B & A Talks ACTUALLY, blacksmiths work very hard to grip their hammers very lightly, otherwise you get tendinitis and can't swing a hammer. I personally probably squeeze harder giving a hand shake than I hold a hammer... NOW THE TONG HAND, that's crazy strong, vise grip, literally.

I have worked in a "medieval" forge in Messkirch, Germany were they try to build a monestary from a plan made in 832 somewhere in Switzerland with the tools and methods available at that time (a project similar to the one in Guidelon were they are building fort using methods from 1400 ish) We fitted knife tangs by heating them up in the forge for a short time and pushing them into the wood Then they would be 'glued' into the wood with from spruce or fin resin

Have you ever tried fitting the handle to the tang by heating up the tang and burn fitting it? Seems a bit easier than filing it to fit, also files can take more material than expected whereas burn fitting narrows it down to less chance of messing up.

A tip for holding something like the silver plate - burnish masking tape to both surfaces so it sticks nicely then glue the masking tape together. Gives a strong bond that is still removable. Used it on CNC for wood and aluminium before, so if you keep the feed rate low it shouldn't bee too much of a problem.

Why don't you heat up the tang and then press fit the handle to the knife? The hot tang will create a perfect fit in the handle since the wood will "burn away".
@eddiewyc21757 жыл бұрын
Jens Karlsson Can create dust in the handle, thus the epoxy/glue won't bond the tang to the wood. It will bond the tang to the dust.
@davidsandlin96867 жыл бұрын
Fat Boo you ain't joking. As soon as someone tries either the judges start getting nervous.

You also run the risk of taking the temper in an unwanted direction if you over heat the blade, almost like a normalizing cycle. And African Blackwood needs alot of heat to burn.

Dylan Strawn a 1:1 scale Thors hammer (Mjolnir) is probably gonna weigh a shed load, 2 handed lifting and no swinging at all job surely?
@WyldeWoodworks7 жыл бұрын
Thats the point. Only alec could actually swing it. Besides he's never used the full capasity of his forge.
@DaddyBear30007 жыл бұрын
Nope, he couldn't lol. In solid metal it would probably weigh around 30kg or more and in the form of a hammer the leverage would make it feel like 45+kg. Man At Arms made it using thick plate steel and even that was crazy heavy.
@WyldeWoodworks7 жыл бұрын
Karl Harris you're right my math puts it right at 32 kilograms or 72 pounds. That's why it needs to be done! if no one can lift it or use it that makes it even better. Wouldn't that be awesome? Or should I say "FANTASTIC!"
