I didn't know who Captain Marvel/Shazam was when I watched this episode, so back in the day I really wanted to see him again after the Cadmus stuff ended. It was both fun and frustrating watching this show with no knowledge of the comics at times.

I love the little dialogue where Superman said _"he's right."_ It's where he finally looked at himself and changed. If not for this, Clark probably would have killed Luthor in Divided We Fall. Subtle character growth like this just isn't done anymore. Show, don't tell has really fallen to the wayside in modern writing.

One of the biggest PR coups in Lex Luthor's long, long history, gambling on Supes' mistrust of him to see his plan succeed. It brings to mind a story arc in the comics where Joker became Jack Napier again and did a lot to help reduce crime and help the poor in Gotham, but Batman couldn't let go of his paranoia and it caused a lot of tension between him and his allies as he made an ass of himself.

This episode is a rough one, but necessary. Superman let his temper get the better of him. He forgot he lives in a world of carboard. He forgot his job is to save lives, not punish people. This is what it could look like if he let himself go, and why he has to be better. This shows his fallibility and the fears that he and the League could become Justice Lords, except possibly worse. They are loosing their way, so the question is whether they'll fix their failings and rise back to ideals or fall into darkness. That his shield was burned off in the fightt is a very nice touch of visual symbolism. He lost himself. So his insignia, his heraldry that means hope, is gone.

In his defense though, it's Lex flipping Luthor--the guy who has attempted to murder him and his friends more times than he could count. I think Clark is more than justified in thinking that Lex is still the dirtbag that he is. I mean, Clark gave him plenty of chances over the years and he had repeatedly squandered every chance given to him.

I mean yea, it had to be something that would set Superman off when he saw it. Then when you factor in the nefarious sounding conversation "he just so happened to overhear" so he would even look for it, it was a pretty obvious setup even Superman should have seen through if he didn't do a knee jerk reaction like this. Luthor was counting on him acting this way and he played right into it.

I've got to say, part of me loves this episode, and part of me wishes things could have been different. The episode is a necessary one because it needs to show definitely how far the League has fallen, how their belief in their own infallibility is making them look callous and dangerous while also leaving them open to manipulation. It showcases my favorite hero of all time, Captain Marvel, and gives us a solid Superman vs Captain Marvel fight, and while Billy loses the physical fight due to circumstances, he wins the moral argument without question. At the same time, the fact that this is the only appearance Captain Marvel gets on the series is something of a bitter pill. It also makes me wish that this could have been a two-parter with more set up to allow for a longer fight between Billy and Clark, as the battle we got, while fun, also seemed shorter than some of the other dust ups Clark has had with folks like Mongul, Doomsday or Captain Atom. The biggest frustration, honestly, is that it's Cap's only official appearance in the Justice League series . . . and it isn't really a Captain Marvel episode. It's a Superman episode where Cap is given just enough screen time to establish him as a character, but exists mostly to be a foil to Supes. He's there to showcase how short Superman's temper has become, his tendency to overreact, how certain Superman is in his own decisions and infallibility, and to read Superman the riot act in the end for his behavior. Basically, he exists solely to highlight things about Superman, rather than the episode being about Captain Marvel the way, say, The Greatest Story Never Told was about Booster Gold. It's not a bad episode by any stretch, I love it. But it makes me think "what if" and imagine other things. We never get to see Billy and Clark reconcile or Cap help out the League ever again, even during Darkseid's invasion. Not even just a silhouette in an alley, hearing someone yell "Shazam" and lightning striking said alley to let us know that yes, despite his issues with the League, Cap was still going to help defend the Earth.

While DC's movies were a MESS (with rumors The Flash movie may or may not reboot the thing to correct mistakes made...), "Shazam" was welcomed with open arms. It was a DC movie that was fun! Meanwhile are Marvel Carol got her movie...and it was mixed. NTM... Brie Larson became a target to nearly everyone with a spacebar or twitch account because Brie was said to be very hard to work with on set. From stories of her throwing tantrums, acting full of herself, being rude to fans, she became notoriously HATED. Carol's popularity bombed. Brie Larson acting immature and uninformed was hurting the brand. One of the most well known moments of this was an awkward interview with Brie, Chris Helsworth, and Jeremy Renner. Where Chris asked her about doing her own stunts and being "The next Tom Cruise". Brie insisted she had no stunt doubles and snidley said "No, the first ME, thank you VERRRY much." "Shazam" was seen as a mix of both MCU and DC ideas. Fun, color, and excitement, along with drama, icons, and thought. It is rumored Shazam might get a bigger role in upcoming DC movies...and Carol with be downplayed in future MCU movies.

4:28 yeah especially for Batman in the Old Wounds episode where he was going to give a guy a savage beating which he didn’t deserve that treatment because he only wanted money for child support and especially for Wonder Woman in 1984 where she threw out 4 thugs out of a window which would have killed them and only one of them was threatening a child while the others were trying to talk him out of it.

Can I just point out that the guy with x-ray vision saw a bomb with a timer, and Billy's immediate reaction was to fight his idol? So much damage could have been avoided if Captain Marvel hadn't stepped in. Sure, Superman still would have looked like a bit of an ass. But the big question would have been "why did Luthor put a big timer on a generator" and not "why are 2 league members destroying a city with infighting". I get that the story is about Superman being fallible, but somebody really should have called out Billy for his bad choices in this matter.
@boobah5643
@boobah5643 Жыл бұрын
It's really hard for me to say that Billy made worse choices than Clark here. Clearly, a bomb underground means you need to... attack a playground? No, it's obvious that Supes really was off the handle, since he could have just drilled down to the bomb with minimal (short term) disturbance of the surface. Instead, with a timer counting down, he decides to try battering his way down, taking longer and causing more collateral damage. Billy would have never had the chance to interfere if Clark had just thrown himself through the ground at Luthor's device.
@MrDj232
@MrDj232 Жыл бұрын
@@boobah5643 I didn't say worse choices, just bad ones. Generally if Superman sees a bomb you don't step up to say "this supervillain who bombed tons of places is totally not evil now so stop trying to disarm it." You turn off or remove the bomb now and ask questions when there aren't a ton of civilians in danger.
@shadenox8164

@@MrDj232 Did you miss the part where Chuck mentions he literally suggested getting an expert in to examine it instead of flying off the handle? He didn't doubt superman saw something, he just thought it was better to be sure before flipping out and destroying shit. Superman kept going despite that perfectly reasonable suggestion. At that point trying to stop him was not stupid since he wasn't listening to reason. So no, this one is all on Supes.
@Paxchi
@Paxchi Жыл бұрын
Superman couldn't see what was in the device due to lead shielding. Captain Marvel showed up, asked Superman and Luthor to calm down, listened to both sides, and said "Why don't we get the Atom or Steel to analyze the device and see if Luthor is telling the truth or not." And when Superman refuses to listen (partially because of Luthor"s goading), Cap steps in and tries to talk to Superman some more. At which point Superman attacks Marvel by chucking him through a statue. So Cap throws Superman away without hurting him, and waits to see Superman's response. Superman flies back, fists pulled back to fight, so Cap flies up to meet him and the fight starts. So to reiterate, Cap showed up, de-escalated the situation, listened to both sides, and then made a suggestion that would have resolved the situation without violence or property damage. He only responded with violence after Superman attacked him. And it wasn't even like Steel or the Atom were hard to reach or far away, the League has teleporters. They were literally seconds away, but Superman was so sure he was right that he felt more comfortable attacking his teammate than listening to said teammate.
