I could be wrong, but I believe the diagram and reference @3:35 shows panels in series and not parallel. Your observations and measurements are correct, based on your panels being wired in series. Series (- +, - +, - +). Parallel (+ + +) = + (- - -) = -

Wow I knew there was a drop, but didn't know it was that much. The diode works because the potential (difference) in the panel voltage drops below that of the circuit and this reverses the flow once the voltage/current is lower. It's a shame ita not made into the panels at a cell level as this can cost pennies and resolve a big problem.

Thanks for watching. Yeah, maybe in time. The bigger split panels handle shading better. Was going to talk about them. But people switch off and the video gets pushed less from the YT Algorithms.

@@SolarPowerChannelwithChris I'm no panel expert, but from what I gather, the panel acts like a led if it's reversed and that's why they lose power. I suspect large panels are simply due to higher voltage to over come.the resistance??

Yeah my REC Alpha Pure Black panels have three built-in bypass diodes to handle shade. Still used microinverters because they're slightly more efficient even without shade and no single point of failure... but modern full size panels can themselves handle some shade without cutting the output of the whole array.

I want to become self-sufficient on power my house faces east/west any ideas. I was going to start by becoming self sufficient on charging gadgets then move onto bigger things!!!

Yeah, I do to, check these out. Just been reading about them www.pv-magazine.com/2021/10/04/photovoltaic-plus-boiler-solution-from-germany/ Wire solar panels straight to the hot water heater. There are other systems but these look so simple! For your kitchen hot water and shower. Let me know if you build anything to come more off the grid! The first easy thing would be the house lights I think. Not that they use any power these days and cost nothing to run, think it's more of the fun of it!

Your solar mounts can be mounted sideways tipping the panels in the right direction. If you have space you can put the panels on a tracker frame which is on the ground.

if i have 12 panels and my chimney on roof hide my last 3 panels like on 2pm or 3 till sunset and i m making my panels 6x6 in series what should be best solution for best efficiency and output series or parallel ? or make 4x4x4 ? or 2x2x2x2 ? im confused

Hello, there are solutions for this, your installer can advice on which is best. The good quality solar panels have diodes inside to prevent current reversal. You can now buy split panels too which are designed for shade, I would recommend looking at these. If you are grid tie you can also fit micro inverters to the back of each panel, this removes having one large inverter. Micro inverters are good for shade. With a large array you would connect in series, this is high volts and low current. You would never parallel connect of this size, the current would be massive with low volts. (why energy companies shift massive volts around the country, keeps the cables smaller gauge.)

Same kind of thing. Big solar panels have diodes in to limit the current reversal. You will now see split panels, these are best for shade. But yes series panels are affected too. But the diodes help. Micro inverters are also used. So each panel produces grid tie power, rather than one big inverter across the whole array. These help with shade too.
