Sewing Room Remodel & Makeover! // Creating the Perfect Crafting Space (in my bedroom)

After 3 years abroad, I return and convert my bedroom into a sewing & crafting space that is both neat/functional as well as cute and aesthetic!
I wanted to find a place for all of my sewing notions, sewing machines, scissors, all the crafting supplies I own, while still being confined to a very limited space, so creative storage solutions were a Must! On top of all of that, I wanted it to look cute on camera, so that added an extra level of renovation and decorating to the mix.
Of course it's still not done, but it's certainly much improved over what it was as the start! If you want to see even more details on the room and the process, consider becoming a monthly supporter over on Ko-Fi, there you'll have access to monthly vlogs as well as the extended edition of this video!

As a quilter, I envy you for that gorgeous sewing table you made yourself. It’s how I discovered you. I was looking for sewing tables and your video making that table poped up. If I had a daughter instead of a son, I would have wanted to be just like you 🥰 I bet your mom is very proud of you. 🤗

I love your scavenger remake of the birch shelves, that gorgeous purple accent wall and the wine bottle light. And of course your pup in the background. I recently won a new Black and Decker steam iron at Bingo. Priced ironing boards 50.00 to 200.00. Have decided to redo a solid wood chest for sewing storage and make a removable ironing board top. That way I can sit down and iron and use as a cutting surface too. You are inspiring to these old bones. Thanks

Hello from Ottawa, you lucky Montrealer, you. The curbside pick-ups are legendary in that city, especially on the moving insanity that is Canada Day. Well done. Your space is absolutely beautiful. I'm looking forward to your tour of the worktable functionality. You're living the dream - no more floor troll. You could always do a room tour after you've settled in for a while... Everybody does things differently for organization. Your solutions look amazing. In our small, vintage 1969 one bedroom my sewing shares space in the living room, so the open storage has to blend in and has to be movable. My hack is one of those metal Ikea drawer units, mounted on 360 wheels, to hold the sewing machine. The top drawer pulls out to hold a cutting board to provide the left-hand work surface to the machine. The drawers hold various haberdashery like tools and trim. I've yet to figure out how to manage the mid-project explosion. I start organized and then slowly(?) descend into chaos. _Small hint_ - as far as I can tell, the only real upside to being an adult is you are allowed to cut the tags off of things. Your pups' chew toy is adorable. As is your pup. Also? If you have the space left, maybe think about a comfy chair (foldable or permanent) for some hand-sewing/reading space? - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Жыл бұрын
Yes, we do have some good curbside finds, and I make it a point to schedule NOTHING on July 1st (when I'm in town) other than going around and picking up sidewalk goodies! Although I have to say, I've found amazing treasures in pretty much every city I've ever lived in, so cultivating an eye for it might also have something to do with it! I probably will do a studio tour in a few months, maybe as a video to release while on contract, where sewing things is less of an option. But first I'll settle in a bit! I am thrilled to, for literally the first time in my life, NOT have to manage the mid-project explosion (for the most part, at least)... it's quite the treat. And I don't dare to cut the tag off of Cannelle's sausage dog! She'd be horrified, she specifically prefers to pick him up by the tag, to get a better shake. And yes, as much as I'd love a comfy chair, that is distinctly not an option - I was even debating if I had room to keep that lovely antique sewing table that my machine is currently sitting on, because it is JAM PACKED in here 😭😭 That'll have to wait for a larger space, and for now, I'll sew on the couch in the living room!
@stevezytveld6585
@stevezytveld6585 Жыл бұрын
@@ShannonMakes (laughing) I was wondering if she would prefer shaking the dog-o by the tags. It would be like giving a 2 yr old a box for Christmas. The idea of having a room tour in reserve for when you're off on contract is brilliant. The same is true for the stitching how-to's (with the added benefit that those get watched multiple times while you're building up your viewership base). You could even do a 'day in the life' vlog about performance life... Ottawa's pretty good for the curbside game, but not as good as when the blue-haired Grannies still lived in Centretown... Agreed, it's all about keeping and honing your eye to what you need. And I've been known to go for walks with a screwdriver set... You must be able to furnish an entire apartment from the Can Day pickings. Pizza for everyone and everyone for pizza. Have a Swarts' smoke meat for me... I wonder if anyone, anywhere has figured out the mid-project explosion management?
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Жыл бұрын
I don't know how many people on the general channel would like a "day in the life" type vlog, that's more the stuff I save for my Ko-Fi members since they're a bit more interested in various aspects of my life (or at least more tolerant of me sharing it if it's a bit off-topic), but I'll marinate on that one. It might save me in a pinch! And yes, I absolutely have a standard kit that I bring in my backpack with me on walks - I actually go over it briefly in my "Sewing Table Curbside Scavenging" video from a couple weeks ago!! Screwdrivers, allen key set (for all those IKEA finds) and often a needle-nose pliers are in my Must-Haves for scavenging!! (and, umm, in fact 90% of our apartment, perhaps more, IS furnished from the curb 😬😬)
@stevezytveld6585
@stevezytveld6585 Жыл бұрын
@@ShannonMakes I'll have to go back to that video to compare note and pick up a few tricks. ;) And, hey, thrift proud, Darlin'. The only thing in our home that's not second hand or curb are a few bookcases. The older furniture is just made better (and, Gen X tip, wooden furniture is going for ridiculously cheep right now... Kijiji is my best friend for furniture and the movers that advertise on the site have decent prices for cross-town deliveries). Don't underestimate the audience. If you needed a through-line that's sewing related you could go from costume design to performance? What you're doing for your job is absolutely unique. It also plays out for a nice excuse to (eventually, when you're up for it & if they're open to it) going into the costume shop for Cirque? This as your first vlog was great. Get more personally comfortable with the format and you're golden.

