I've been practicing metal shaping for a couple of years now, but time and time again, I ruin my material and fail. At the brink of losing hope, I see this video and am once again inspired and awe struck. Thank you for being my inspiration these past few years, and I hope to one day become as skilled as you are.

As always Eric, you vids never fail to capture the raw art, craftsmanship, and time that it takes for each piece. Its amazing how the song of the hammer seems to blend with the melody. I'd love to see you do a historical Norman helm someday.

Just keep creating, don't give up. Always keep what you consider ruined projects so you won't forget what happened. A good artisan is never completely satisfied with the final result, there is always a part that could have been better. That's what starts you working on the next project. Have patience, it's a life long endeavour.

Excellent work. I have a slightly different sallet/bevor combo based off of an Al Tadesca set currently in a German museum. Fixed visor on the sallet, but a nice falling bevor.

One of these days, I'm going to have you make a nice gothic armet/close helm, similar to that on the set of Germanic armour in The Kremlin Armoury. My sallets are fantastic, but just not the safest things to joust in unless I put Perf-plate in the visor slot.

Very nice Eric. Its always interesting to see you work. Its different than my methods, and likely better. As you know, I drill instead of punch, shear instead of saw, and work mostly cold. The end result is much the same though.

According to the conversion chart I have, 18g is app. 1.2mm is that correct? Would you recommend starting out with thinner steel to practise on?
@ArmureDube11 жыл бұрын
18g would be perfect to practice.

you kow wat is sad? this is amazing work for these times but back when this was a functiopning tool of war there was armor so grand and beutifully colored and gild with gold or silver or wut not that makes this kinda look like a blank canvas
@w0t3rdog7 жыл бұрын
chris henderson whether they were blank or decorated hugely depended on current fashion. And fashion differed, time and place.

would they use thicker sheets of metal in the medieval age?
@ESherwood2210 жыл бұрын
No.
@randyrandy246010 жыл бұрын
Bu- But you do know they didn't have sheets of metal. Right?
@Carlzday9 жыл бұрын
+Randy Breadbox blacksmiths made their own steel plate with poured molten iron over a flat surface--adding varying amounts of carbon to make a steel of varying strengths --blacksmiths were renowned for their ability to make a light weight armour while not compromising the strength and durability
@Carlzday9 жыл бұрын
+Kartoffel Könirg ...no fucking shit sherlock,,, do you even know what a smelting pot is?? it's a pot they melted iron ore in -- they melt the iron ore in the SMELTING pot -- iron ore is basically a rock with lots of iron, as well as other impurities like sulfur, chlorine, from the salts and other shit ..once the molten remove the mate -- Matte is a term used referring to the molten metal sulfide phases typically formed during the smelting of nickel copper or other base metals. Typically, a matte is the phase in which the principal metal being extracted is recovered prior to a final reduction process to produce a crude metal. Molten mattes are insoluble in both slag and metal phases. This insolubility, combined with differences in specific gravities between mattes, slags, and metals, allows for separation of the molten phases ... then they. add carbon -- generally in the form of a petroleum, they did this by quenching the hot metal in a pot containing oil -- by doing so, it added added the carbon -- by quenching the metal in water .. . it tempered the metal by cooling the outside faster than the inside it creates stress differentials -- the difference between steel and iron is the carbon content
