Shade Garden Plantings: Hellebores, a Shade-Loving Container, and Grasses

The shade bed between two of the trees in my west yard has always been a bit of a trouble spot. So I recently decided to make the bed bigger and fill it with hosta! Give it a year or two, and this bed will be bursting with shade-loving green growth!

Another informative video! Just to let you know I bought a hosta from Home Depot maybe 10 years ago. It's grown over the years and today right now it's about 5 feet wide against a fence and makes bloom stalks about 6 feet and it's in FULL SUN. I occasionally water it. It's really remarkable. Each leaf twice the size of my hand.

I split a hosta and day lily a couple of years ago into 4 hostas and 3 lilys. They've done so well that I could probably split them again next spring.

Great choices! I love to poke a varigated "Alaska" nasturtium seed in the pot after I'm done planting. They do well in part shade too. The round leaves are just such a nice contrast!

I'm the opposite regarding hosta flower. I'm not fond of them. I have the green with white edge hosta. What started out as 3 neighbor's plants around 10 yrs ago... now is approx. 25 and around the place I now live. And could be double or triple that if I divided them. They're a great filler. and they were free! :-) I'm doing mostly begonias and purple petunias. Because the purple is a great color and swells wonderful. I'm an Iowan too and yes we are blessed with great soil. Just wish our season was longer.

I live in NW Arkansas and have those same hosta’s. Granted I’m on the border of zone 6a/b but mine do get close to 6’. If you haven’t you MUST come to Crystal Bridges. The grounds are amazing.
