Learned this in a film class, and saw a great example of it in Wheel of Time's episode 3 of the first season. Blood trailing out in liquid, graphically matched to a treeline. One of the most startling examples I've seen. Shocked and delighted, and made me search out this video.

If you want a master class on graphic match cuts, watch The Simpsons. They've made it a major part of the series' DNA, given that it is used every single season, in nearly every episode.

This is good to know. If only the writing were tolerable in later seasons. (I've heard it's gotten slightly better in some later seasons, but it feels like the characters are being raped in some modern episodes, having no soul, just being any other comedy show...)

I wish it were cut earlier. But maybe we saw the shape at that angle enough that it worked, and would have been too obvious if a direct (paused?) cut. I've never consciously caught it watching 2001, but it's also been a while.

I anything a good graphic match cut takes me out of the experience/story as I'll likely notice it than keep me from noticing the cut. What rather hides the cut for me would be a connection/continuation of story line or narrative and avoiding the next scene to start with nothing happening (like the sunrise, tea/drops, or any other general environmental shots seen in this video).

Doesn't act the same on all people, anon. It can be startling and take away from continuity by being too much of a showpiece. The best match is one that probably goes unnoticed by almost everyone, but still retains the impact.

I always thought that the transition of the drain to her eye (in the Psycho film) was a metaphor; her life slowly draining out of her body.

There are different cuts of films, especially for different regions. (Unfortunately. Art should be art anywhere, but it's also a huge business.) I'd try torrenting one while using a VPN.
