I can pick up those engines for about £200 in the UK, that’s a stationary engine, probably off a rotivator or to run a pump on a farm. You can tell because of the cooling fins on the head being across instead of being forwards.

Make sure to visit The National Motorcycle Museum near Birmingham and Triumph Manufacturing Plant tour. They both have great history in them an they're not far from each other. Another way to test if their's a bad diode, is to set the DVOM on volts A/C dirctly on the battery w/eng. running. Any A/C volts over 0.5 volts A/C is an indication of a bad diode(s). This test method also is valid on automobiles & Trucks.. yes lets not for get the trucks or busses. You can also test the stator w/the DVOM set on volts A/C. Just unplug the connection to the regulator/rectifier and connect the leads to the 2 of the 3 stator wires, you shold get 24 to 36 volts A/C, if you can ck mfg. specks. Moreover, back to testing, remove one of the two leads & connect to the 3 stator lead, if results good. then remove the lead the other lead and connect to the first disconnected stator lead [ this ritual is to test all 3 possible stator combinations ] if also good than the stator is good. This procedure if for a 3 phase. if it's a mono-phase/single-phase stator, you only need to test two of the leads and your done.
