I understand the logic behind a muted colour palette but think that the opposite is what we all need to cheer us up. I’m so glad I have the ability to sew so I don’t have to rely on the high street for my wardrobe!

Agree in spring I need colour - in the garden and in my clothes and accessories - as a cheer me up.

The psychology this year seems variable. I am noticing a lot of people who are down, angry, fed up. Meanwhile, others are positively exuberant. And others seem to go up and down, like running hot and cold water. Wonder what is going on.

Love an oversized cotton trench and the boxy tee and I'm a little bit in love with 'stealth wealth' - which is much more 'grown up' and understated than what I would usually go for. What I love about making your own clothes is that you can go against the grain and add pattern and colour where you need it - what a boring world if we all followed the trends and didn't add our own individuality.

For the trench coat, I love my Vogue 1650 for classic trench coat - not for beginners but it’s beautifully tailored. And for the cropped trench coat, I’ve made two of the Grainline Studio Cortland Trench - it has two back flap variations and depending on your fabrication, can look really different. I think the Cortland is unlined but it was easy to draft a lining. Thanks, Kate for the great episode!

Always fun to see what the trends are and how you interpret them for us. I will not be touching any of the colours with a ten-foot pole, I have swatched every neutral and muted pastel and they simply aren't wearable with me. However, I do love some of the silhouettes, and I'm interested to see the following video with bottom halves!

I'm loving the muted stuff - not that I don't think people look great in bright colours and prints, but I don't - I'm such an untidy looking person as it is somehow (mainly my wispy hair I guess!) so I love a bit of muted Cos-style stuff. Another great video, can't wait for the dresses next week!

First, Kate, I loved watching you walk and talk on the high street, it seemed to bring out a whole other lovely side of you. Second, I have a couple of outerwear recommendations: Liesl and Co just came out with a fantastic trench coat pattern, the Prado Trench, that looks wildly versatile. She's made it in everything from a drapey viscose to nubbly wool, and there's a short version too (it's unlined, but she's done a blog post about how to line it). If you like a slightly oversized, fashion-forward bomber, I'd go with Trend Patterns TPC4 Bomber pattern; it's got some interesting details, like darts on the sleeves.

I enjoyed your pattern hunting work very much - thank you! The trends themselves don’t appeal so much this spring. I definitely want bright colours and prints at this time of year. Plus I think a person has to be model slim to look good in those boxy shapes, which I am most definitely not. But I do like the long sleeved polo shirt, and I look forward to seeing the dresses!

This is interesting to me. I wonder about their need to save money which might result in less fast-fashion and more in staple wardrobe pieces. More longevity? Thanks as always.

Great breakdown as usual, but to the pattern/design world.... Pleeeeeeeze can we break free of "oversized, baggy, boxy?" There's centuries of human aesthetics and tailoring experience creating different versions of silhouette. The massive shapeless garments thing is just sad.
@SuzieBlue71610 ай бұрын
I think one of the reasons for oversized and boxy is the manufacturing - cheaper and quicker to produce in comparison to fitted garments

I don't follow fashion very closely, so my opinion is probably quite uneducated, but spring is looking rather meh to me. I giggled when you said "I bet you have something creamy" in your wardrobe because the answer is a firm NO. No whites of any shade because I'm a complete klutz and will find a way to stain a white (or other light color) garment in two seconds flat. 😂
@litestreamer10 ай бұрын
I 'll look at trends with some interest, but I don't care for this Spring color palette at all - most of the models look drab and masculine, and defy the whole 'wear the colors that suit one's own color palette'. Plus if a woman is carrying extra weight, w/ these boxy looks, will seem she's wearing potato sacks. My guides are: 1) choosing colors that suit my skin, eyes and hair palette 2) choosing fabrics that are comfy, easy care, and organic vs. synthetic, 3) going for lines that complement my figure 4) choosing to sew or buy pieces work with what I already own, that are not too costly, and have that timeless appeal.
@MM-pe9ik10 ай бұрын

Hmm. Apart from the bomber and the cropped trench, not a lot of interest. If I hear 'boxy' and 'oversized' from the fashion pundits again... not good. I understand the reasoning behind it - relaxed, not too stiff - but sadly it suits few figures. I feel fashion manufacturers are serving up oversized as a lazy way of selling to the widest variety of sizes. I think I'll stick with traditionally tailored, which can do 'oversized' so much more elegantly and flattering. And I shall ignore the dull colour trend, which reflects these depressing, uncertain times. Thanks Kate for the summary and pattern roundup (I'm looking at one of those cropped trenches).
