My mom made me a chiton for my HS Latten class event where we held a Roman "debate". Our teachers played the king/queen/oracle. The advanced middle school history classes prepared presentations on issues of the time like taxes and farming and the Latten classes were the pesant peanut gallery. Everyone was dressed up and it was an all-day event.

The dress turned out great. And you looked fabulous in it. So glad you persevered and got it all done. I have trouble with the sun also, but not the same. If I am out in the sun too much, and for sure if I have any adult beverage, I can get a migraine headache. I am so careful at parties to be in the shade, or wear a hat, drink lots of water…… I just never know when it will strike. And some can be vicious. Gorgeous! What a wonderful color too!! Yesterday I hand sewed silk velvet ribbon on to a tank top. Had I thought about it I would not have bought silk velvet ribbon because I loathe hand sewing, but pin scars and poor control on the machine made handwork the fastest and least annoying way to go.

Actually for Ancient Greece/Rome its just two tube dresses. You don't even need to seam them, you just need to finish the edges. In period they would have been woven to size so no need for even that! Length adjustments comes from blousing over the first layer fabric bely. The decorative belting holds the folds in place once you have it where you like. What you have there seems more of a Fortuny Era setup, which is pretty cool as a bias thing. Your hair looked lovely dressed in all the curls. Plainly you were a vampire in your previous life ;-D

As someone who wears a lot of tied and pinned on things, and who watches a lot of historical content, I'm pretty sure Noelle knows historically speaking she doesn't have to sew this. However if you hadn't noticed she is very "comfy" clothing oriented. As comfy as I find theses draped dresses Im not at all sure she would have the patience to fiddle with it all day as I do. So for people like her, it just makes sense to sew it.if she's going for a look rather than historical accuracy. Besides again, this is her job I'm pretty sure she knows she could just throw on a length of fabric and get away with it.

The pictures look very good, my fav is the last one. Really looks like classical history bounding done right. The fabric probably was difficult to tame, but it photographs beautifully. I had not heard of a sun allergy. When I go out in the sun (just to walk to places nothing athletic), I sneeze, my eyes tear and sometimes my nose runs (have been patch tested so it is not hay fever). These symptoms were before the pandemic, so now when walking in the real world I really scare strangers! None of my symptoms are bad enough to send me to Benadryl, but good to know that it is there if I need it.

Now I want to make a chiton. So simple, so comfy-looking. I wonder if I could hem it to tea length, use a big old belt, and get away with it on the weekends running errands. it seems so much simpler than the crocheted silk skirt I'm making (takes for ever, but feels so nice on my fingers) And you have a modern slip pattern now in that bias cut dress! Or fancy pajamas! I don't get sun poisoning, but I am prone to heat rash anywhere my skin touches itself for more than five minutes while I'm outside in the sun. That's exactly as (un)pleasant as it sounds.

Sun sickness stinks. I risk it almost every time I go out...and am allergic to benadryl. The dress is quite lovely and so simple. Maximum results for minimum efforts :) And the pictures are gorgeous. You just need fairy wings (or butterfly wings) ^^ I've been dealing with celluitis and related fever with that (also the 'fussy' type of 'can't focus on anything and really uncomfy in everything' thing, but it's getting better....now at the itchy phase when anything brushes against it). 0/10, do not recommend. As to books, I've been reading some embroidery related cozy mysteries, which are good enough to hold attention, but not 'omg, I need to share these' good....also I might try embroidery. I know cross-stitch isn't for me, but there are other forms and I somehow ended up with a full set of embroidery needles (including ribbon embroidery needles), so there's that. I have linen scraps I can use to practice, when time and energy allow.

That is a really beautiful garment now! And those pictures are very pretty. Sorry to hear you got sun sickness. :( That sounds like a sucky condition to have. I also wanted to make a chiton for a while, but a Doric chiton, not an Ionic one, and also shorter, like the ones that men wore. But I haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm currently reshaping a couple of linen garments that I got from a friend. They are all in weird "boutique style" cuts which is not my cup of tea and they also don't fit me, but I am reworking them into historically inspired things. Right now I am felling seams on a early medieval men's wear inspired short tunic which I made out of a black shirt-jacket. I took off the buttons, the sleeves, the collar and the pockets, altered the shape, reattached the facings and will eventually redo the sleeves. It will be adorned with a narrow trim that I got from a childhood friend in Latvia ages ago and which I never knew what to do with. Next in line is another linen jacket (a long one) which I will turn into an art nouveau inspired summer dress.

The heat sickness reminded me of a story of the person who first suspected germs being a thing and dying of something related to childbed fever in a lunatic asylum in his 40s, after having offended all the doctors who wore their gory autopsy coats as badges of honor. I didn't realize those were related until you pointed it out.

