I love my Martelli. Once I got used to it I can’t use any other one. I have arthritis and it is so much better for me.

I'll preface my comment that everyone's preference is just that, their preference. My preference is for the Martelli which is hands down is my favorite rotary cutter (but I only have the Olfa as a reference point). I believe that it keeps the wrist position more neutral and allows you to cut from your shoulder v. your wrist. If used correctly, the blade pressure is working from top down v. pushing the fabric from the bottom up. It works beautifully with my Stripology ruler and my Slidelock! Martelli has videos that show you how to change the blade as well as how to use the tool effectively. I have never had a problem with the tool veering, but I have several years of muscle memory in the tool.

I agree it is preference. I do want to try the rotary cutter more. I think a huge factor for me is that the way it is held is so different from what I am used to. I need to give it a few more tries.

My go to is the OLFA 45 I have the 60 and the 28 also. I also like endurance blades. My hands are slightly crippled and they handle these tools just fine. I think it is a blessing that there is a huge range of tools and gadgets for every need.

I have the Martelli, I love it. It did take some getting use to, since I had the curved Olfa with the lock, before. I liked it very much. You need to find what works for you, not everyone is going to like the same cutter. I would suggest watching the Martelli video on them if you decide to try one.

Wendi, as I mentioned in the video, I am the type of person that just likes to go, so I am not generally a fan of something with a learning curve if other alternatives are available. I do want to try the left hand version, though, to see if I like it more than the right hand version.

2 comments. The Riley Blake cutter was limited edition but a splash cutter is the same. Martelli makes a specific one for left handed people. It takes getting used to but is really good for wrist pain. I switch between these 2. Love them both.

Ergonomic Olfa is my fav!! Fun to see the different cutters! My Hubby cuts setting down, he has MD, And loves the Martelli cutter. I dislike it,but I cut standing.

Creative Grids is amazing. It’s metal weight is great. No strain on the wrist or shoulder because you don’t have to put pressure on it. Best purchase I’ve ever made. I actually have 4 of them.

I am left handed and I LOVE my Martelli rotary cutter. I am so much more accurate when cutting. If the blade is sharp it cuts like butter. Very little pressure is needed for me.

That was great. I bought a Martelli, as I’ve seen others use it and they loved it. I’ve not tried to use it as yet! My husband thinks it s more like a pizza cutter. I think like most things, it would take practice. I’ve got a couple of ergonomic ones, but still prefer basic straight handled ones. Thanks for doing this. ❤️🇦🇺

Very informative! Thanks for the in-depth review. You made some very interesting points. One thing I’ve seen is that with the Martelli and thicker cuts, the blade can sometimes go sideways a bit. To be honest, the Martelli scares me lol. Most of the others I have tried and use. My go-to is a Kai. I don’t know why…must fit right. I think when you find one you like, stick with it, buy good blades and you’re good to go!

Martelli has a left handed rotary cutter that is blue, the right handed rotary cutter is red. You got to use what is most comfortable- everyone is different. Thanks for the video!

Loved your "deep dive" into rotary cutters. You answered questions I did not even know I had. As for the Martelli, I have one but have never used it long enough to get used to it. I have several problems with my right hand and it makes my right index finger hurt just watching others use it!

GM, I have some of these rotary cutters. On all of them, I changed the blades to titanium blades, which helped a lot. The Martelli brand is for those who have problems with the wrist or corpel tunnel. I love your opinions. Great input to test other brands.

Favorite cutters hands down are the Creative Grids and Quilters Select. The weight of the cutter does a lot of the work for you. The weight actually reduces the strain.

Tiffany, isn't it so weird how different a cutter can feel in the other hand? The 60mm Olfa felt "meh" in my right hand, but wow, when I put it in my left hand, it became the most lovely thing in the world. I think I am going to try a left hand version of the Martelli to see if I like it more than the right hand version.

I love the Martelli cutter. I was very hesitant to try it but I had such pain in my wrist and palm after a few hours of cutting that I couldn’t sew for a couple of days afterwards. My husband bought the Martelli for me to try. It was awkward for the first 4 or 5 cuts buts once I got used to it I loved it. It is my favorite cutter now. I can cut scraps all day long with no discomfort at all. However, I would never have given it a chance if I didn’t have the pain that I was dealing with.

I agree with the issue with the Martelli. I have one. I have tried it often. It veers off my ruler and I get a bad cut in my fabric. (Wasteful). I love the Olfa with the trigger handle. I have one with the stick handle, which is pretty easy to use and comfortable. I also use the Olfa stick 60 mm. Very comfortable and feels safe to use. Thanks for doing this. I bet it helps many people make good choices.

