In Chinese styles there are many "flowery" techniques. Some consider them useless or purely aesthetic techniques, but Master Liang Yi Quan said that in Shaolin there are no useless techniques.
"Five flowers embracing the tiger's head" is a concept of Shaolin Pao Chui rich in martial applications.

As a "traditional" karateka I am amazed by your videos, which I have been viewing for some time. What amazes (and pleases) me is the connection I see between what we do. Although on the surface they at times appear different a closer look shows the similarities. Regardless, the principles are the same. I see so many applications that apply to what we are doing in our kata but are not readily visible. Seeing some of these applications in your forms makes me say.. "ah ha!" As I get older (66) and my practice continues to evolve, it at the same time goes backwards. It also becomes more internal. While constant improvement is what I strive for, at the same time I find that the way to do this is quite often by going backwards and looking back to the beginning. "In order to move forward, we must look backward" As the say in Japan, we must maintain "Shoshin" (beginners mind). Thank you.

in chinese 不要忘初心. Japanese karate's origins are from Shaolin Nanquan ( South Shaolin Boxing). With Japanese karate here I mean the traditional okinawan style because it's where real karate was born. Karate we know nowadays as Japanese style karate is the result of a standardization and codification process made by the master Funakoshi Gichin during the Meiji Restauration Era (1868-1912) because the emperor wanted to create a Japanese nationalized style for everything including martial arts.

You must had a really good Sifu back when you were young. Really impressive as every move you did, I can see there is a "steady and firm" movement on you. Not to mention your teaching your student was really clear and easy to understand. I also trained a little bit of an less "popular" Chinese martial art like Pak Mei from the Deng Zhou Tak lineage. A Southern Chinese style external martial art, where it also focus on standing firm and fist.

Traditional Shaolin do not exist anymore in China why? First because the Fukien temple has been destroyed in the 16th. Survivors flied away or hide. After the burning were the foreign colonisation, the boxer rebellion, then Mao who was against religion and dismantled even the inoffensive Henan temple. Only few decades away the CCP realised that foreigners mostly cause of Bruce Lee were interested by Chinese arts so they decided to hire national wushu athletes and send them in the monastary. That's why you can find some true Thieu Lam / Shaolin in Vietnam, and find traces in southeast Asia. However, Hung gar, choy lee fut, mo gar, are coming from Shaolin but teach only few parts of it. Mao, the red army, the long march marked the end of traditional martial arts in China except Taichi since it was seen as a prophylactic gymnastic for elders.

Ciao Emiliano, negli anni ottanta, al tempio di Shaolin, c'era ancora "solo" quello tradizionale. Ho assistito personalmente all'incontro fra il Maestro Men Huifeng di Pechino ed il Maestro Liang Yiquan di Shaolin a proposito di una futura standardizzazione dello Shaolin... era l'estate del 1988.
