I thought the costume designer could have done better with Blackthorne. He was a European mariner of the 1600s, an age when England was just barely out of the Dark Ages. In Episode 1, he was shown as a rough, bearded, long-haired and bedraggled seaman. Sea life was basic, dirty and terrible in those centuries, more so in privateer ships. I thought the series should have him slowly become refined as he learned the finer culture of the Japanese, but no, one episode, he was a dirty ruffian, and the next, bathed and gotten a haircut, he looks like a modern-day well-fed white man with very unlike seaman behaviour. That was actually a key narrative in the James Clavell's novel: Blackthorne/Anjin-san had to learn and adapt in the more subtle (and not necessarily less dangerous) ways of the Japanese. And, to me, the ultimate way in which he embraced the Japanese way was when he willingly commits to do seppuku-now, that's one character arc for you.

Shōgun became the first Japanese-language series to win a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. It is the most awarded single season of television in Emmy history. William Adams, the historical figure which the character John Blackthorne was based on, spoke a number of languages, including Portuguese. The Shogun's office is called Bakufu meaning "tent office", it roughly translates to "field headquarters". In diplomatic correspondence, a shogun is also called Taikun meaning "great leader" (this is Sino-Japanese etymology of the English word "tycoon"). The Ring of Fire is a string of volcanoes and sites of seismic activity, or earthquakes, as well as tsunamis (large cresting waves) around the edges of the Pacific Ocean, where Japan falls inside said ring. This activity has to do with the convergence of five tectonic plates which move under, over or past each other during such activity. Dysentery, also known as the bloody flux and camp fever, was a very common and significant concern to both Europe and North America. Dysentery is a type of gastroenteritis that causes bloody diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, and a feeling of incomplete defecation. It's caused by the gram-negative bacterium Shigella dysenteriae, which spreads quickly in unsanitary conditions. Elizabeth I was Queen of England and Ireland during this time period. Leprosy, now known as Hansen's disease, is an age-old disease and is described in the literature of ancient civilizations. It is an infectious disease that causes severe, disfiguring skin sores and nerve damage in the arms, legs, and around your body as well as the lungs and eyes. It is spread by airborne respiratory droplets (coughs or sneezes) which contain the bacteria. Leprosy is curable and treatment in the early stages through the use of multi-drug prophylactics. Left untreated, the disease may cause progressive and permanent disabilities. In some cases, leprosy was so virulent the stricken were placed in leper colonies like Molokai in Hawaii or Carville, Louisiana on the United States mainland. Shogun takes place between the near end of the Warring States period or Sengoku Jidai and the beginning of the Edo Period or the Tokugawa Shogunate. Samurai meaning is servant. They actually called themselves bushi, meaning warrior. Hiroyuki Sanada performed his own stunts. Hatamoto translates to 'near the banner' or 'under the banner' due to their literal positioning to their lord in battle, closest by their side and the last line of defense. But this closeness also applied off the battlefield and signified a strong trust in all matters. It essentially means advisor to a potentate, or even a high-ranking samurai, in areas such diplomacy, trade, foreign policy, and battlefield tactics. William Adams, the historical basis for Blackthorne, began as an advisor to Tokugawa on diplomacy and trade. But eventually he earned the title of Hatamoto, giving him a lot of influence when it came to foreign policy. As Portugal was not as populous or militaristic as Spain, it generally did not conquer indigenous populations or even create colonies with the goal of settling them - the Portuguese instead operated many feitorias (fortified trading posts) in coasts around the world in Brazil, the west coast of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope, western India, southern China, and finally in the artificial port of Dejima in Nagasaki. The Japanese received the Portuguese with much suspicion, especially as the Portuguese were interested not only in trading with the Japanese, but converting the Japanese to Christianity. The spread of Christianity to Japan would cause much social turmoil and political discontent, as the Shogun and many daimyo considered the new religion to be a threat to their authority and Japanese traditions, and did their utmost to exterminate it. Eventually, the Portuguese were expelled, but Japan had since been opened to limited European trade, and the Portuguese were soon replaced with the Dutch, who made no attempt to proselytize and restricted their interactions with the Japanese to trade. Cathay is an older name for China. The wives of the samurai were trained to protect the home and village when the samurai warriors were away at battle. The Samurai carried two swords: Katana (long sword) and Wakizashi (mid sword). The Katana was used by foot soldiers, and provided a longer reach to initiate and prevent attacks, while the Wakizashi (pronounced wa-kee-za-she) is a shorter sword that is primarily used in close combat situations, especially indoors. Moreover, Wakizashi was used as a backup in case the katana became unusable, and to commit seppuku if necessary. A third worn weapon, the Tanto (dagger) was employed for combat and seppuku as well. The generic names for the Katana and Wakizashi are called Daito (long sword) and Shoto (short sword), and worn together they are called Daisho (long and short). Traditionally, the home of the Emperor is considered the capital. From 794 through 1868, the Emperor lived in Heian-kyo, modern-day Kyoto. After 1868, the seat of the Government of Japan and the location of the Emperor's home was moved to Edo, which it renamed Tokyo.

This new “re-adaptation” miniseries also did not disappoint as I have the entire soundtrack, and have listened to it a lot. My thoughts precisely. I think music is such a forgotten concept in media, almost an afterthought. My theory is that it’s probably just easier and more cost effective to simply license a couple random songs that loosely fit a vibe or theme. That being said, when a work has great and original music, you can tell they put a lot of heart into it! Same goes for things like video games. Ghost of Tsushima, Batman: Arkham games, etc all have fantastic music and it makes a world of difference

One thing that made this show other than its attention to detail so exciting to watch is the unravelling of multiple plots which were based from real events. I guess what people are very interested in are old narratives being debunked and how even japanese people themselves never thought had really happened being shown on screen with the world as they watch each episode, are giving them a new perspective and insights, connecting the dots that led to who, what and where they are now, and why the world is what they are right now. Truly universal in every possible angle of understanding by anyone watching this epic show.

My oh my how I love this intro. A Zen garden - peace. Sharp notes in the calm music exerting a peaceful time. Major notes for hope. The garden is revealed to be the sea, and a ship is seen on the horizon - music takes a minor turn. A foreign ship - perhaps Portuguese, Dutch or British. Things are getting tense as the ship is tearing through the shogunate's crest. The Japanese fleet have no choice but to retaliate, departing from the shore. Music is now outright ominous - almost flat notes only. The Osaka castle - the cradle where decisions are made, where everyone's interests are at stake, where everything happens. But whatever happens next, it's not good - the music warns us so. Sure enough, the organised pattern in the garden is being wiped - the peace is disturbed. The castle is collapsing under attack. Fire arrows in the crimson sky - this is war. Who will take power next? The cradle is now gone and its ruins reveal the helmet, the symbol of power - it is the dawn of the new shogun. Literal chills!

Love that the taiko drums are used in this theme. I loved the original Shogun, as it was true to the book, but new version is just as good~ especially the last episode which was emotional to say the least.

Nah this show has Game of Thrones potential. Love that they speak Japanese which ironically might be what "holds" it back to some people. I even think when they are speaking "English" as Portuguese it should've been Portuguese as well but I get why they didnt. Go watch this.

As someone who didn’t watch parasite due to its subtitle heaviness, I am completely hooked on this show.
