I’m a furry who grew up in a city where there were almost no other furries. I’ve gotten so much crap from so many people and places, the only time I feel comfortable telling people I’m a furry is online. I’m not hurting you with my hobby. Yes, there’s cringe, yes, there are many terrible people, and yes, a surprising amount of people have little to no social boundaries. That goes for literally every single fandom. Football, soccer, competitive lifting, anime, politics, any genre of music, if people like it, there are going to be people that are way too overzealous, and do weird stuff. The adjusting tasks to meet your spoons thing is so powerful. I don't feel bad about using my clothes dryer on hot days because I physically can't manage to walk all the way to the clothes line in my back yard.
