So love your videos, as a beginner sewist myself, it's so inspiring having followed your journey from the start! I really can sympathize with your wrist injury. A few months ago I broke my foot, it was called a minor fracture, and it was. BUT, I was so surprised by how much it affected my daily life and I really appreciate (although granted, superficially) the challenges folks with disabilities face when even just going for a walk or shopping. I couldn't play the piano as it was in our downstairs area, and really missed it. I can imaging how much you miss sewing. I hope you get better very soon!

I'm glad you've been enjoying my videos and I hope you're enjoying sewing! I'm so sorry to hear about your broken foot and I hope you have healed now or are well on the way to recovery. You hit the nail on the head - you don't appreciate how much an injury like that can effect your daily life until it happens to you. When I realised I couldn't open a bottle of wine on my own I knew I was really in trouble!! :P

Nice to see you Lizzie! No matter what you do on the inside, I would add a zip to the dress so that you can get it on and off without any tension on those seams. I think you're right that it going over your head may be the point of stress. Get well soon!

I can’t believe it’s been 4 weeks. It’s so painful. Hope you are getting better faster and faster as you go along. I love vintage sewing patterns and would love a video on your grandmothers sewing basket!

Hi Lizzie, good to see you and sorry to hear about your wrist...sounds painful and frustrating too 😕. Wishing you a quick recovery 🙏. Sorry to hear about your fraying seams too... I have made the Loungewear Set top from that fabric and not had trouble yet but I haven't worn it much yet and it's a loose design anyway. I did use a finer needle in my machine...a size 70/10 I think...it might make a difference maybe. Hoping you'll be able to sew without trouble with your wrist soon and we can see your lovely makes again and would love to see your granny's sewing box 👍😁💖😘

Thank you for popping on even without a lot of sewing content! I think many of us become attached to our favorite sewing KZbinrs as virtual friends! I would love to see what was in your Nanny's sewing basket! I'm so sorry about your arm! My daughter has that condition. Sadly, when it's not flaring up she is limited to how much she can use her arm and hand before it becomes painful again. You may have to be strategic from here on out! I've seen that "laddering" before. Good description for it! I don't know much about it though. I think in future stay stitching would be crucial, if you didn't do that in this instance. Can't wait to hear what you learn about the issue and to see your makes! Thanks again for the bit of waffle! Enjoy your mini vacation!

I fully understand what you are going through. I had surgery where they repaired my carpel tunnel and thumb 5 weeks ago and have been in a cast. It is my right hand and I am right handed. The worst part is that it is cast so that my thumb and fingers can’t meet so I can’t grasp anything😡 So I haven’t been able to sew or anything else with it. Thankfully I have only 1 more week In the cast then physical therapy for 8 weeks. I will be praying for your wrist to heal quickly.
@LizzieB4 жыл бұрын
Oh Donna you poor thing! Being in a cast like that sounds so uncomfortable! I'm sorry that you also haven't been able to sew and I hope your physical therapy goes really well so that you'll be back to sewing as soon as possible. X

So sorry to hear about your wrist! I’d love to see what’s in your Nannie’s sewing box when you’re able to make the video. Also, it’s frustrating when a project goes wrong, but it’s also a useful learning so please share when you know what happened to the fabric. Take care!

Oooh, feel so sorry for you ❤️ It’s one of my nightmares to not be able to sew anymore... 😱 Thinking of reumatism and other disabeling disorders.... 😔 Weird that the fabric you mentioned behaved so strange, wonder if your needle caused it... Have you tested with another needle on some scraps? Maybe it was blunt? Or the wrong kind? Hope you get well soon and by the way, you and your backdrop look stunning today!
@LizzieB4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your lovely comment Eva. I did use a fine needle but maybe it wasn't very sharp... I need to experiment!

The same thing happened to be with a top I just made. I have only tried it on and noticed the fraying at one seam just as you have noticed. Luckily I made the top from an extra large scarf I found at a thrift store for $4. I can't imagine how I would feel if it was expensive fabric! I just checked with my daughter, she has a mending book from the 1940's called The Make Do And Mendes booklet. She also has a couple of books from a series called Natalie Chanin's Alabama Chanin that have hand sewing and mending in them. I don't know if any of those are available in the UK but there might be something similar. Good luck with the mending and I hope you are back to sewing very soon.

Hi Lizzie - sorry you have a bad wrist - too much working at home on laptops! I really enjoy your sewing makes and your videos - given me great tips!! would love to see a "tour of the sewing box". Sorry to hear about your arm and I can imagine how much you miss sewing. After I had a stroke last August it was the first thing I thought and was determined to get my hand and arm working properly again in order to sew. After doing lots of fine motor skills and practise my arm and hand began to work properly again. (You have to make new pathways in the brain). I do hope your RSI improves soon. It would be lovely to see your Grannies sewing box btw. I’ve been making masks recently and want to go back to something more fun. I’m still tempted to refashion my Cocoon dress as you have. 🤗

Sorry to hear about your wrist! :( Hope it heals up soon. I wonder if going with a smaller needle size (and potentially something sharper like a Microtex needle) could have prevented the seam from pulling apart like that. Sometimes a needle that is too large punches holes and weakens the fabric at the seam line.
@LizzieB4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Stephanie! I suspect you may be right about the needle. I used a fine one but maybe it wasn't very sharp... woops!

Hope your wrist gets better quickly but it was nice to see a chatty video. I'd love to see the sewing box too. Maybe it's the fabric that's faulty rather than anything you've done to it to make it fray.

It took me 6 months after an injury to slowly getting back to sewing. I'm now at 8 months later and still have to take breaks to rest my arm,shoulder and hand. Oh please do show your Grandmother's sewing box. I was given my husband's grandmother's sewing box made by his grandfather and will pass it on to one of my granddaughters. I was recently given a sewing box from a friend's mother because no one in her family wanted it. Well for a sewist, there were lots of treasures.

Just a thought. It might be way off but would fabric like that be better using a French seam to give it more stability along the seam. I don’t even know if that’s possible with your design though.. 🤔

Lizzie. I thought I had seen something about the fraying so I checked. On SewmeSunshine website she says the following.....Due to the soft loose weave nature of these Linen Blend with TENCEL™ fibres fabrics it is advisable to double stitch your seams or use French seams in order to prevent seams from pulling apart or fraying............so she must know something about this. Why not check with her?

I hope you get to your machine soon. Quilter Pat Sloan is similar to you with two broken arms/wrists, watching you both makes one think how I would do in a similar situation. Would love to see your grannies seeing box. I love finding treasures in old sewing boxes in thrift stores. So about your fabric, I had a linen dress I needed to interface the seams and double seam to prevent shredding at seams, despite the cut being loose. You can also try some of the tips here: blog.treasurie.com/how-to-keep-fabric-from-fraying/

Hope everything works out with your hand. As for the sheer on your outfit, I believe you may have to see it a little more loose so that that doesn't happen. Certain materials out there that isn't for form fitting clothes. Hope that helps my dear and enjoy your vaca also hope to see you back and functional soon. Much love 💕💕💕💕💕👌👌

Sorry to hear about your RSI. I’m a physio in southwest London and treat quite a lot of that. I hope you have been given some good advice. Has anyone done a workstation assessment for you as it may well be related to your desk/chair/computer and mouse set up. Often made worse if you over extend your wrists using the mouse of keyboard. If i can help with any advice just let me know. Diana

Ouchy hope your wrist is better soon. Possibly a needle issue with the fabric, try a microtex needle size 70 or 80.