This was a delightful project to see & stoked to see your wonderful vlogs again. ^_^ I've been working on my winter wool skirts; I've been floundering back and forth on learning pattern drafting, sinking into it then avoiding then coming back to it, rinse and repeat. But I've *Finally* managed to get a bodice and skirt block made and confirmed they fit really well; then used the energy and confidence that gave me to adapt the skirt block into a loosely Edwardian style to make a wool skirt. I made a wearable mockup with a wool fabric I bought in a colour I like but don't love so it's less scary. I just need to hem and add the final back closure (for simplicity, I used a zipper but it needs a button or hook to hold the waistband), but the process of sewing wiped me out a few more days so it's just been chilling on my dress form. Overall it's turned out better than I hoped, and thankfully I absorbed enough info from the many videos I've seen of people working with wool that I think it actually constructed ok. I'm so hyped with how it's turning out as I am in struggle town with the cold weather as Winter has come early and several factors make me feel so much worse for it. I've got plans to tweak the pattern, but mostly the construction process of the waistband as it came out bulky. Then it's final skirt time as I have a lovely dusky pink wool fabric which has been taunting me since last winter. Then it's apron/pinafore time as I want a layer to protect the wool while I'm out, since these will mostly be when I'm outside and in my powerchair. Plus in a couple weeks I'm going on a cute weekend away with my partner and we're staying at a BNB that was built in 1902 and has leaned into that Aesthetic, so that's been a great deadline to push me to keep focus on this particular project as I kept finding other things to make. ^^; As for watching, reading, etc, I've just been swept up in House in the Cerulean Sea, which was utterly gorgeous and heartwarming and heartbreaking and I fully recommend it. I've just started Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, and it's also been enthralling, it's a beefy book but I've still gotten 1/3 way through in about a day, which is unusual with how my chaos brain has been recently.

Loved the color and the long curls! You look gorgeous! Just wondering if Greek women needed to carry anything, how did they do it? Tying it up in a fold of the dress?
@akashanumberfive199 Жыл бұрын
They had a thing that looked like a coin purse. But if I remember correctly, most of them didn't carry it. They had the slaves carry things instead. The overdress requires you to be congnizant of the fabric where it is and where it moves. In that way, only roman women who wanted to show that they were respectable ladies would wear it because then their hands would be busy.

OOOO Your Costume came out great!!! I'm doing well, just finishing up work (before summer break) before sewing loads of things. I picked up some commissions because work has been super slow and bills don't take that as an excuse. Currently I'm listening to my street being resurfaced. Reading: well I finished the binge on the author I had found and now I've gone back to the new releases of series I had started. I'm rethinking the fabric I used for my new walking skirt and think I'm going to go ahead an remake the 90% finished walking skirt I made and use some lovely linen. Why? Because I have FARRRR too much time between event and now and I always rethink my costumes. ROFL Noooowww its breakfast time.

Love love love this, you looked gorgeous in that chiton. I have Hashimoto's Hypothyroidism which means I can't regulate my temperature so extremes of heat and cold really suck for me. I can get migraines when it's over 35°C (95°F) and I'm completely dead if it's over 40°C (104°F). People don't believe me when I say I'm not well because of the heat and you just can't explain it to them 🤷🏽♀️ so I don't bother trying. At least I have a diagnosis to blame. I'm still on the Regency evening gown rabbit hole but seriously need to get a job this year. Haven't watched or listened to much lately.

Ah! You look fantastic! Also yes, I am brown and I still get horrible sun sickness, hives included 😂

I adore the color of your chiton! I'm currently dealing with allergic conjunctivitis which is putting a serious damper on my motivation, but I've been working on some more wrap style clothes so I have very comfortable things to wear around the house. I'm in between books right now and waiting for something on my holds to come available from my library.

Fun quick creation and love the turquoise color! I know that location as I grew up around in that area. Good spots for walking and biking trails too.

Wanted to add: sorry about sun-sickness. Heat exhaustion and weather related hives are not fun. I've had (thankfully) minor infrequent ones and yes talking an allergy med Benadryl for the win, and doing what's recommended for first aid for heat exhaustion is important.

I love the pictures!! The dress turned out beautifully! (Not that I doubted it would!) I'm learning to sew on streachy fabric with limited success. Hope to have more research time over the weekend.

What a gorgeous color! I love how this turned out! A pair of Grecian goddesses at the temple for the photo shoot. You looked like you had fun :) I'm currently making linen caps for a medieval event I'm attending next weekend.

@@Costuming_Drama The weather fluctuated more drastically than I expected but otherwise yes. I even sold a couple of the new caps. And it was nice to be in medieval clothes and outside again.

Definitely you look like a goddess in the photos. I'm knitting socks and them some gloves, {it's Autumn here in the southern hemisphere}. I don't get sick in the sun, but get sick it I'm inside for more than 8 hours, so go outside or always have a window or door open near me.
