I know what stuff is new vs old - I keep an eye on the old and as soon as the texture color or smell changes it gets binned. It takes a seriously long time to go off though! I just threw out some lipsticks from a few years back, they last well in a heat controlled room in good storage

Cosmetic Companies and experts push earlier dates then necessary because they get you to buy the product quicker. And honestly it depends on how often you are using the product, like mascara.
