I'm not sure if it has already been mentioned in the previous video (episode 1) comments; the actor playing Ishido is Mariko's father in Monarch. Most of the main Japanese casts are really famous actors in Japan who have a been cast in Hollywood movies as well.

By way of explanation - A flux is a flow of something. Blackthorne and his ship are privateers, mercenaries, fighting for Holland. Holland is at war with Spain to throw off Spanish rule. Spain is in alliance with Portugal so they are targets as well. They don't want to recognize a rebel government which would be the effect of acknowledging the Letters of Marque, hence calling Blackthorne a pirate. The big difference in 1600 was Protestant churches didn't recognize the Pope in Rome as Head of the Church. Some made huge changes in the religion while the Anglican Church of England made few changes since Henry VIII only wanted a divorce not great change in the religion. He made England's monarch the head of the church which Charles III is today. The show is set 12 years after the Spanish Armada tried to invade England to depose Protestant Queen Elizabeth I. Phillip II had been married to Queen Mary, the elder sister of Elizabeth. She had been Catholic but remained the ruling monarch of England instead of her husband. Phillip didn't want to recognize Protestant Elizabeth as queen. Elizabeth was keen to help Protestant rulers resisting imposition of Catholic rulers.

Macao was not a secret base, it was a gift from the emperor of the Ming Dinasty for fighting japanese pirate who were raiding the South China sea. Before that, the portuguese took a brutal military campaing of the conquest of the Indian Ocean for the domination of the Silk and Spice trade routs. When we took the soultenade of Malaca , the chinese took notice of our presence, at first they looked at us with distruss. The emperor declared thet commerce with the portuguese would be closed therefore illegal. However some traders chosse to do commerce of the books, like smugling, at some point the assualts of japanses pirates bother also the portuguese, so we took the fight to them...and that was when the emperor notice that would be best to legalize and open mercade with the portuguese. Macao was given to the portuguese for trade and commerce, in exchange we would hlep to secure the South seas of China.

One slight oversight - England & Portugal have never been at war. They have one of the longest alliances in history - 700(ish) years, I believe. But the show's so damned good, we'll let 'em get away with it.
