This bag still has not been topped by another other bag for grocerys......fantastic baby bag as well as over night bag for the teens,,,,,,Beach bag........it is up and above all other grocery backs, holds gallons of milk and the dividers allows for bread or boxs in one divided area, another area for freah veggies..........yes, it takes a lot of fabric,,,,,but done like the tutorials instructs, making sure all seams are strong.....so that washing is not a problem, this bag will last and be a favorite for any family

I have made this bag. I also had trouble with the Pellon not sticking to the fabric. Your tips are appreciated for stitching it a few times. I prefer a foam that I can quilt in place; its not heavy and keeps the bag in shape. This bag is a great size for the pool!

Thank you for a very good tutorial. I’ve just completed my first bag of many I hope. I made it from a blackout blind which someone no longer needed. It didn’t need Pellon as the material was thick enough and my sewing machine coped with the layers. I will be happy to wipe it clean after grocery shopping use as needed. Hoping to make one to keep some of my sewing supplies in to transport to and from class. Thanks once again!

Thank you Andrea, for this bag tutorial. I made this bag out of light camouflage (waterproof) fabric and added wide tabs on each side that slide onto wheelchair handles for my daughter's WWII Veteran grandpa who just turned 96 years old (and is doing well). He is in the Veterans Home and this bag makes it easy for his son to carry and bring items to and fro when he visits and it keeps everything sorted and at hand. When the bag hangs on the wheelchair, a large vinyl graphic saying, "This Is What The World's Greatest Grandpa Looks Like" can be seen. Thanks again for a great bag.

My girl sent me this video link, I’ve been searching high and low for a reusable grocery bag & this is what I wanted all along!! Absolutely perfect! My only complaint, as a newbie, I would’ve liked her to have included how to do the notching. I’ve never done it, as a visual learner it would’ve helped me immensely. Great bag pattern, exactly what I wanted, can’t wait to make some.

Denise Hosner , I like this bag a lot too. However I am slightly confused and I think maybe you can unconfuse me since your comment touched on it........ the bottoms of the inside areas are not sewn down, so they are merely dividers only, not pockets, am I understanding that correctly? How are these adjustable since they are sewn down in the middle of each? I’m obviously confused, lol 😂
@54gravi6 жыл бұрын
Laura Pierce You are correct. The compartments are Not sewn to the bottom of the bag. It will work for me. For you, too?

Andrea, I love the bag and have made several. The only problem I had when I made the first one was the 4 inch square was not coming together at the bottom corner edges. You have to add the seam allowance into the measurement to get a perfect square, that will make the bottom seams come together perfectly. Otherwise a great tutorial. Using nylon webbing is another shortcut for the straps.
@Sewspire5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing Pam! I love the idea of using the webbing for the handles too!
@ravenscache4715 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem so I sewed the bottom the same seam allowance as the sides so the square was perfect. Also learned I could cut it in half at the bottom which made it easier for me cut my fabric on a small mat. I also top stitched the inserts top and bottom to prevent bunching after washing etc.

This is a WONDERFUL tutorial............the best I have seen for my needs......we do not have plastic any longer in our town......you have to buy a paper bag if you do not have your own........bags are being mass produced for the needs of the community from other countries......BUT this will be the prefect gift for any occasion now..........thank you thank you.........Now if it did not cost $30 to make one it would be a great product for craft shows.........but we cannot have everything...........thank you again.........FYI......with this change in bagging we will have a lot more food poisoning d/t the foods of course and they do not get thrown out now SO THEY NEED TO BE WASHED ONCE A WEEK IF YOUR USING THEM Regularly and this bag looks like it will hold up to the test.........................PS.....this is the prefect time to use inexpensive fabrics (unlike when we quilt)..............and I love your instruction method.........no over talking, your direct and to the point....thank you

I make a lot of these sorts of things with denim from used jeans for the exterior. It can be pieced to make a bigger section or add in a decorative strip of colorful fabric between 2 pieces of denim . Or check thrift stores and tag sales for fabric or upholstery pieces.

Love you're bag! Will make one this week. Might I make a suggestion regarding the handles.. Once the interfacing is attached to the bag, open the piece out again and allign webbing from one end to the other looping around and along other side. Stitch each side seperately leaving the inch space at top for turning. Much stronger.
@mathsiecat6 жыл бұрын
Linda S , I don’t quite follow you. Do you simply mean fold the handle cloth piece with interfacing attached in half, wrong side facing out, sew one short and the long side, invert to the correct side, sew the open end shut and then place and affix? Or something more that I’m missing?
@lindas76666 жыл бұрын
mathsiecat once she has bag opened out, starting from bottom of bag, right side up, attach webbing to bottom along one side (follow her stitching that is securing interfacing) , up past top to form one handle, then come down along other side again following her stitching across bottom and back up to form handle then back down to meet beginning of webbing on first side. This makes for less likely of handles failing because they now encompass entire bag. Sorry for so long explaination, but I hope this helps!
@mathsiecat6 жыл бұрын
Linda S yes, thank you, much clearer now! Do you need to cut the handles longer if you were to do it this way?
@lindas76666 жыл бұрын
mathsiecat my handles measures 28 in each Loop. Nothing is cut,this is a solid one piece of webbing all around bag.

Hi Andrea, I thought I would let you know I have made three of these so far. I used duck canvas for the outside of two of them and oil waxed canvas for the third. I love, love, love the way they turned out but I don't think I'll use canvas anymore. It's so heavy and bulky to work with in my small sewing space. The next ones I make I'll try the home dec fabric for the outside. I also left the divider out of one of the bags and I really like the way it turned out. This is a great pattern. Thanks for sharing. Happy Holidays!! P.S. I also added a snap to the top of the bag for 'just in case.' Sometimes I use it and sometimes I don't. :o)

Just an absolutely amazing idea and tutorial and teaching style altogether in this video!! Thank you so much for sharing! I've been searching youtube videos for large totes that I can take shopping since the area we live now(traveling for work) charges you for bags.. even when we get back home, I still plan to use all my reusable bags(even if theyre not charging for bags by the time we get back home, theyre just so much better to use than plastic!!) If i may, a tip I saw on another video.. you know how you iron the top down an inch after sewing up the sides and bottom? If you iron the top flap(1 inch) before sewing up the sides, you'll have a nice crease there after you sew to make it easier to turn over the 1 inch flap more accurately 🙂 thanks so much for sharing this tutorial with us.. I especially love the use of divider section in this bag!!

Ooh, I love how you made the pockets, handles with the pellon, padded base and a huge bag. I was thinking it could have other uses, such as baby bag, a friend of mine has a donkey and wants a large bag to keep "donkey stuff" organized. Thank you.

So glad you like the project and I am sure your friend and her donkey will be thrilled with the bag you make! If possible, I'd love to see a picture of her fully loaded donkey bag. That would be a Sewspire first for sure!

She wants fabric that has donkeys on it. . . that might take a while to find.

Wanda Smart you could use Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh or donkey from Shriek (would be so cute)

Andrea, I found this tutorial a couple of days ago. Yesterday I finished the first bag, and love how it turned out so much I am making a second bag. I am using a directional print, so I cut two pieces rather than a 24 by 40 inch piece. Should I sew the two pieces together at the bottom first, or cut the 4 inch squares out first? I’m probably overthinking this as I often do. Thank you for another great tutorial!!

👋You can cut the squares out first. And then sew them together at the base. 👍

The bag turned out great! Next I would love to try one this size with a zipper closure so it can be my carry on bag on my next trip!
