仙台簞笥は、江戸時代末期以降、仙台藩の地場産業として成長しました。木目が浮かび上がる木地呂（きじろ）塗りに豪華な金属製の飾り金具が施されていることが特徴です。
Sendai chests originated as part of the local Sendai-han industry in the final years of the Edo era (1603-1868). The kijiro-nuri wood treatment that brings out the woodgrain and the deluxe metal fittings that adorn the chests are distinctive features of this craft.

Japanese people still spend the money to buy these beautiful things, otherwise the craft will be lost. Looking at the metal worker and thinking that all the Tinkers are now gone and their craft lost. Ironic that the thing that replaced them, plastic, is now going to be got rid of. Who can make a quart can nowadays?
