Just noticed this on rewatch. I think the uppercut buff was to give her oki in juggles, like after EX fire spinner. I the video, it said that she was +18 after landing, so she can dash up and be +2, as opposed to before, when she'd be 0.

Lucia got some extremely good buffs this patch, especially considering her mediocre status before. All the safety and damage buffs really make up for her lack of utility, and it looks like VS2 and VT2 got better. Might have to add her to my list of potential side characters one day

L Fire Spinner being +2 on hit does a lot for her quality of life. It's a special she lands very often. When it was 0 on hit, characters with far reaching lights could reliably challenge after getting hit. I used to be able to hit young Zeku's stLK after a L Fire Spinner connected with me every time, no matter if I got hit or not. Now Lucia has a clear advantage if it hits.

this char has been struggling since the start with a weak identity and generally weak tools. she has always been a character with a broad but shallow pool of moves, most of them being flawed in multiple ways and options from many of them being unnecessarily restrictive. this patch it feels like they have finally settled on her run moves and v-system as being the things they want her to focus on, and made changes in the margins to other moves to complement that approach. i have found her to be one of the most frustrating designs in the game since her introduction and i think these changes are very good. i'm not convinced any of this makes her a STRONG character, but she feels way more like a coherent design than a collection of underwhelming tools. E: some extra stuff you left out: EX hop kick being 13f means it works in juggles where it wouldn't otherwise (e.g. VT2 swing, run VS2, EX hop kick in the corner.) the improved knockdown on all of her DPs not only improves their use as grounded combo enders, it means she no longer loses advantage on a dash in after using them as a juggle ender or late AA. some moves in SFV have diffurent launch behavior depending on whether they hit a grounded opponent or someone who's already airborne, usually giving less juggle time and therefore less advantage. her DPs only being +2 on ground knockdown meant after an AA you would be 0 or -1 when dashing in afterward. she seems to consistently be +2 after DP in the current patch, which is still not amazing advantage since they can back roll, but it actually allows her to dash in and start offense after an AA. i discovered this flaw in the patch where seth was added, when i realized that DPing their divekick never granted advantage since they would always be too low in the air. i immediately dropped lucia lol

I would love if someone could elaborate on the concept of "activation routes". Is it just best starters for dmg? How important is it important to route to a plus move? Is there a certain frame advantage that when paired with activation leads to better mix?

Different activations give you different options on hit or block. For example, Lucia can combo if she activates VT1 from EX running VS1, but not from meterless. EX tackle crumples the opponent, giving different options than if you activate off meterless tackle. The frame advantage for her activations can vary wildly, so you need to be aware of what you can get away with. For example, if activating off standing VS1, cancelling the final hit lets you combo a stand fierce, but cancelling from the third hit doesn't. It's about picking the best option for your situation.

canceling into v trigger keeps the hitstun of the move you canceled with almost none of the ending lag. a good activation route takes advantage of that, whether it's to extend a combo, make a risky move safe, or keep your pressure going when it'd normally end. a basic example for any character is activating off of sweep. if they get hit by the sweep, you can act right away to pressure their wakeup. and if they block the sweep, you still get to move first, so they can't punish it.

@@timeparadox999 Sorry I don't think I was clear in my original question. I understand all that, I just don't get what makes a route better than another and how one would buff/nerf that aspect. Baf talks about how routes got improved and I'm sure being able to activate off of more stuff can only help, I just don't get what more you get compared to the examples you gave.

@@DragynFyre12 Having multiple routes lets you determine what resources you want to spend. For example, G’s EX dash upper is an extremely popular VT cancel because of its safeness on block, but prior to this patch it only worked with VT1, rendering VT2 a weaker pick because EX dash upper is a fast, long-ranged option that leads to follow ups on hit. Generally they don’t nerf activation routes. Buffing them usually involves adding VT cancels to more attacks, or shifting them to be earlier in an attack, giving you better frame advantage, an extra hit before the cancel, or more time to react on hit or block

I still wished her VS2 was better. Other characters got major overhauls for their V-Skills so I was kinda hopeful that they would make it so that I'd have to think about which V-Skill to pick on a match by match basis but it looks like V-Skill 1 is still superior.

I don't understand how this character was ever bad. She's so god damn oppressive and fast. As soon as you lose neutral she forces you to use meter or V meter to end her turn then as soon as you lose neutral again she forces you to spend again and it's a vicious cycle that never allows you to save meter.

I’m glad they used a character people overlooked and gave them a chance. I feel a lot of characters are like that; if you gave them another shot they’d take off. I just wish they were a bit more faithful to the original character. Her noodle gimmicks…really dumb. And I liked when she was a buff woman who took no shit instead of being another cutesy girl. It wouldn’t have hurt to have a serious female character that wasn’t supposed cute. People probably think I’m being pretentious but I think it’s really nice to have roster variety even in this department.

I agree with that, yeah. In SFV the most interesting part of her character is 'Brooklyn accent'. But I feel like Street Fighter for the most part has always had pretty shallow, one note characters, with the rare exceptions that stand out as more interesting in appearance and personality.

all of the new characters introduced in sfv have become so damn sick after all the buffs and changes. i cant think of really a lame sfv original character, and the characters that were overhauled for v like seth actually ended up in some cases better than their original version (imo at least)

holy shit this looks so cool I liked lucia at launch but felt like she was a bit stifling and limited, it looks like a lot of routes and options have opened up for her here and I'm excited to try her again this patch has been insane, I've been watching your vids about these changes and a good half a dozen characters' changes have looked so cool that I want to try so many different characters now
