Sexism In Video Games

Wanted this out for international women's day...Oh well, all you strong females out there, keep doing what you're doing.
I believe we're all equals, it's time we stop pushing these hateful ideas onto people, were all strong in our own ways, we're different, that's OK.

Shaming women who embrace their femininity or reveal their bodies is misogyny, fiction or not. I’m so sick of these journalist showing their dislike of women, while also trying to make themselves look like a feminist. If they actually listened to me and many other women who play games they would know there is a big amount of us who like to play as badass sexy women characters. Thank you for talking about this.

Let me preface that I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiments expressed in this video- those being that a woman's strengths do not have to lie in her ability to be more like a traditional man in order to be strong, and in saying so implies the masses of defining feminine women that games have been showcasing these past decades are somehow weak. That said, I'm a previously very libral woman so I have some perspective, and I like to play devils advocate. I think that the core of this problem initially stemmed from a place of reasonable wanting. From people who didn't match the traditional masculine, but more likely feminine, archetypes and who wanted representation in games. In the past games have boiled down male and female to masculine and feminine, which is not necessarily wrong being that it's true for the majority, but does leave out those abundant exception cases. Masculine females and feminine males were an entire character field that wasn't being made use of in story, and people who wanted to play as their idealized selves in games that had such ideals couldn't. I consider that to be relatively innocent- after all, every girl goes through a masculine phase. And sometimes you just personally think the men get cooler stuff (I will never forgive the Silverwind Nargacuga set in Monster Hunter Generations for being a bikini when the men's set maintained the normal super cool look. That said the normal nargacuga set in the game was pretty even between the sexes, so I can't complain too much about that franchises bikini armor- they provided options). However what the problem has become now is a complete erasure of the traits that I don't think define a woman as a woman (after all, femininity is not just a wig you can put on to claim you're a woman. Womanhood is deeper than that, and the whole reason why I have a problem with the trans community, but that's another can of worms), but that many women have been recently shamed for having. We've done a full swap from shaming women for engaging in masculine activity all the way from the time that working was a man thing, to ten years ago when we still had an outpouring of men who would berate any woman for touching a game (we still have those, but by now they've become the fringe, or just another suit of degeneracy to put on for FPS players- we all know they like to dress nicely in that manner). Into shaming women for more traditional hobbies and clothing, from makeup to the latest fashion trends, and even the drinks they like. But this isn't a problem I've found exclusive to the left- that shame comes from both sides. While the left is busy trying to appropriate womanhood itself for the sake of men who want unlimited access to women's medals and shelters, the right has always found a problem with young girls interests and found a way to dismiss them as stupid or lesser. For example, for a long period of time we'd criticize them for wearing a set of shoes. Seriously, shoes. Uggs, to be more specific. Now they're not for me, but the rampant hatred of these things was completely unreasonable. Just like the hatred of certain coffees and certain musicians. It's not that these things have no right to be criticized, it's that these things are often only criticized once they become associated with the passion of young girls. This breeds two types of girls- the ones who unabashedly pursue their interests (whether they actually like them or because it's a trend is up for debate) and the ones who try to appeal to the right and do what they perceive is going to net them points with that group. The "I'm not like other girls" kind of girl. And it's that second type of women that are perpetuating all this madness in recent years with games (and a great deal of other media) who insist on dismantling femininity in it's connection to female. Ultimately what I'm arguing is that you have this issue because of disillusioned young women who's real interests have been dismissed or classified as frivolous and stupid who are looking for approval in the wrong places, and who are destroying the spaces women have made to enjoy those interests regardless of approval. I'm not saying this is the fault of the right in a direct capacity- everyone has the personal responsibility to deal with their issues like adults, and reasses their beliefs often. What I am saying is that it certainly hasn't helped, and it's allowed the breeding environment that's made these kind of women we have so many problems with today. Basically, the idea of sexism in games stems from the rejection of traditional values, which once upon a time could've been reasonable to an extent, but which is now being done to an extreme by people driving for acceptance from a set of groups that will never truly give it. Sorry for this ramble, I just like arguing on the internet I suppose. Fantastic video, and again, I agree wholeheartedly.
