Sounds like they were great yoga classes. No wonder he got lured in (I listened on Spotify) Cults use not only peak experiences as a hook, but also altered states of consciousness to make us more suggestible. Self-hypnosis was really popular for a while. Then for some reason some people decided to spread a rumour that hypnosis isn't real, which didn't make it any less popular but got it rebranded. It gets incorporated into some mindfulness meditations, into some yoga classes, into other types of meditation (though many already had hypnosis in them and are older than that word), into self-actualization seminars etc etc. and that's fine, but because people have been tricked into believing hypnosis isn't real, they don't recognise when they are being put into a trance, and that makes them more vulnerable. Everyone believes in alerted/alternative states of consciousness like what you get from some drugs, and many believe that you can enter them without drugs, yet somehow hypnosis isn't taken seriously? By default, people are very bad at telling when they are "impaired". E. G. if they are too drunk to drive, if they are working slower and making more mistakes due to tiredness. we are more suggestible when hungry and tired, the same is true for altered states, trances, etc. hence many cults making you fast, or meditate, etc. One way to recognise this is to practice self-hypnosis.

Rings so many Scientology bells. I guess when you start a cult with no walls, you’ll naturally gravitate toward the same coercive control techniques. The financial investment alone would be a deterrent to leaving.

That's interesting, I thought they had gone out of business because the three branches I knew of closed down (including the one in the University district the guest talks about) I even read on of Ilchi Lee's books (the Sedona one) and found it to be simplistic and uninteresting. Glad you are bringing attention to this.

Dear Scott Carney. It really is the state of awakening in the confuse mind created by so called Lamas and Gurus. I know you have been in Bhutan by the way that you mentioned Drukpa Kuenley. At times, I just wondered that it is only me who is antagonist or a devil to the existing practice in Buddhist world. I like the way you make the people aware of all the ills that is portrayed and implicated to the innocent people. I too had bad experiences with Sogyel when i questioned him about the meditative and mindful practices as a curriculum for school children when their level of thinking is just at the surface and innocent. I was dupped as " Ghost" in the public but it did not scare of as I live my own life based on the universal truth. Thereafter, I have given up believing in all lamas and gurus, the Pseudo lamas and Gurus. However, there are good Buddhist practioners as well which I learn to find the truth and peace. Request, my enquiry to the books that you have: Is the Enlightenment Trap and A Death on the Diamond Mountain same? I just wish to state on Moa Tsetong, the Chinese communist leader when he stated : Religion is poison. Even ,the hard core man was not wrong. I am sure he experienced the ill practices of the Buddhist. Cheers.

Same thing happened to me with the weeping. The instructor massaged my stomach and when i was holding back weeping he repeated "do not conjure, do no conjure". cried out the full tears. that's the hook. after 10 days i had them figured out and never returned even for a refund.

The understanding of the very early Christian practice of the mortification of the body got a short shrift, I feel. Mr. Carney may not know that these people actively left their community to go and live in the Egyptian desert as a hermit by themselves. Naturally, after some time, hermit communities came into being and became the origin of Western and Eastern Christian monasticism, but that's not how the whole thing started.

I recommend you also look into the World Mission Society Church of God, also based out of Korea, and the founder is saying they’re a reincarnation of Jesus or something. My sister got into it pretty heavily for a while but she seems to have calmed down thank goodness This group sounds pretty similar, but not as bad crime wise
