hahaha well you can make cute outfits regardless of if you climb, but climbing is super fun so is highly recommend trying it out if you’re interested 🙌
