Excellent video yet again. Thank you. I could have sworn that the strip club they played in was called El Paradiso and not Paradise. But you pulled up the old picture. Oh to be at those early gigs. We need a time machine. I would definitely go back. Nostalgia is such a pain. I've been reading a few Melody Maker magazines from back in the day and it seems to me the Pistols only got real famous on the World Stage AFTER they broke up. Even 1977 Melody Makers have very little coverage of the band. They have a couple of front pagers but not enough. Sex Pistols were game changers, a myth and instigators of changing minds and culture. They were the only band that mattered if you look back on it. Yes Bernie Rhodes and Malcolm had a vision, but the band themselves tried and nailed it. There is no better album than Never Mind the Bollocks. Every song is perfect and still stands up even more so today.
@WhyNotGoPlaces3 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching Richard! Wow, you said it perfectly. They were the only band that mattered. I have old NMEs and I noticed the same thing. They got some coverage, but not much. Someone like Paul McCartney or Bob Dylan got much more. I thought it was the El Paradiso too, but I think the confusion is that they did play a place with that name, but it was in Europe somewhere - maybe Amsterdam. Not many sex places left in Soho. I remember walking Soho in 1978-1980 and it was full of them. Thanks again!
@GriefTourist3 ай бұрын
Melody Maker hated them. It was aimed at lovers of dinosaur bands and mainstream rock. Sounds was probably the most pro punk. NME was somewhere in between.

Love it. Times I asked my sister Chrissy which venue she saw The Pistols and she always says, “Could’ve been Roxy, Nashville, 100 club, Ronnie Scotts, can’t remember exactly..” she reckons the more I’ve asked the more she can’t remember..I wish I was the first one born, not fair..😎 On another note, my dad was a Teddy Boy and he used to frequent the clubs n coffee bars around soho late 50s. 3 of us have haunted the place at different stages n times. Met great people, saw great bands. Cherished for forever. Love from North London ❤️

Thanks for watching! How can your sister not remember what venue? (They didn't play at the Roxy or Ronnie Scotts). I think the most frequent place they played was the 100 Club. I'll include that in my next video. Your dad must have gone to Bar Italia. I love that place - popular with the Mods and Teds - and went there a couple of times on my recent visit. Soho is still wonderful. Not the same, but I still love it.

Great video - i have been to that cinema on Leicester Square a few times in the past and never realised the pistols had played those famous gigs just next door. Soho needs more blue plaques for punk rock locations to bring awareness. I had no idea the cambridge was an old sex pistols venue, yet i have been in there several times. I used to work in shaftesbury ave for an I.T company back in early 2000's. I have been in the Roxy in 2013 when it was a shop that sold swimwear lol. I was in there with a friend who was at gigs in the Roxy in 1977, and he showed me where the stage used to be downstairs, next to the shop tills. The thing that struck me was how small the shop was! It was hard to believe it hosted all those early punk gigs with so many famous bands from back in the day. Soho and covent garden were very different atmosphere back in the late 70s, before gentrification. Keep these great videos coming maggie. Ps - the three kings ( previously called the Nashville back in the 70s), in west kennsington is a good venue to visit. I used to watch sport events in it in the early 2000s. Some famous punk gigs in there, pistols etc. Also Freddie Mercury house was just round corner. Link to 3 kings below. Also hammersmith has quite a few famous locations. www.reddit.com/r/britpics/comments/ltmx4a/the_famous_three_kings_pub_in_west_kensington/ Also check out this video for its band history. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZyyZmewmr2Fi7ssi=9i7eYu30m8fC7ucN

Thanks for watching and thanks for the info! I should have gone inside the cafe that is now where the Roxy is located, but maybe it was closed. Yes, I have read that downstairs was small and that's where the bands played. So historic! I've never been to the old Nashville location. Maybe I'll go there next time. Joy Division also had an early gig there. That plaque where the Roxy was located doesn't look like an official London plaque btw. Not sure how those things are decided, but yes I mention it several times in various videos ..."why isn't there a plaque here?" I probably repeat that a little too much. Thanks for the links. I'll check them out!

When I went on it, I already knew the Sex Pistols places he visits (Denmark St., 100 Club etc) but he also has other stops, like an area in Chinatown they used to have record stalls like RockOn Records. He's old enough to have gone to The Roxy in 1977 so it's a good tour. I have The Vortex in my part 2. No, I don't think the SP played there either, but I think Siouxsie did.

Glad you included the Cambridge. Not strictly Soho as it's in Cambridge Circus. It's one of the few pubs that hasn't been ruined by gentrification. Sadly Soho is not what it was, not because I'm a dirty old man in a mac, but through the elimination of so much of the area's more interesting pubs and cafes. If you want a good pint in a decent pub, try the Old Coffee House on Beak Street. They still occasionally play the Pistols. And thanks for another great video. All the best from London town.
@WhyNotGoPlaces3 ай бұрын
Thank you for commenting and enjoying the video! Soho has changed so much. I remember walking around there in the late 70's - lots of strip clubs, dirty video places, women upstairs with a sign saying "model available." Those were the days! There's still a couple of video places left and that's it. The same thing happened to 42nd street in NYC except that gentrification is actually worse because it's full of bland chain stores now. I may have walked into the Old Coffee House. That sounds familiar. I did walk into a pub near Carnaby Street that had lots of old rock photos on the walls. Even though Soho is a shadow of its former self, I still love it. I had a coffee at Bar Italia a couple of times on my trip. So glad that place is still hopping. Thanks again!
