Might be a touch of confirmation bias. If I recall correctly, the star theme would play globally every time the Bros used their item, but about the only way you'd know when the other characters used their items is if they were really close. Especially DKJ and Koopa.

The rivalry system still exists in Mario Kart 8, but it's only applied to the 12 characters that were playable in a Mario Kart 8 demo. Those characters were Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Toad, Toadette, Koopa Troopa, Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong, and Bowser. All of the 12 character have two rivals. I would know as I usually play as Toadette, and Yoshi and Wario very consistently give me some fierce competition.

When it comes to items in Mario Kart, I think Uncle hit the nail on the head. If you turn items off in Smash, it still feels like Smash, because the essence of Smash is in the characters and the movesets, which is retained in items-off gameplay. However, if you turn items off in Mario Kart, it no longer feels like Mario Kart; it just becomes an average racing game with a Mario skin. Notice also that while competitive Smash has items off, competitive Mario Kart still uses items. Heck, even people who play Mario Kart Wii competitively still use items, and THAT game has some crazy RNG in its item system. Sure, there is a place for itemless Mario Kart, and if you enjoy it, great! That's why the option is there in the VS settings. Plus, Time Trials are there too, so you can master the tracks in a no-item setting, and I even go into there from time to time to try to beat the staff ghosts. But to me, Mario Kart just isn't Mario Kart without its wacky items.

For one of Greg's Community Day's, we played Mario Kart 8 on 200cc with the items off. It was interesting because besides the kart stuff that Greg mentioned, things like cornering and braking suddenly become really important, and while it was fun, it made my hand hurt. I don't think we did that again, i wouldn't mind trying no items again on 150cc for the sake of my hand, it would be interesting

Yeah, 200cc is so interesting in that it fundamentally changes the way the game is played compared to the other difficulties. Items off in Mario Kart usually makes the game boring (IMO) because there's not enough mechanics involved beyond holding A and drifting, especially after they simplified drifting past MKDS. 200cc forces you to be a lot more mindful of turns, letting go of the gas or braking, and learning when it's safe to drift, so items off on that difficulty isn't as detrimental. In the inevitability that they make the next Mario Kart, I hope 200cc is a standard setting because I actually really like that mode. Don't get to play it much though since the series generally attracts a more casual audience though.

I think the appeal of Mario spinoffs in general are that they're (insert genre) but wacky. Mario Kart has items, Mario RPGs have action commands/real time elements, the sports games have things like boss battles and stuff, and Mario Party has wacky boards and minigames.

I think this is another argument in terms of Mario Kart to something like CTR. The stats is tied to the characters as well as the turbo feature. Take out the items and you have to rely on using which character, how well you know the course and your skills with the constant turbos. But the mentality of CTR is abusing those turbos while Mario Kart is relying on Items to balance the competitive edge of the builds people have. It’s not to say it’s invalid, but I get the point. But frankly it would get pretty boring due to being forced into that meta mindset, because your competition is running a build that you can’t beat casually. You NEED something to at least don’t make the online or offline experience a “Funky Kong” only Kart or Mario Bike Wii.

200cc no items is as chaotic as 150cc with items. 150cc with no items is dull because it’s too easy to go fast around the track, with 200cc you have to wrestle the kart around and it’s very easy to mess up. I’d rather lose a race because I overshot a turn than getting hit with an item or someone chaining bullet bills and stars by deliberately hanging back.

The thing about not using items in mario kart is that once a skilled player gets a significant lead it makes it almost impossible for the rest to catch up as they have no way to interact with the people at top. As opposed to a fighting game like smash bros where you are constantly interacting and reacting to each other. That's why i think items are absolutely necessary in Mario Kart.

Thankfully, Wave 3 of the Booster Course Pass adds a pretty neat feature: if you play on VS Mode and select "Custom Items" when choosing the item settings, the game allows you to turn on or off certain items if you don't want the Coin or Blooper item (I turn both off every time I play VS Mode, because Coins really shouldn't be in item boxes and Blooper is so ineffective in power that it just comes off more as annoying). It's a cool addition and I hope it comes back in later games.

