I'm impressed that you actually finished this project. Poor pattern design and poor instructions plus difficult fabric equals a project put away and forgotten about! I actually made a simple A-line skirt for a granddaughter out of a fabric just like that. At the time I didn't know about a walking foot or a teflon foot and none of the machines I had would sew the fabric at all, at least not with a standard foot. I already had the fabric all cut out and, as I said, it was a simple pattern so I sewed it completely by hand. I like to topstitch all my seams for strength and so they will always lay flat, so I did that by hand, too. I actually enjoyed making it so the next time I had a project ready to be sewn with a fabric my newest machine refused I just went ahead and did it by hand, too. That was some kind of fleece made into a night shirt, another simple pattern, for another granddaughter. This time I felled the seams and I think it was a success and kind of fun to do.

Just got through your pants tutorial. My comment isn’t going to be timely enough to solve the problem. However, the underside of the zipper should have been sewn flat so that the zipper doesn’t touch your body. The waist band should have been sewn before the zipper so that the zipper lays on top of the already folded band. The band can be stitched in the ditch. The raw edge can be covered with a thin seam binding or bias tape for a cleaner finish. I love watching your tutorials. Thanks.

Hi I love your channel and have gotten started sewing again. I also have several patterns that you are making or made and they look so nice that I want to make them for me. The zipper problem you had is one we had years ago, (I am talking about jr high so it is many years). The mock fly zipper is that the fly is mock not the zipper. Our home ec teacher showed us this and it can be easy. I wish I could show you what I am talking about but I am very technically challenged. Thank you for sharing your sewing adventures with us, you are so inspiring. I really love the culottes, I think I must have some.

Happy birthday! I made this pattern twice, once in cotton and once in linen. Each time my zipper ended up getting covered on that one side like yours did. It’s definitely a problem with the pattern not the seamstress. I’m sorry you didn’t like them. I’m also an hourglass shape and I love mine (minus the zipper thing).

I understood the term ‘mock fly’ to refer to a trouser front with a ‘grown on’ fly piece. As opposed to a fly front which has a separate fly piece/zipper guard? Was a zipper included on the list of notions?

Yep. Zipper is demanded in the instructions too 🤣

Marie, Color me confused... What is the theory of why the biggest size (16) would cut the piece out with a thinner seam allowance (inside), vs the smaller size being cut out with a wider S/A (@ approx the 8:10 point of the video... When you were talking about cutting out piece 6). What am I not understanding? I feel like I'm 'missing' something very basic. How does a smaller size give you MORE room in the leg/hip? Thanks...

It's just the way it was laid out on the page. The bigger size is bigger.

Those were horrible instructions! I was looking at the pattern tissue laid out on your table, where the fly markings were clearly visible, thinking… Marie, thats _not_ a mock fly. Oh well. You overcame. I. STUPIDLY went to make a long Vogue coat out of that fabric about 25 years ago. Apart from the fabric costing a fortune, as well as the pattern costing an extra fortune. I actually broke my sewing machine! The machine, the partially sewn coat and the pattern all went in the bin. I’d blessedly forgotten until yours started fighting back. You did well. Thankyou for showing me not to buy that pattern though! 😂
