5 cents about the handle color. Bog wood is rare material now, even at the old good days I assume it was rare. But at my grandparents village all wooden handles are "dubh", folks just burn the outer layer of the wood and than oil it well on the hot wood or even boil the handle in oil. This treatment makes the wood almost black and very durable. We are far from Scotland, but countryside is a countryside everywhere.

I'm not trying to talk shit but this is exactly why Americans don't want their guns taken. People will always do horrific things with what they have available and I guarantee if they planned and gathered enough money those people could STILL get guns, instead they get knives and guess what? Now you're not allowed to carry a knife. They'll probably start confiscating them from homes in a few years for "safety". Correct me if I'm wrong but, if you defend yourself successfully and end up killing the other person or severely injuring them and you used ANYTHING but your hands for defense you go to jail anyway?

It's really weird to me that I clicked on this because I wanted to know which style of Sgian Dubh to get but I have a small, good quality, blade that's similar in size and has the exact same blade profile as the one you prefer. My top edge is a bit straighter but I planned on honing it down anyway. Otherwise it is the same. I'm excited that I essentialy already have the item thats the subject of the video. I look forward to using it in bushcrafting scenarios here in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky. Lots of folks 'round here have Scottish, Irish, and English heritage. I think I'll call this blade the 'Appalachian Sgian Dubh'.

Brother, I'm blown away by every video you do. Entertainment and Education are a hard thing to get right and you nail it every time. Even from the start of my subscription your quality has been awesome and has continued to grow as well as your knowledge and wisdom, which you share freely out of love for us and for the subject matter you are bringing back to life, for wanna be highlanders around the world :) :) :) I would say you are doing our Ancestors proud at a time when they have been lost from public knowlege. I thought after many- many hours of watching your videos (better than BBC Documentaries lol) and taking on that wisdom to share in my life to help pass the knowledge on and keep it alive for future generations. The least I could do was take the time to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the work you put into a 20-minute video, that has taken a lifetime to produce :) I shall do my best to teach it to my household. The knife video was a better shot advert than a full production television advert :) With all the knowledge and inspiration and craftsmanship that has gone into it from you and the full team involved. I have been looking for a knife like that for years and with such a story behind it......I think the term is "thank you take my money LOl" :) :) :) Even if I did not like your kife I would still enter the competition to support all the work you and your team do :). So even if I'm not lucky enough to win one the money shall be going to a good cause. I know what's at the top of my big boys Santas list lol (present to myself LOL) Much love keep on shinning and make cool stuff and men and woman like us will step up support men and woman like you before amazon buys the world LOL much love from Boe and family Welsh borders.

My brother makes these, but he sneaks in a rare earth magnet inside the sheath to add a little extra grab on the blade. It works really well, and is completely hidden once its been finished. Black wood and white antler is my favorite look, with only a shiny line of metal to separate them at the bolster. Great job, making a knife takes some time and care, otherwise everyone would do it. Scandi grind is my personal favorite as well. Cheers! Edit: Oops I dropped my comment inside your comment.

Man, I find the similarities between our cultures (Highlander and gaucho) We have our own heavy wool blanket, from native-american origin, (poncho), which could be used as shelter, as an over garment and as pants (chiripá) We have 2 carry knives, either the "xerenga" (simple, big, work knife carried in a crude leather sheethe) or the "Facón" (almost a dagger, but with only one cutting edge, once used to be made with broken swords, and in more recent times, post 1850, imported from Solingen, Germany of locally forged. Carried in a crude leather sheeth, or silver/alpaca sheeth.) The small knife is called verijero, because its carried above the "verija" (crotch), it was used for eating, cooking, leather work, castrating animals and such. We also used to carry a staff, but it was a spear, the tip was in the shape of a crescent, which the gauchos used to cut the tendons of cattle they were hunting I must say, the gaucho was a semi-nomadic horseman, his needs were a bit different from a highlander, but still our Cultures share many similarities