I enjoy watching people do home renovations even though I’m very bad about actually doing anything with my own space 😅. Even with the conceptual idea that I’ll be where I’m at for a few years, my brain is still convinced moving again is imminent and why bother. By the time I summon the motivation it will actually be likely time to move 😂. Anywho, your creativity is inspiring. It makes me wish these walls were up to shelves (alas they are demonstrably not) . But the impetus to turn my room into a sewing room with a bed is strong. Thank you for sharing

Oh, see I'm the opposite, even if I'm somewhere just for a few months, I bring all the things to make it from a house into a home. Command strips and twinkle lights are my best friend!! In lieu of shelves, I can recommend ladder shelves (not the one that are actually just ladders, but the units that are self-standing shelves in decreasing height that only lean up against the wall). We built on in our living room (from recycled wood from the streets, of course, but that part's optional) and it's AMAZING!! And we don't want to put anything into that wall because it's got brick behind it, so this is the perfect solution!

This is a workaround that will look even better. Thank you.

Ohh yes, can HIGHLY recommend the Spoonflower solution. I personally HATE the look of traditional pegboard - I really really dislike all the empty holes, so what I did was I temporarily hung the pegboard when it was uncovered, placed all my pegs on it, lived with it for about a week to make sure I was happy with the placement, and then when I covered the pegboard, I ONLY punched holes in it where I knew I wanted a peg, and that way, there aren't a million holes in it. But that's just me personally - even if you punch every single hole out, it'll still look better than normal pegboard, and far easier than a 4 hour drive to IKEA!

So the reason I ended up doing it was because my parents refused to keep renting it from the movie store at the frequency with which I requested it, so I had to take matters into my own hands XD But of course tapes only have 45 mins per side, so 90 mins total, and the Princess Bride is something like 93 mins run time, so in fact I know the entire movie by heart until "They rode to freedom. And as dawn arose...." and then the tape CUT OFF 😢😢 And the reason I know "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" by heart is because my friend and I printed off the script, assigned roles (yes, the whole movie divided between two of us), and memorized it so that we could recite the whole movie between the two of us.... #coolestkidsinschool #Iwasthecoconuts

What a tragic cliffhanger you made for yourself!!! 😂 That AND not having the song Storybook Love?! 😢 And how fortunate you were to have such a friend to reenact MP&tHG!!! The Constitutional Peasant is one of my favorites, but we also can’t forget that the Black Knight always triumphs!!! 😊

Probably not the comment you were expecting, but..."Everything hurts and I'm dying" is my life and I need one of those shirts 🤩🤣 What a great idea to hang your paper patterns like that!!! Borrowing that practice post haste.

It's true, I was absolutely NOT expecting that, lol, but I'm glad you enjoy it XD The pattern hooks were purchased off Facebook for a steal, from a costumer for the MTL opera who is downsizing, and besides saving a ton of $$, I also got to meet another cool sewist!!

Love it!!! I'm getting a new studio space soon and I'm chomping at the bit to design the space, but I don't know any dimensions yet 😅 Also! Princess Bride! My favorite book (& movie), even though my copy of the book says "A Hot Fairy Tale" on the front, and I used to tape over that part of the cover in high school 😅

ooh, designing new spaces is always so fun... especially if you can do it without simultaneously living in it! And yes, Princess Bride :-D I had recorded the VHS onto audio tape, a sort of DIY audio-book, and I listened to it on repeat over and over, and I now know the entire thing (aurally, anyways) by heart :-D You must have missed the fabric warehouse/haul video where I mentioned my "Dread Pirate Roberts but make it 1890s" cosplay, because for sure I'd have gotten a comment from you on that one too!!

I just finished watching your video on your sewing room makeover, you are very talented, and finding those ikea table top and shelves on the side walk was truely a blessing, and you really knew how to use those power tools, I was really impressed, keep up the good work.

What an amazing job you've done in transforming your room to what you need it to be. I'm in awe of your packing skills - I was stunned at how much you emptied out of that closet! The one thing I liked most in the transformed room (and there's so much to like) was the large container you've got to store your metre ruler in. I currently use a not very nice laundry basket to store mine (plus loom shuttles, reeds, and an inkle loom) in. I need to find something nicer, though I don't think I will choose something that could break simply because I tend to drop my tools in from a height and this would not end well.

Thank you! I think you're talking about that giant green glass jug thing?! That was another street find (all of the miscellaneous jugs/wine bottles I have around here are just collected over the years because they were huge or quirky, etc). I have a large wooden T-square ruler that's a bit too big for that jug, and it's hanging from a nail on the side of the IKEA apothecary desk, so that could be an option. Otherwise maybe frequent your local thrift stores with an eye out for creative (and unbreakable) solutions!!

What a great space! and how ingenious you are! My dream is to have a space for my crafting, which is mainly knitting and sewing was even more important but now I have no space for it at the moment...I really miss it a lot, even as an advanced beginner as I was...congrats!!

Thank you so much! If it's any consolation/encouragement, this is the first time in my life I've had a dedicated crafting area (and even then, it's shared with all the other things in my bedroom including wardrobe, etc)... and the first 2 years of doing KZbin and crafting, my only sewing/filming space was literally the communal living room, so working time was limited and everything had to be fully cleaned up and put away after every. single. crafting session 😭😭

It turned out beautiful! I'm really curious how you were able to keep the same apartment while being gone so long. Did you continue paying rent the whole time for the apartment as well as for the place you were living in over seas?
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Жыл бұрын
Thank you! That's a large part of the reason why we live with roommates - they make it more financially viable to keep an apartment while traveling, plus having someone always there makes sure it stays in good shape (i.e. they would catch a water leak right away, etc)
