There are people who say that keeping people in jail may not always be the best way to change their behaviour. We pay taxes to keep ppl in jail, yet if statistics show them repeating their offenses, then maybe it's not the best punishment. Nowadays people look at counselling and rehab instead. If I'm not wrong, the NUS guy got counselling on top of his jail term? So maybe we should be looking at the quality of the counselling.

Our Singaporean laws are not as good as we think they are. "Potential to excel in life" molesting someone is very serious and he gets off with just two weeks? 3.5 months and termination won't fix the lifetime of trama the student will have. 4 counts of molestation and a doctor gets bail and still is allowed to work, thought doctors were suppost to help us.

There's this one case from the west that even the family and acquaintances of the rapist called the victim as something that happened to him. She was bullied and ridiculed online because she reported and he was indeed proven guilty. That was one of the most infuriating case I've ever heard.

I agree with nicole "0 tolerance my ass" ,, just because the molesters are rich they can hire a very professional lawyer and get away with molestation !? "0 tolerance" said the government. But justice is not served to the poor victims, so is that 0 tolerance ?? I really hope the government could see this video and impose stricter laws in the future.

I see that y'all have included AWARE (SACC) in the description. I would like to share my awful experience with SACC last year, in hope that victims will be more cautious when approaching SACC. When I reached rock bottom in my life, going through the toughest and most bitter period of my life, I approached SACC for help, hoping to get out of my pain and suicidal thoughts. But my experience with SACC accentuated the turmoil I was in. I was sexually assaulted and called SACC in hope of seeking some professional support /advice. The staff came off as inpatient, repeatedly interrupted me and I didn't get the chance to properly share my circumstances. So she made some assumptions and tried to advise me based on her assumptions. She then mentioned that sometimes perpetrators are only given verbal warnings by the police (especially if he's a first time offender, no records etc, amongst many other factors.) I did tell her about how I was angry and frustrated at the perpetrator, broken and scarred by what he has done and I'm struggling to put whatever happened behind me. She then acknowledged the harrowing experience I went through and immediately when on to say how scary it will be for the perpetrator to be interrogated by the police, suggesting that it's equal now because both of us have been through some form of 'terror'. I'm shocked beyond words. Till today, I can't believe the lady over the phone said those words. Shouldn't she be able to empathise with me?

Maybe Singapore isn't as safe as we thought 😖 if victims need to file a civil suit etc and it's not taken care of by the police.. imagine the victim is already traumatised.. and they still need to go through so many steps.

Growing up, my parents told me to keep my bag at the front to protect our belongings from being stolen. But now I really don’t know if it’s better to keep my bag in front or behind. If I keep my bag in front I can protect my stuff, but that means my ass is out there for men to grab. If i keep my bag at the back, my ass might be protected my belongings are not. I’ve never felt safe in a train, especially when standing, because of how crowded it is. Whenever a guy stands behind me, I always have to check and see his face just in case something happens.

Rapists and molesters caused lifetime trauma to human beings, this is very damaging. A few years of jail and few strokes of caning are insufficient. Like what you gal said, STRONG laws are needed to deter such actions. Let's try castration as a punishment for rapist and we should be able to see great effects.

Thank you for talking about this topic and using this channel as an voice for us women. Most of the topics discussed really resonates with me. I feel that women have very few avenues to voice out or fight for what we want. I work in an environment where it uses women as an icon in advertisements and marketing tools to perceive women as compassionate and submissive. Things happened in my workplace, and we are not allowed to share with the public. We were somewhat silenced. You mentioned about jail terms. The accused in my company was just being demoted. I really wish I can share more with the both of you. All I can say, I am surrendering to the fate of being born a woman. It’s a sad but hard truth.

Thank you Sylvia and Nina for speaking out about this topic, even with more cases being publicised nowadays (Monica Baey, NUS students lol) there's still so much that is swept under the carpet and we've internalised it in us that women are victims, that's just the way of life. For raising up the issue so plainly, clearly and coherently; using your platform to show solidarity with women in Singapore, thank you :)

My Lovely Princess Sylvia, sex offenders should be caned, when they are committing their sex crimes, these sex offenders are causing physical harm and emotional harm to their victims, in return they should get a physical kind of punishment which is caning and these sex offenders will think twice before they commit their sex crimes. Caning is a must as part of a jail sentence for sex offenders. 😈

I suddenly remembered about what an old teacher once told us. There was this one male teacher who would occasionally invite some students for a talk about grades or something. He knew them very well as their parents were great friends of the teacher. So he was very Familiar with these few students. It turned out he molested them and they didn't have to courage to speak up because he was good friends with their parents. I believe they even told their parents but it got brushed away or something because they thought they were dramatic. It kept on happening and how everyone found out was because this girl got pregnant with his child. Poor children didn't have anyone to turn to. It happened to be that multiple girls were impregnated by him. Since that all classroom have transparant glass in doors and half the wall is made of glass so that everyone can look inside.

