He had nothing to work with at the beginning, yet he lead this team to fight, beating the Chargers and almost beating the No.1 seed of AFC twice. Even if he played conservatively or do not have the ability to lead them to a super bowl, you think Houston can miraculously compete next year? I don't think they can even with Watson back. Yet, they fired the only coach willing to rebuild the team from ruins, motivate his team to fight on even with the complete lack of talent, lead his team to an ugly yet respectable 4-13 record. You have to have good players to run your offense or defense. Look at all of the head coaches that got jobs. They come from winning teams. Probably had some dam good players on that team running their offense or defense. Let's look at Dan Quinn. Got fired from Atlanta. Why did not have very good defensive players, so his scheme didn't work. Well, he gets to Dallas. Now he is a genius. Why? Look at the players that Dallas has on defense. So, to say it's the players. This segment was well discussed; this is a great example of how two intelligent adults can disagree and still have a productive discussion. That being said, I believe that focusing on the skin color of the coach as a leading point of contention is very short sighted ( Wiley pointed this out) and does not allow the listener to get full context. The NFL as an organization employs players at a minimum salary level of 660k (per google) and 78 percent of them are black. The Texans were most successful during the tenure of Rick Smith as GM and took their drop to the cellar when he had to leave. Ozzie Newsome was a tremendous GM in Baltimore for a long time. We need to use these forums to allow all listeners to benefit from them and not alienate any one in the discussion. I believe Wiley did a great job on this topic, although this topic should include the broader context as I discussed above. In the end, there are several considerations that go into decisions like this; if Wiley is correct, then the Texans should not have placated to Watson in that manner ( I am a Texans fan and live in Houston). Unfortunately, the one that has the gold makes the rules and hopefully after the Bill Obrien debacle as a GM, the organization will take a step back, examine themselves and move forward in a positive way. I for one believe the Texans are and have been 'diverse' for some time; the Dolphins actually fired a head coach with pedigree over obvious politics (idiots). Culley is not a victim, he was paid to do a job (like most of us in the US) and will collect the remainder of the guarantee on his contract (unlike most working people because we do not work under contract). If the goal is to reach the Super Bowl, then Culley is NOT your man; he is respectable and did his job to the best of his ability which is all he can control.

But look how long it took Cal McNair to fire Bill O Brien... actually Cal made him GM and OC. Bob McNair is spining in his grave. Cal has no interest in a football team but to fill the stands. And listening to Easterby. He should just sell the team.

Tuff being a head coach now today, guys like Brian Flores, Caldwell and others shouldn't been let off . Too much pressure and bad for the owner going from coach to coach changes if things don't work out. Some of these owners/gms don't know nothing about football, if you get the right guy, have to work with him and let him do his thing to turn the franchise around. All about trust and respect between a head coach and the owner 💯

The main reason why Culley was hired in the first place is because NO ONE wanted to coach the Texans!

Deshaun wanted out before we ever even knew who the coach was gonna be. He requested the trade after the GM hire. He was promised some input on the coaching hire as well as the GM hire.. They even hired a search firm that they paid 500k and when the firm came back with 3 qualified candidates (two of them minorities) they were just like oh wait that New England guy is available? Yeah let’s go with him 🤦🏾♂️which is just another in a long sad history of this franchise hiring Patriot castoffs hence the “Some things never change” tweet from Watson. NOBODY wanted Caserio. As a Texans fan it’s extremely frustrating that it appears as if somehow our front office thinks the whole “Patriots South” nickname people sometime use to describe our organization is a compliment. It’s a meme they’re literally insulting our organization yet we keep signing former patriot players, hiring former Bill Belichick assistants, and now even GMs that were formerly apart of their organization. The crying out loud Ryan Mallet and Brian Hoyer used to quarterback this team.. both former Brady backups 😩🤦🏾♂️ and this has been going on for about the last decade now and we’ve only been around for 20 years… literally half of your existence you’ve been employing this strategy and the most you’ve gotten to show for it is a few 2nd round playoff exits. Definition of Insanity man.

@edsheppard72012 жыл бұрын
You keep talking about what Watson wanted. and he caused collateral damage. You have to keep in mind that yes he may have wanted a black coach but not just any black coach. He had someone in the pool not Culley and they said NO, so then when he decided not to play they went out and hired Culley. To me that was a spit in the face. It was obvious they just did it to get Watson to play. So the bottom line he still didn't have a say in the hiring process ,

No QB picks the head coach. Watson's entitlement is a joke. Guy signed a big money extension AFTER the team dumped Hopkins, regretted it after a bad season, and tried to force his way out. Everything else is for show. If you dont want to be there, dont sign the contract.

As much as I want a black head coach to succeed, but there certainly is something more than just race that simplifies this decision. The GM and owner may have seen a better coach to hire this year than what they have in Culley., maybe Flores since Caserio is a former Pat as well.

About time somebody said it. Culley was hired to appease Watson, it didn't work, so he's out. He got paid $8m on a gamble, so you can't feel too badly for the man. As far as the Texans go, he might have only been fired when Flores became available. But remember, Culley was hired as an "unqualified candidate" because no qualified candidate meeting Watson's criteria would put themselves in that situation. We'll see if Flores will, or if he gets a Watson return guarantee first.

@philwade2 жыл бұрын
Place blame in it's proper place, there were multiple coaches available that would have satisfied both the requirements of providing the QB with input into the team that he plays for thus creating a sense of ownership, "you work harder for yours than you do for someone else's". The second thing is that the Texans passed over all the best candidates like Leftwich, Solis, Bieniemy and others were virtually passed over and a crony system was further entrenched by the hiring of Nick Cesario into the Texans organization thus ignoring the results of the consulting group of Tony Dungy, Jimmy Johnson, Ron Graves, R.C. Buford and our own Andre Johnson for the single opinion of you know who "Jack the Easter-bunny Easterby". Until the Texans rid themselves of this non-football influenced crony they will be the worst destination for top players, coaches and results.

I think he should’ve gotten two years considering the roster he had. He most likely shouldn’t have been hired. Jim Caldwell, Marvin Lewis, and Greg Roman we better options. But he took the job and too many people exceeded expectations To one of Marcellus points, I think there are plenty of qualified black coaches and former black players who want to coach. One of the issues is the people doing the hiring for position coaches may not bring in more black coaches. Most coordinators come from being a position coach.
