An old-school sewing trick is that with woven fabrics you can use strips of the fabric selvedge as stay tape. I always enjoy your videos about making home sewing fresh and fashionable. Your dress turned out cute!

Hi Sally. Love your dress and fabric choice. When I make these types of ties, I fold the seam allowance of the short side to the inside of one end of the tie before sewing. I turn the tie using a baby/nappy pin because they will not open while in use. Once the tie has been turned, I can hand stitch or topstitch the short end closed.

Finished dress looks fabulous, as usual with your makes! Leaving a hem to hang is so important, I was taught many years ago to leave any hem to hang for at least 24 hrs but a flared or circle hem should be left for 3 days! It is worth it but as I’ was usually hemming and ironing just before I was going to wear the garment I’m not sure I always stuck to those rules! I’m a bit more slow and steady these days but the urge to just get the last hem done is still strong! You made a great job of hacking this pattern, the finished garment is great and I like it much better than the high street version you shared! ❤

Thank you so much! Yes lesson learned about levelling the hem. I have to say it’s one of my least favourite jobs to do though, so hard to get it right!! X

@@SecretLifeOfASeamstress yes I agree, especially if you are doing it on your own, and as it’s at the end of the project, I have a tendency to rush it, if I’m not careful!

Your dress is lovely. That hack wouldn't work for me, as by removing the gathers, the bust shaping has gone. You can get away with it for your figure, but I'm bustier, so would have to mess around adding darts, not my favourite occupation :-) It does make sense to hack patterns already owned, as patterns are now so expensive. I need to get braver and better at it.
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress Жыл бұрын
Ah yes I realise that now. I guess we all just have to mess around with patterns and see what works for us don’t we 😊 Thank you for watching xx
@Hide_and_silk
@Hide_and_silk Жыл бұрын
I was just about to say the same. The gathers are the rotated bust dart so, to remove the gathers, you need to create a dart with the excess at the top and then rotate it back to the side.
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress Жыл бұрын
@@Hide_and_silk I think that’s why I tried to emphasise that my hacks are in no way professional advice. I just like to experiment. Thanks for sharing for anyone that might like to try and need to bust dart xx

Ah thank you! A couple of people have pointed out that by taking out the yoke and gathers you lose the bust shaping so if you have a larger bust than me (B cup) you might need to consider that. I still find it fairly roomy enough though 😊 x

What is the difference between stay tape and stay stitching? Could you use ribbon instead of stay tape? Really nice hack, I love your hacking skills! Would you mind making the music softer or lower in future videos please? Thank you
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress

I think the tape ensures stability in the long term. You could use ribbon as long as it doesn't have stretch to it such as grosgrain I believe. Thank you and thanks so much for watching :) xx