Lolol Firstly, when im cutting no matter what cutter , I can't have the fabric that close to the edge of mat ( near my body) If do I can't ever get that first cpl inches to cut completely thru out straight. Lol On that same note.. I won't get a proper cut with my body directly in front of fabric. I need to line my arm up with the work nicer my body to the left. Umm I'm cutting R handed, so I step to the left a step or 2. That way my arm is in line with task then it takes way less pressure to cut a solid thorough cut and because my arm is essentially not cutting around my body. Of the top of say stand to the side of the work. It might be you were both in a anak area and trying to get in the can shot. I'm not sure. .. lol Tnot sure if I'm making it clear. But if you put your an in front of your body it's no longer Ergonomic and is a forced cut exec auth your Fav cutter. If your arm hangs straight down to your side, eden you raise it up to cut that alignment should stay the same. Maybe that makes more sense. 😂 Then when arm comes up to cut its still on alignment, ergo hand stays Ergonomic with body and cutting is less stressful on hands arms etc. Will naturally take less effort and naturally safer. You should get a better cut with the wurst cutter. In my humble opinion😊 😂 I'll makes that first "struggle bus cut". Then as roll my eyes like dang i knew better "step to the side n cut it riiight" lol yes I sing my own goofy songs regularly! Lol Secondly, Cutters the Martelli i find my own way to hold it that was comfy n totally natural as well. But it's unlike all the others and took a few days to find my sweet spot. And on that note, I think everyone I've seen as well as myself. Tap to the right or left of the fabric on the mat to open cutter prior to cutting. I do enjoy the Martelli as it's far less stress on my hand and wrist. It's broken my hand a cpl yrs ago. I feel it in my wrist quickly. But not Werth that cutter. Now your old Fiskars i have one like the new white n gray just 45 mm and a really old purple one same style. I really love it. But they are but smaller only 45. But I picked up the SPLASH by olfa and oddly enough I really like it too. On the cutter note lol.. Quilters Select is supposed to phenomenal. Because it's a lil weightier. After seeing the Omnigrids , heavy red one i really think they may be the same with lil differences. That's another purchase and I Select be surprised with all these that Wouldnt be a Be "a necessary to try." 😅 I do think a lil weight would help in not needing any extra pressure. And for some reason I do think it would help with Control might sound odd but I tohave larder hands lol and I equate it with .. weren't I get behind the wheel of a car abs the steering wheel feels as tho we're not connected and the car will essentially do and go where it wants. Because I don't have the getting of control. I think that's why I do still love and use the Fiskars with the lil handle. That thicker in your hand feel.. give your the getting of control > does that Make ANY SENSE AT ALL🤪 lol something to small i need to go tighter then I inadvertently press harder to roll and cut. Effectively wasting any creative energy I could be putting into doing more and getting things done. Well I reckon I've gone on long enough ✅ LIST : 1A-arm alignment ✅ OH, having the mat itself to close to the edge of the table you need to touch the elbow back almost behind yourself then push forward like a curve ball into a straight ball. That's to much to coordinate and follow thru on. Start straight & stay straight less to go wonky or cause unnecessary issues & pain ✅✅ 1B- fabric to close to the body at edge of mat , step aside Clyde ✅ 2- CUT'N EZ or not! As a health care worker, I would highly advise using a rotary cutter that automatically closes the blade if dropped. I saw a woman whose “locked” open cutter, sliced her foot when it slipped and fell. She nearly lost her foot. Just a little warning. I love your content and thanks for the video.

Oh that’s awful! Those blades are so sharp even when they are too dull for fabric! I know all of these we tried need a button or lever pressed to engage the blade cover. Do you know of one that closes automatically. I’m going to try to look and see.

The Olfa ergonomic blade will automatically be covered if the handle is released. I use that one in two sizes and never lock the blade in place. If I were to drop it, the blade would retract and not be exposed to cut me. The handle does have to be held to cut, but I don’t get bothered by that. Thanks for all of your great videos.

I have tried most except creative grid. I probably own these plus others. I also had carpal tunnel in both wrist and cubical in both elbows. I also owned many many braces (lol) Surgery on all and Martelli rotary cutters and I won't buy any others now. I feel all cutters cut well the first time. Martelli not only saves my wrist but the blades last forever!!❤ I'm a Martelli fan❤ 🎉

It was interesting to hear both of your takes on the various brands. I use the Olfa ergonomic rotary cutter for years and really like it. I have also used and like the Quilter's select rotary cutter. It is on the pricey side but it has a good feel and the blades are very easy to change.

This was a great comparison video. Thanks for risking your fingers so we don't have to.😊 I was a Martelli skeptic but they had a great sale around Christmas so I thought I'd give it a try. For me it definitely relieves stress on my wrist. The finger rest is just that, I apply pressure with the palm of my hand, not my finger. The downside is blade changing...not convenient at all. It's also a bit fiddly to clean out lint from the blade area. I've learned to flick the blade guard release on the edge of the table, so thats not an issue anymore. My other two cutters are the basic green and yellow Clover brand, I especially like their 28mm for trimming, both have comfortable grips. Has anyone tried the TrueCut Rotary cutter? Or their accompanying ruler? Their right angled handle looks odd, but maybe its comfortable? 🤔 Enjoyed the video!

