Singapore is affordable for the basic essentials, public transport and public housing. For some in the middle income bracket who say they are struggling, perhaps they should 1st look if they are spending beyond their means eg. Owning a car, eating out often, 1-2 annual overseas holiday, replace gadgets very often, etc.

If you prepare to work, SG government prepares to help its citizens. There are safety nets for low income families, single parents, children with disabilities, elderly who are staying alone and many more. Both of you have accurately presented SG, thank you. The coming budget for 2025/2026 will address cost of living for local. The reasons for high prices for owning a car and for foreigners are to control traffic jams and influx of people coming respectively. The former will affect productivity and waste of waiting time on the road. The latter is to attract the rich and talented pool of people.

Plus local citizens have to buy homes here and support /provide their families here too so the costs is high relative to foreign workers/expats. Agreed with everything said on SG...only is too small and tiny, if u are rich can travel overseas regularly but not those with lower income and those retiree, that why most Malaysian don't take up SG citizenship only PR, as they come back to Malaysia to but buy any priced property and retired comfortably.
Should not compare prices like that, should compare the earnings to prices in percentage then can say it's expensive or not.

if you do not convert, dollar to dollar, Singapore I think is cheaper than Malaysia. (Singapore you still can get under S$4 chicken rice but in Malaysia you are unlikely to get RM4 Chicken rice.) Singapore controlled inflation better because of strong and stable currency.

@@michaelt.6096 Even as it is, recent articles have also shown Malaysian's are also facing issues of affording housing in Malaysia ... from ST "Home ownership beyond the reach of most Malaysians" city to city comparison, they are facing issues too. Not taking account of housing that far from city centre etc. Which may also possibly mean, travelling very far for work or having to rent a place in city to work and going home in the outskirts to live in. And assuming if the individual lives outskirts away from city would and works outskirts too, that will likely mean lower wages too. A project manager in KL earns estimate 8K RM, their purchasing power would be lesser than us. eg a starbucks latter cost est RM16 vs SGD 7.7 ... So yeah, Malaysians earning RM spending RM is not having any better ...

If you live like an expatriate, needless to say, things are expensive. But, well most locals eat at hawker centres or food courts, or shop at wet markets rather than supermarkets. This explains why at PPP, the income of an average Singaporean is much higher than at nominal rate. The government here has done a lot to alleviate higher costs, to build a more inclusive society.

Inflation and rising cost of living are global problems that the SG government cannot completely control. They already try to help the people with CDC vouchers, tax rebates, utility subsidies for public housing dwellers, etc. Declining birth rate is also common to most developed countries eg Japan, S Korea, etc, so it’s not unique to SG. Changing the government won’t improve these matters and might even make things worse if it causes political instability and brings in incompetent leaders.
The median gross monthly salary for fresh diploma graduates in Singapore ranges from SGD 2,300 to SGD 2,614, while degree holders earn between SGD 3,100 and SGD 5,600. By your late 20s or early 30s, it's possible to progress to senior or managerial roles, earning SGD 5,000-8,000 or more per month, with some exceeding SGD 10,000. Many seniors continue working into their later years due to a lack of sufficient retirement savings, as CPF contributions were only introduced on 1 July 1955 and were unavailable earlier to help build funds for retirement. Naturally, if you do not hold a diploma or degree, you cannot expect to earn as much as those who do, this is a universal trend observed worldwide be it in Malaysia or Singapore unless you be your own boss!

You are free to go where you think you can get higher pay for the same job. You are also free to go earn RM spend in RM or go earn USD spend in USD if you feel that is better. I respect those who instead of complaining vote with their feet and make a better life elsewhere. But maybe you will also find that a loser in one place may also be a loser in another place. Nothing to do with the country one is in.
Therefore, those expats from Malaysia have to pay the rental to Singaporean, who work part time job earning 1.5k to 2.5k instead of paying to their parents.

I don't think Singapore is as expensive as what media always rank her. I suspect the ranking only use private properties (non-HTB). Obviously, these private properties are very expensive and will drive up their rankings. They are usually in very nice areas, but they do not include the 75% population the regular ordinary people live. Rankings are based on equal common items a typical household should have and needs; which will include automobiles, which are outrageously expensive there. These two items will definitely drive Singapore ranking to the very top. Personally, I think there is no way Singapore can rank above Hong Kong, London or New York. Singapore should be about the same ranking as Shanghai.