Glad to see you two are having these conversations! For the doctor story, here in the US we have a sex offender registry where charged offenders must register with their picture, address and information. Anyone can search on this registry online. I wonder if Singapore has something like this? Though I think if someone were not charged here the same weird situation with him on bail could happen..

Any follow-up now that Dr Yeo Sow Nam has been acquitted and the woman has admitted to lying? Not guilty until proven so ya? Women nowadays hold a lot of power, even more so than men. "However, I am also disappointed that with her lies, the complainant has jeopardised the good, necessary, and difficult work of ensuring access to justice for real victims of sex crimes, many of whom already hesitate to accuse their attackers publicly," he said.

One of my co worker told me that she was molested by her brother before, her brother forced and inserted his finger into her XXXXXX, she reported it to the police and her brother did not go to jail as there was no evidence said that when her brother goes to NS they will make his life in NS difficult and best part her mother scolded her for reporting it to the police, I question Singapore's law and how they handle it sometimes, like what Dee kosh said in the pod cast "BLAST IT OUT then report"
@stevenpang1565

I think when you discuss the punishment dealt to the perpetrator, u need to dive down to the details on what charge is brought up and also the evidence presented to the judge by the prosecution lawyer. For example on the first case of the police officer, there might be insufficient evidence presented. The victim only brought up the incident after sometime, if there was no cctv footages it will be hard to show it to the judge the extend of the crime other than just the description from the victim. Also depending on how much ill intend (if the perpetrator has many past attempt, or has details planned to commit the crime), and how remorseful the perpetrator shows can also affect how the punishment is dealt. As much as we wish to sympathize the victim, it is hard for the judge to pin a harsher sentence if there is minimal evidence displaying the extend of the crime. Also let’s not forget in the jurisdiction system, is the prosecutor lawyer is not satisfied with the punishment, there is always an avenue of appeal. So the first judgement to common people might not be the most fair, it can always be appealed if a stronger argument is brought forward by the prosecution lawyer.

Just my 2 cents worth.... If you are comparing sexual offences to cases like shop theft, I think it's a unfair comparison as for shoptheft cases 1) usually there will be CCTV 2) Evidence is ample as stolen items will still be with the perpetrator While most sexual offences, (not to down play any of the victims' stories) But if we look at objectively as a investigator... Is mostly words against words as there are little to no evidence to support... Unless is upskirt or penetration, touching your victim usually leave little to no evidence plus there is no CCTV to back your story. No that much evidence I feel might hard to be a police case. While these sexual offences are made public, we might not know the number of false reports made regarding sexual offences. I do agree on the lawyers have to be on equal level, maybe we can limit the number of people helping on case ? Or set up only a fix number of lawyer can take sexual offence cases? In the law, it's a double edge sword for me... If you make it clearer and stricter, it's kinda gonna make the perpetrator focus on grey area of the law. Because if we are looking for loophole we always find it. But I do agree that the court/judge should explain the charge and punishment, not sure if SG have it but maybe we should have a public jury... But then again, sexual offences is sensitive, victim might not feel comfortable with a public jury.... So... Yeah... Grey area are hard to fix... You need to ensure offender are punish but it cant be easily abused... That's my point of view la, but if you think my point of view is the same as my user name then thanks for reading 😅😅😅

watching #14 & #15, totally reminds me of the incident I had last year. I was in the mall and suddenly a middle aged guy touched my b, I was so shocked and the guy just walks away. I quickly told my mum about it and she hit the guy with her bag just to stop the guy from walking away. and the wife asked why was my mum hitting her husband, so my mum told her that he molested me and the auntie said it wasn't on purpose, and my mum yelled back and said "its on purpose" and the auntie looked at the husband and quickly apologised to me on behalf of her husband instead, and quickly grabbed her husband away and twisted his ear and started beating him.

My Lovely Princess Sylvia, the government should impose a more harsher punishment, more heavy sentence towards those sex offenders who outrage the modesty of woman, if sex offenders know the sentence they going to receive is going to be more heavy than before, I believe they will think twice before they commit the crimes. The government should announce the increase of punishment towards sex offenders islandwide, this will help to give woman in singapore more protection and make them feel safe to live in singapore. 😁

I feel like many will hate me for this, but we can’t be too quick to judge. As much as many people say the law doesnt protect women, it actually does. Depending on cases, some are really physical and horrible with NO justice. However there are trashy people who accuses guys of such cases just because the law protects girls. Like my family, we got a lawyer that charged us a 5-digit bill because a girl got jealous of my brother’s relationship and decided to sabotage him. Even as the witness, it was not enough to release a jail statement for him. He didn’t do anything and yet he got charged with 5 charges and reduced to 3. Still got jail time for at LEAST 3 months without doing anything. 😪 as a victim of sexual assult I don’t know what to believe anymore because it is disappointing on both ends.

