This is the best tutorial I have seen. I have a 770QE Plus. You make it look so easy and the closeups are very helpful. Great instructions. Thank you so much and I will continue watching until I feel comfortable. I planned to stipple and was happy you said that was not the first one. ❤

Thank you for giving such a clear tutorial. I have an old 440QE and have tried the BSR with very little success. My stitch length was 2.00 and I tried to keep my movements as even as possible but my stitches varied from micro to at least 4.00 and even skipped some. Very frustrating!! I was very tempted to sell the BSR as I didn't think I would ever get the hang of it, but after watching this I'm going to try again. Wish me luck 😊

Thank you so very much for this absolutely fabulous video! I have been struggling to learn how to free motion quilt with my Bernina 770QE and BSR. I will practice tomorrow and hope to start quilting the huge quilt that I made during lockdown. I had hoped to use the embroidery module, but it is just too heavy. I was terrified of free motion quilting, but you've taken the fear away. Thanks Shelly for an amazing tutorial.

This is a very encouraging lesson- it’s all been so intimidating. Just a question- if I don’t use the foot pedal but start/stop button on 570qe what do I do differently? Only hands determine speed???
@SewShelly
@SewShelly 4 ай бұрын
The foot pedal and the start stop are power on switches only. Your hands moving the fabric is what caused the machine to stitch. If you start with the start stop button you can stop by pressing the button again or pressing the foot pedal.

Thank you for this straight forward informational tutorial. I’ve owned my Bernina since 2019 and had difficulties in working with the BSR. My question is, what pressure is your presser foot set to? It seems as if my presser foot sits so taut that I’m having difficulties moving my fabric. Note that I mostly do T-shirt quilts
@SewShelly
@SewShelly 2 жыл бұрын
The presser foot prssure can be anything you need for your project to move freely but still close enough to keep the fabric from flagging which is basically jumping up with the needle. There is not a perfect setting. Anything that works per project is the right one.

I just had a comment on FB that you don’t use the foot pedal AT ALL when using the BSR. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Do you suggest washing quilts before gifting them?
@SewShelly
@SewShelly 4 ай бұрын
BSR can be used with the foot pedal or the Start stop button. Try both and see what you like. Yes, I do wash my quilts before gifting them. The look changes so much after washing. I don't want the recipient surprised, I want to check for color bleeding and I prefer the look of a washed quilt unless it is an art quilt.

Thank you so very much! Question: What thickness of batting do you use on your quilts...I'm just starting out learning how to quilt.

I use all of the major brands of batting. I do like the 80/20 styles of batting for a lighter weight quilt. I also like wool batting. Try several types and see what you like.

It appears that I too have to support my acrylic insert with something to even the difference between my table and desk. What did you use which is shown as blue? Please let us now? I was considering gluing cork but taping something else might be neater to replace if compression occurs in future.

I used blue painters tape. I cut thru sections to the thickness needed with a box cutter. They have stayed in place for 10 years so other than being able to see them there is not a downside.

Shelly, I’ve heard some information on BSR compatible attachments for ruler work. Can you give us an update on these attachments, how they are attached, how to use them, and if they are worth the cost. Thanks. Kathy Howard
@SewShelly
@SewShelly 2 жыл бұрын
Kathy, I have no experience with these and so cannot share any first hand experience. They are not a BERNINA product. I see no reason for them not to work well. Of course you would not be able to use the ruler behind the BSR because of the way it is made but you would certainly learn to compensate . Give them a try and you might be amazed.

I’m wondering what is on the glove and it might be the dye from the fabric. I prefer to wash fabric when I can as I’m a bit allergic to whatever chemicals they use to treat it.

Which bobbin case do you use? Black or yellow?
@SewShelly
@SewShelly Жыл бұрын
This video was filmed on an 880 Plus which does not use different bobbin cases. On a 4,5, or 7 series that does you would change from the black to the yellow depending on your thread, fabric and stitching style. It would be decided when making your sample and setting up to get ready.

What machine are you using? Either your top tension is way to tight and needs to be lowered or your bobbin tension is too loose and needs to be threaded for embroidery.

You do not have to have the slider although it really does help the fabric move smoothly. Quilting gloves or something to help hold the quilt is something I feel id really necessary for success.

I hear you saying “kick back on the heel“ but I don’t know what you mean. Can you explain please?
@SewShelly
@SewShelly 11 ай бұрын
The BERNINA foot pedal has two functions. You place your foot entirely on the pedal and when you press down on the back of the pedal, where your heel is you get whatever funtion the heel kick has been programmed to perform. The most common is to raise and lower the needle but with more modern BERNINA models that is programable to perform other functions. The front of the pedal, where your toe is, is how you power the machine, stitching slow and fast depending on how hard you depress the pedal. When using the BSR the front, or toe area is only used as a powersource so you put your foot all the way down. The stitch is then formed by you moving the fabric with your hands. When you want to stop, power off by raising your front toe off of the pedal. When using the BSR I think of the power to the foot pedal as a light switch. Pedal down power on, pedal off power off.
@deidrapowell8762

Also did you move the speed all the way to left?(slow)
@SewShelly
@SewShelly Жыл бұрын
Look at the video at 6:45 to change the stitch length. The motor speed changes with the length of the stitch setting. Then the speed of your hand movements determines the speed you are sewing. The speed slide control has nothing to do with it at all.
