Everyone is talking about the Darien gap in real life. The way you could've seen it in-game is that impassable land borders are blue, rather than red or black. See the Himalayas or the Alps for prime examples.

In 1881, the US President was one James. A Garfield (yes really), who is sadly most famous for being assassinated just 6 months after being inaugurated. Pretty sad, actually, the man was a real rags to riches American Dream story, born poor in a log cabin in Ohio and managed to become a lawyer and Congressman. In this timeline, maybe the assassination was caused by discontent from losing the war?

Actually Oregon is from the Spanish "orejón" ("big ear"), so it remaining Oregon isn't completely unbelievable. The Mexican border was actually far further north than many think, it even included a part of southwest Wyoming.

Santa Anna was captured after the battle of San Jacinto when he fled in a corporal’s uniform. The Alamo was a pyrrhic victory for the Mexicans that, along with the Goliad Massacre, rallied Texians in Sam Houston’s army before the battle of San Jacinto. The battle was more like a slaughter because the Mexican army was split into 3/4 parts moving through East Texas and the attack took place during a siesta, with improper sentries placed by the Mexican army allowing the Texians to arrive at the camp almost unnoticed. Also, the picture in the “Santa Anna captured” event is Santa Anna surrounded by the Texian army with Sam Houston injured on the ground. The army wanted to hang him and Houston is quoted as saying “No, you’ll settle for blood. I want Texas.”

I do not have any optimization mods. It just runs pretty well on my pc for whatever reason. It still takes over 8 hours to do a play through but nowhere near as slow as your game runs.