The key to playing without items is the same as time trial: You pick the heaviest character/kart combo you can cause they got the best max speed. Without items, acceleration is mostly useless since you don't need to recover your speed nearly as often.

I feel that with items in Mario kart they are ingrained into the core of the game, whereas smash they can be fun additions. I remember an old Dougdoug video that said items in smashare like bbq sauce in a meal. It’s tasty as heck, but it overpowers subtler flavours so much, that’s all you can taste.

I'd say the key difference between Smash with no items and Mario Kart with no items is that in Smash if you're not in the lead, you still have a chance to make a comeback from any point whereas with Mario Kart if you're too far behind, there's literally nothing you can do unless your opponent screws up which wouldn't be likely in speeds below 200cc

I wish Waluigi Pinball had gotten a separate remix from the one already in MK8, but I understand why they opted out, disappointing as it is. I can't say I'd really like playing Mario Kart with items off, because then it turns into 'The person who grinded their best times in Time Trials wins'. Then again, some of the items in the game really need to get toned down in the next one, either in how often they show up or how punishing they are. We got the Super Horn to counter Spiny Shells, give us a Lightning Rod or something to counter Thunderbolt.

Funny enough, Mario Kart 8 competitive with items on is the competitive way to play cause you can manipulate the item RNG. Most good players know when and where certain items are going to pop up. Many of them count seconds after the shock is used to know when it'll be back in play. It just adds a deeper element for strats and gambles that make the game more interesting than standard racers.

Honestly, items off is what I mainly do when I'm by myself. Most of the time I just want to turn my brain off and listen to music on my phone. I just do Vs Race, 150cc, items off but leave coins on, set stage choice to random, 4 per set, and then go. Of course, when I'm playing with friends, items on 100%.

Mario kart is a bit more fun and interesting with items on. However, I turned items off a few times, and even on harder difficulty, it was more efficient to win because I could focus more on the racing aspect without being gimped by an item. Without items, you can focus more on your natural skill as opposed to relying on item RNG

I believe some comments already mentioned but yeah, I believe the best experience of Items Off in This Mario Kart would be 200cc. I've never Personally done it, but I'd like to believe it comes close to being like Smash Bros Items Off. -insert obligatory 'Fox Only, Final Destination here'- As Greg mentioned, it then turns the game into not only pure speed [racing], but now you Have to think about the best kart OR also the kart You Yourself feel comfortable using throughout. But I'm also backing MANY people when I say: not every course is cut out for 200cc, no matter how skillful you are. (And yes, Mainly the courses with a Lot of 90-degree turns that aren't that wide).

I don't care too much about the setup of my car/bike, but I prefer pure racing cuz if I'm gonna win, I wanna win cuz I did well, not because I got lucky. If I wanted to play mario kart without the items I would've played some other racing game like Gran turismo, Need for Speed or whatever modding of a race track to insert in GTA 5. I can agree that with no items it's an actual skill practice on whatever kart combination along with based on the weight character you pick, I just prefer the chaos and ensue because it's Mario kart. With Smash Brothers, it's kinda why tournaments don't invoke Items because it would sorta be like cheating especially if you know how dangerous/broken certain items are. With Smash, it's a matter of how much you know when practicing the fighter you pick vs how well you can time the attacks against your opponent.

Mario Kart doesn't have the complexity of mechanics to really work without items, without items there's not really anything you can do to catch up with someone ahead of you who has an equal amount of skill and knowledge of the track. Mario Kart is meant to be a simple party racing game, one that still supports and rewards skillful play, but is able to be played by anyone, and have a chance for anyone to win. Items are ingrained into the game, it's not like an extra fun thing like in Smash, it's a central mechanic, and turning them off turns off a big part of the game, with nothing else to fill that gap.

Also in the case of Smash its still Smash with items off because the core gameplay is still very different from other fighters. A friend once tried compared it to Street Fighter but to my memory there's no knocking opponents off the stage to kill and the mechanics are difficult too.

Personally I could never play Mario kart wit items off unless its something for crack fun like only Blue shells or no coins. Its just feels wrong to play without items i feel
