for i the main difference between the two is down to personal preference. that being the main difference between the two, the classic has coverplates which sit flush with the comb and the session protrudes passed the plates. hence the name classic, (i forget the name given between the two just now) because the flush comb is the older design. your correct the 1847 refers to the age of the seydel factory in that they are the oldest harmonica factory in germany still manufacturing today, they predate hohner by around two years if memory serves. when i said the varnish "looks like" yacht varnish i was referring to the quality of the high gloss finish, having been a professional woodworker for around thirty years, starting on the bench with architectural joinery but spending most of that time on building sites i have also been fortunate enough to work in a couple of boatyards here in cornwall working on high spec yachts in which case the finish i have seen on the woodwork there is high gloss and high class, i have not seen it equalled in any other part of the industry in which i have experience. that's just the nature of that industry i actually doubt if it is a marine varnish used on the seydel combs as there are surely better varnishes on the market for something we will have in our mouths for most of the time. personally i prefer danish oil for a finish on anything i put into, say, a kitchen. they probably only achieve that level of gloss finish from the number of coats they use to succeed in so thoroughly seeling the comb. Hope that clears a couple things up for You Brother and i Wish You and your Family the best of evenings...

It says 1847 on the box because that is when the company started. Session steel is not an 1847. 1847 is the model. Classic is because of the wood comb. 1847 silver is the poly comb. Ect. Session steel is its own model. At least I think. Ha ha

This is what a website says under it's photo. Learning the harmonica has never been so accessible! The Seydel 1847 Session Steel Melodic Mater harmonica is one of the best harmonicas for learning country, folk, jazz, or blues. And just like Seydel's premium range of harmonicas, the Session Steel is handmade in Germany to guarantee perfection. Just as the name implies, the Session Steel harmonica boasts Seydel's stainless steel reeds. Even under extreme stress, these reeds have stable tuning while producing a full and overtone-rich sound. They're even corrosion resistant! In fact, every part of the Sessions Steel harmonica has been designed with corrosion resistance in mind. From the ABS comb to the German silver reed plates, right down to the stainless steel screws, this harmonica will last a lifetime. It even includes a leather pouch to keep your harmonica safe.
