Santa Claus was actually based on a real person: St Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, who was a strong opponent against Arianism, a heresy against the divinity of Christ. According to Catholic tradition, he became Santa Claus because there was a man who was wealthy, but lost everything and was unable to to marry of his 3 daughters. It must be mentioned that St Nicholas was from an affluent background and had money to give. He did so secretly. He threw bags of money, enough to pay the dowry of the youngest daughter so she could be married, then the second. The Father wanted to know who was doing it, and stayed up late to catch him in the act. So yes he was real, but has been, for millennia. That is what the traditions teach at least.
