When I heard Elwood Blues playing blues harp in the Blues Brothers film from the 80s, I couldn't get over the crazy sound of the harmonica. I watched the film over and over - even watched it last night! Had to get me a harmonica...
Seeing Paul Lamb playing the Station Tavern in London was the final straw - I started having lessons from him and became a Sonny Terry nut. From there Little Walter, Big Walter and gradually found out about all the greats.
Brendan Power introduced me to other players such as Charlie McCoy, JJ Milteau, Howard Levy and then I was hooked - a dead duck!
I started teaching professionally in 1995 while studying how to teach and began running workshops in London inherited from Brendan Power as he was joining Riverdance. The first lesson in school I taught in was Dulwich College in London and then in Bristol.
I've had the luck to study personally with Howard Levy (one week residential), Paul Lamb, Brendan Power, Joe Filisko, Richard Sleigh, Carlos del Junco, Sonny Terry (recorded lesson) and in workshops with Charlie McCoy, Lee Oskar, Steve Baker, Keith Dunn, Rick Estrin, Rick Epping, Adam Gussow amongst lots others - and thanks to all of them for the help which I now pass on to other students.
Performance wise, I have played in many blues bands, and different musical groups as well as performing solo and on cruise ships. I've played on the same bill as Larry Adler in 2000, jammed in concert with Jools Holland and had a long, hilarious and fascinating lunch with Billy Connolly showing him some harmonica techniques he wanted to know about.

Great presentation Ben. It has long been known in medicine that wind instruments are a useful tool for patients with problems associated with pulmonary function. I believe that the harmonica is the best for this. With the instrument you show here it is great for it's therapeutic uses, BUT, should the patient decide that they then want to play the harmonica for the same reasons we do, enjoyment, they have to relearn how to play a standard harp, which incidentally has the same therapeutic benefits as the harp you are demonstrating. So this poses the question, why not use the standard diatonic harp in the first place?

I s this Schaman Harmonica any different from Pulmonica? Both made by Seydel.

Yes, different notes in it. The Schaman is tuned to musical chords and the other is not tuned for playing music I believe

Hi Master Ben , I wanted to ask your advice to choose between two harmonics , which of them suits me more : Suzuki Promaster HA 20 or Suzuki Manji M 20, I do not like with wood body , which would you choose ? Thanks, I hope you help me..... PD. in my country do not sell other harmonica and uses a big river

Nope. They are not the same. You'll need to check out the Pulmonica yourself - also made by Seydel - the oldest harmonica factory in the world. My understanding - and I may be wrong - is that it's made by someone who is a doctor of statistics (not a medical practitioner) - but I haven't looked into it and I may be wrong - check for yourself, but your question was 'are they the same' and the answer's no. Their website says 'The four-hole chords are G7, Am7, Bm7, C7, D7, Em7, F#half-dim. The Pulmonica can serve as a wonderful rhythm instrument in the Key of G. For soloists, it's a bit more challenging because the reeds, gaps, and profiles are set to optimize pulmonary usefulness, rather than musical playability.' Sounds like it's good for chords but less good for soloists - but I've never tried one. For clarity I am not affiliated to either but I've chatted with John Schaman numerous times mostly at harmonica festivals around the globe and he asked me to make this video to look at the musical aspect and see if it's a viable instrument. Ben