Very interesting! One thing that has always puzzled me is how tight to tighten the screw when inserting a blade. It seems like there should be a mark or a stop or something to show it is right. I love the Fiskars 45 that has the plump round handle like the white 60 Fiskars you showed. I have arthritis and it is so comfortable in my hand. It looks to me like the Martelli would work better if cutting sitting down so that your elbow is at the same level as what you are cutting. Thanks for the demo!

The first cutter I bought was a very cheap left or right easy flip just like the very expensive one you had. Then I bought the Olfa 60m and loved it. It was the same shape as the first one. Then I bought the Olfa 45m and it was great. And now I use most the Fisker 60m (gray and white) and it is really great until I use it for 30 mins or more. It rubs the tops of my fingers. It was given tome with a tub of fabrics from a friend.

I have the Martelli left and honestly don’t like it. I find it awkward to use opening and closing. I love my olfa have had for years it cuts when I apply pressure and closes when I raise my hand it also locks. I don’t know if they still make. Agree that changing blade is scary. It can also be left or right.

Like the video. I have had to have carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists, just before the surgery, if I hadn't changed to the Martelli cutter, I would not have been able to cut fabric. I feel like I was able to get back to cutting fabric sooner after surgery with the Martelli cutter. It does take a bit to get used yo, but i feel like it is time we'll spent.

I've used the Olfa ergonomic cutter mostly, works fairly well. Got one of the Fiskar's ones a few years ago and have only used it a couple of times, the handle is just so uncomfortable for me. Recently I got a Martelli cutter on a deep discount sale, but haven't tried it yet - I'd heard it was good for people with arthritis or other hand problems. I had a bad fall last year and did a great job banging up my right hand, so was hoping it might help. If not I guess I'm only out $7.50.

The Martelli doesn't work for me either. Maybe it is just me, but mine seems to want to drift to the right and the blade feels flimsy. Otherwise I started out with Fiskars and I still like it, but my go to is my pink Olfa. Thanks for your demo. I watch most of your videos.

I always used the Fiskars ergonomic cutter until I used the Olfa ergonomic cutter that automatically retracts the blade. That is my favorite now. I have small hands so the ergonomic ones seem to be more comfortable to me. And I love the blade to auto retract. I also have arthritis and the Olfa does not cause hand fatigue for me.

The biggest reason that you don't like the Martelli is because neither of you are holding it correctly, a very common mistake. Please watch their video to learn how to use it properly.

I’m not sure what the video shows, but the instructions which came with the cutter explicitly state to hold as we were; gripping the handle with all fingers other than the index finger, while the index finger is placed atop the blade guard. If the video shows something different, they should update the instructions which come with the cutter.

A tip for the Martelli. Your cutting arm should be in line with the cut. In otherworldly your hand should not be in front of your body.

You put out a video a few weeks ago about your new pressure ruler, you just purchased. Any way this is what I call it. It’s lovely….. I’ve talked to a few people at stores. The only thing that they suggest is, is to make it a true ruler with numbers on it on all four sides to help us cut and measure! Please let me know when you make these changes and I will definitely purchase one… ha ha ha I just looked at the bottom of your video and it is called a quick slider. Can’t wait till you update this so I can get one.

The Slidelock is not a ruler but a robust cutting guide and fabric manager (keeping things put!). I have had mine (short and long) for several years. I pair it with a regular ruler to make the measure from right to left using my favorite measuring ruler. I butt the left edge of my ruler against the right edge of the Slidelock and ensure that the fabric edge is running straight and true on the measurement ruler. I then I cut against the Slidelock edge.

Just sayin'. ;) Once I found the Olfa ergonomic, that retracts automatically when you take your hand off of it, I stopped looking. I'm a klutz, I don't need to worry about forgetting to retract a blade and then dropping on my foot.

I love my Olfa ergonomics, I have 4. The Quilters Select fights me way too much, I hated mine and got rid of it. I’d go back to a Fiskars stick version before I get a QS cutter. Love their rulers however. Martelli was too fiddly to use, lint builds up so badly and it’s hard to use for me. I have EDS and awful joints in my hands/wrists.

it is funny how your favorite one is one of the least expensive. Did you know with FISKARS, there is a life time guarantee on their cutters. They replaced for no charge my broken one. It was at least 15 years old. I sent a picture and a little note, and about a month later, a brand new one arrived in the mail.

Look at the back of your hand, with your fingers closed, the line across your knuckles is not square. That would be why the blade is off-set?

You are not using the Martelli cutter correctly. You are trying to cut with your finger and putting a lot of pressure on your index finger. I had a Martelli cutter for 10 years but I never knew how to use it till I went to a quilt fair and was shown how to use it. I mostly have used the Olfa ergonomic cutter but the blades (even the endurance blades) do not last. Maybe, you should watch some videos on how to hold it properly and how your body alignment affects the way you cut. I would say there is room for improvement on the Martelli. As your husband mentioned that you have to have a start to get the blade out which I also do not like.

I don’t think Mr Fallon was standing at a proper position using his left hand. I think it would be more comfortable if your hand was in the same position where you were cutting. I may not have said it right but I hope you understand what I’m saying.

I am left handed and bought a left handedMartelli…..never use it!
