Theres another video out there that suggests using an ordinary mat on to of a metal surface and magnets atop the ruler or pattern. For garment sewing, cutting large pieces, she covered her worktable permanently in metal sheeting!

I've heard of this method, I personally have never tried that but sounds clever and an affordable way to try and mimic this concept. I'd say the magnets in the ruler are still the most clever part of their system.

I really like the improvement over the traditional mat but will definitely need to save up for it.😢 We live a modest lifestyle as well and like you, splurge on my sewing goods. Thank you for sharing this wonderful tool!🥰

Thanks for the in-depth review. For serious sewing, this is a worthwhile investment. I appreciate that the cutting mat is marked on both sides. A light color on one side + a dark color on the other side is a great idea. Regardless of whether my fabric is sheer or opaque, a light color or dark, this mat is the answer.

Just started using mine. I really like how legible the markings are. And the beveled edge is really nice. As you mentioned, the level of magnetic pull is just right - you can adjust to straighten up the fabric or the ruler pretty easily, but then it holds tight when you cut. Already easier on my shoulder!

I have one now love it l able to cut with pattern pieces and the fabric didn't move I didn't realize that I move mat around and nothing move I put my magnet in plastic tube for storage thank you for demonstration of this amazing cutting mat

Nice mat, and lots if options tonuse your own magnets... But can't help but hope you use wrist wraps--neoprene-- or "arthritis" gloves when not filming--these can really help by adding warmth & light support & not as bulky as the full braces for carpal tunnel (though at times i need those too)... Also I use an "ergonomic" style rotary cutter handle (by Martelli), and less stress/fatigue than straight style!

There are many things I've tried, like you, the gloves have never worked for me and the Martelli cutter and I didn't get along (this old dog refused to learn) that's why this system was a good match for me. Been using it exclusively since this video and love it more each time I use it. Can't wait for them to come out with a shorter ruler. I’m sorry to hear about your pain. You might write to the SewTItes company and ask if they are aware of a local shop to you that will be selling it and ask for an in person demo. Sometimes my hands hurt so bad that cutting is painful and frustrating and I make mistakes. This just might be a helpful solution for you.

Going to save up for the set. I absolutely love how the magnets hold the fabric (or many layers of fabric) in place! It’s a MUST HAVE in my sewing room!!

My husband gifted me the left handed set for Christmas after we watched your video. I really like it. The beveled edge on the ruler helps so much and not having to use my exercise weights is a blessing. It's pricy but great tools are worth it.

Yes, when I first saw it, I thought the same thing. They certainly went a few extra steps with the magnets in the rulers and for sure the SewTites team knows magnets. I wonder if eventually they will sell the ruler(s) separately then you could potentially use with your DIYStyle mat system. I have put a request in for a smaller ruler and they say they already have plans for more pieces to the collection.

About boosters and fabric thickness: isnt it to enable the magnets to pull even THROUGH the bulk? Surely the magnets and boosters don't need to be off the edge of the fabric, as you're showing otherwise why have such a eide ruler? Also, one often uses the markings on the MAT to align the ruler for straightening the edge of the yardsge or cutting squares or rectangles. The whole ruler is likely to be on top of the fabric.

First I will address the boosters: Now having used this for several months, I am still using it the same way, boosters are designed to pull more strength through the built in magnets but that is not always able to be the case, so yes, still placing them ON the ruler but not on the built in magnet works good but to your point, not as good if they were on the built in magnets. Second, you are right, alight the fabric with the lines and ruler, etc. but honestly, I don't always do that. I demonstrate exactly as I use something and good or bad, I cut on an angle most of the time :)

It is nice. I'd say this is a "treat yo self" item. Around $300-350 depending on shipping and if you use the coupon code. But for me, the ability to use my hands more efficiently and not cause pain is worth it. But it is one of those "add to wish list items" I'm glad I did make the investment thought.

Watch again and listen to what I’m saying. It’s because I’ve got to cut straight (because of my hands) I’m not able to rotate my wrist so I rotate the mat instead. Usually mats are slippery and this one is heavy and it stays in place while I turn.

You make it look like the boosters must be on top of the magnets in the ruler itself. You don't show those spots as being along the edges of the ruler, so I assume they aren't. It must be that the boosters enable one to use the ruler even when those center line dots are over fabric. In other words, the boosters are always on the middle of the ruler, but the ruler can be anywhere.

I was suggesting a possible place “to store” the magnets when not using them on the ruler. I have a magnetic mat and leave the magnets on the far edge of the mat, rather than putting them in a container at the side of the mat. It’s just what has worked for me. 😀