I feel that sexual predators know how to pick their prey. They tend to target victims who appears timid and soft spoken, and in the end these victims often fail to pluck up the courage to report the case or even if they do report it, they have a hard time making a strong, convincing statement to successfully prosecute the predator. So the law really needs to protect these victims who cannot speak up for themselves.

Penal 354 the law is already strict. 354. -(1) Whoever assaults or uses criminal force to any person, intending to outrage or knowing it to be likely that he will thereby outrage the modesty of that person, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 2 years, or with fine, or with caning, or with any combination of such punishments. But e question mark is up to... N mostly hw e case work is defend lawyer w try to reduce e charges w AGC n it like a negotiation game. Firstly ey w look at e offender it is first timer etc n e places it happen n where did he touch etc.. E more cover up place of course is e more serious.. E list go on... Also There many loophole in e law. I do agree more could be done to protest e women etc reg under sex penal. But I wish to say is mostly these offender lot of time is ey had a traumatic childhood tat lead to the offence. So in order to fix all these often time alway need to go bk to e root.. Otherwise it will alway be repeated.

Hey Nina and Sylvia, I'm sure the NUS student's actions were 100% wrong and he should not have done it. But lets say you ladies have a son and you taught him well, teach him to differentiate good from bad bla bla, but when he got older he molested a girl on the train and he got caught. What would you do? Be like the mother who defended his son, like uk uk the insta live one OR tell him that he is wrong, and let the law decide? I'm sure the mother of the boy in the NUS case was put in a very tight spot being blamed for her sons actions and all, what would either of you have done differently?

I believe Nina and Sylvia would let the son take responsibility for his own action and let the law decide.

Victor Choi I would think so too. But when it comes to mothers, definitely they will try to lower all the charges and jail time for their beloved son. Just want to know from a female’s perspective what would they do? It’s quite the dilemma don’t you think?

Unconditional love can go both ways. Toxic unconditional love -- defend him no matter what he does, let him get away with no consequences, and allow him to grow into a selfish, immoral individual with no respect for the law and the rights of others, all in the name of preserving a superficial sense of 'he is still a good boy so let's not tarnish his future'. Good, healthy, unconditional love -- stand by his side no matter what he does, face the consequences of wrongdoings with him, correct him firmly while reassuring him of your love, guide him to confront his ills, restart on the correct path and grow into a truly honorable person. In other words, would this mother choose to give love that is poisonous, or nourishing? Honestly, it's not an easy choice still, because it takes a stronger person to be willing to confront an unpleasant reality in the first place. Many do not have the strength to do so, that's why many would rather just defend their precious child's 'innocence' at all cost. But it's undeniably the easier way out, and undeniably poisonous. So I won't call it a difficult dilemma. Anyone who has the strength to see this truth clearly will know that toxic love will cause more harm than good in their child's future. Food for thought.

As a mother, what will you do if your son did the same to your daughter(his own sister)? Would you still defend him? Whoever he did the deed to is another family's daughter/loved one. There is no defense for trying to let your loved one get away with bad behavior or murder.

It’s the TikTok era now. If u look at the content, women are objectifying themselves and sexualizing themselves for views and likes. It’s encouraging simping. Who’s to blame for this?

So if more and more men shower in public toilets in gyms and swimming pools they deserve to be filmed peeing and changing clothes? The toilets’ fault is it? With your kind of attitude and mindset, you’re exactly the type of person who’d blame something else rather than the person who committed the act of mistake.

oof this made me think of @melicacy on ig. Despite what they do, this doesn't mean men should run their hands/body part on a random women's body and violate their modesty.

Bran Liu I’m not pushing the blame but it definitely plays a part in moulding the young minds. These kind of creators should respect themselves first if they want others to respect them. It’s just a minority of women however it may affect how kids might perceive women overall.

krystall it’s not only about actions but it’s the mindset. Girls might follow suit and think that doing that will make them popular and guys might think that it’s ok to see them that way. This mindset might only lead to further worse behaviours.

I am great that someone doing this talk. It is true that law is a game for the rich. Unless you can bring it to public using social media. But I must say, sex law protect women more than men.
