I've been in love with the Marie Antoinette movie since it came out in 2007, but only recently have I started recreating this whole outfit, due to the availability of this beautifully woven Strawberry fabric. It's the whole look that inpsires me, so today I will focus on making the embroidered bright red mitts from the movie, as well as the tiny pink hat.

So, back in the dark ages (seriously, we are talking 40+ years ago) when I made costumes for the Gilbert&Sullivan operettas I used to be in I had to make about 10-ish small hats in various styles all similar to yours; I used buckram hat forms. Some I got from a wedding supply place and the others from a costume supply. I would discourage the use straw if you are covering with fabric as it’s difficult to work with and is visible through the fabric. I did use straw for a couple of the hats (mine was one, as a matter of fact) but the straw was integral to the style. The buckram is more cost effective and easier to work with. 🙂 ~Leigh

So recently I figured out that I could use some stones that I had been using as paper weights for ironing as well. They work well to press down seams ahead of the iron and I get to keep my hands away from the boiling steam. My stones are ovals about the size of a palm. They also double as weights for patten cutting as well.

1) bergère = berˈZHer = shepherdess. 2) morphine the name came later, but morphine the substance could be found in the 18th century (and before) in the form of laudanum and of course just plain opium. 3) so much respect for the lengths that you go to to research your patterns and to obtain materials and the way that you make the concentrated efforts of weeks and months seem achievable.
@Sewstine
@Sewstine 3 жыл бұрын
If you’d like to get technical, opium is the substance derived from the opium poppy that hasn’t been purified and morphine is the active ingredient. Morphine can be extracted from opium but the two are not strictly equivalent. Opium has been known to have some analgesic properties from I believe Byzantium times but the extracted morphine itself was not sold as an analgesic until the early 19th century. Also, thank you!
