4 years of Honda school and the only carbs they ever had us work on were Magna/Sabre carbs. When we asked the instructor he said they were the most complex set-up Honda ever built. He said if you can master working on these you can fix anything.

DRUNK UNCLE RONNIE????? Well that was and still is me. In 1981 I was given the nickname of Ronster the Monster and in 2004 I found an immaculate 1983 V65 MAGNA in a garage and I bought it for $1500.00. A new battery and fresh gas, a couple duffel bags with some duds and I hopped on and circled the USA on her. What a highway gobbler she was. Her sweet spot was at 130 MPH and I burned many a mile behind me at that speed. It took me three months and 13000 miles to complete the most fun "BAR HOP" I could ever have. I loved that Bike. I sold it in 2010 for $500.00 and was sad to see her go. Now in 2024 I am about to turn 70 years old and I have owned a motorcycle every day of my life since I was 15. Sometimes as many as 9 at a time all ready to fire up and ride. Currently I have three, but none of them were as fast or dependable as my V65.I loved that biker! Ronster

I'm loving the videos on the v65's . I bought a new magna in 1984 and loved it, got it home and my wife wanted to take it off for a ride, mins you the biggest bike she had rode was her 500 !!! She was gone for a lot longer than I thought she should have, and I thought did I kill her ??? She came back with the biggest smile under her helmet !!! Missing the bike . Thanks again for the video. My first true road bike was an 84 saber 700. That v4 engine was a work of art that has the smoothest power band of anything I have owned since. Mine looked exactly like the one in this video just the 700 version.

I'm a Honda guy, had a CB750 and a Nighthawk S ( 700cc ). A buddy of mine had a V65 Magna with a shield and it was everything that a Quickest Bike should be. Jay Davidson jockeyed one into the 10s back then and set a record.

I know I"m not in the same league with you guys with the bigger motors, but I do love my little cb500f which is the only bike I can afford right now. I would say that is an impressive bike for an old classic from Honda V65. I wouldn't mind upgrading to a bigger cc bike that is a inline four. Honda is so expensive, and I don't really want the cbr. I like upright naked sport like cbfs.

Had a 84 Nighthawk S and I am certain that the CB700sc is the best motorcycle ever produced. Except for the design of the clutch pushrod system. Like why not a c-clip over the bushing? Why do I have to take the output cover off? Do you understand how much of a pain in the ass that is 1980s Honda engineer? Do you, have you ever had to do it? Huh 1980s Honda engineer.

An 84/85 V65 Sabre is the best value in motorcycles out there. When they're running and maintained they are great mileage crunching machines for less than $2000. They don't handle the best and they are heavy but in some skilled hands they can run with all but the best of the sport bike crowd. Yes they were the cream of the crop back in the day, they're still are an exciting ride even today. I've restored several sabres, a dozen or so magnas and still own a couple of each. There's nothing out there today that gets my blood pressure up like an old school motorcycle. People are shocked when they hear that they have 121 hp, adjustable forks/shock, shaft drive, overdrive, three disc brakes, electric fuel pumps, self cancelling turn signals, electronic ignition, gear indicator, temp and fuel gauges and a clock! My magna and sabre both have about 80,000 miles, will run strong all day and don't burn any oil. The one thing they sacrificed on was that rectangular head light. It looks great on the bike but its severely lacking at night. If you're going to go hooligan at night, you'd better know the road well because you will outrun the headlight coverage very quickly.

My first brand new bike was 1985 V65 Sabre. It was a beast. Redline in 5th gear was 150 indicated. Shift in OD and she’d slow down. (Cracked the front fork brace). I rode it like I stole it for 18 months and sold it. Wish I had one today

I’ve owned several since 2012, one thing I came to learn quickly, especially after one caught fire is to never let these things sit, there are very few people that even know how to work on them if you can’t do the work yourself

I'm enjoying my second 1984 V65 Sabre which I got as a $300. basket case three years ago(it took me 8 months to put together because it's not easy to find parts for a 40 year old bike!). My first was in the mid 90's and they were/are the same base colors as this one. My first one came with the factory "Honda Line Fairing" which made a serious difference in the top speed(rated 177 mph). I hit 150 mph shifting into 6th gear @ 9000 rpm and decided I didn't need to know how fast it could go! On a bike that redlines at 10,000 rpm I never forgot it! I'm 30 years older now but it makes me forget how old I am when I ride it which is sparingly and with much more restraint than I had on my first. A rare "super Bike" even by todays standards!

I will never forget buying my 84 V65 Sabre from a guy in wheeling, IL. The bike was the dark brown color scheme with the full front fairing. I believe I paid 1500.00, he even let me use his pickup truck to get it home. He kept telling me to understand what this bike is and to read up on it. This is no beginners bike, it will f_cking kill ya he said multiple times. I sent the carbs out to a guy I found on ebay. Reinstalled carbs with new rubber boots. The pull was amazing. One night coming home from work going down Ogden Ave from Pilsen I smoked a kid on a gsx. I would literally feel like I was slipping off the seat!! Hope to see ya in Daytona!

In the mid 1980s I owned the V45 / 698cc version of that Saber. Mine had dealer installed frame mounted Hondaline 3/4 fairing and Vetter suitcase saddle bags. While having less power than the V65 mine was a screamer too. I would routinely ride it from Fort Bragg, NC to Denver, Colorado in under 24 hours to visit my girlfriend. I would cruise it at 115 mph. It had the Federally mandated 85mph speedometer so I calculated speed from the tachometer. Mine did have a scary wobble in curves between 70 and 80 mph so I would hold my speed to 65 until it was safe to ride 85. I still loved the bike. But after I had it a couple of years I traded it in on a Class C camper to live in while in the Army to get out of the barracks. I shortly later bought a 1970s Kawasaki Z900 that was fun too but it didn't hold a candle to the V45.

I've owned three Sabres. Two v45's and a v65. The v65 really was a beast! Carbs were a pain to remove the first couple of times, but gets easier once you get the knack. The plastic fuel tubes between the carbs are bad for cracking out as they age.

PFFFT! In the UK we were riding Kawasaki Z1000 variants and they pissed all over these things. The V4 Hondas of this era had terrible oil flow issues - the Sabre and the V750F were known for their "chocolate camshafts." My mate had a Sabre - it spent much of the time in my garage whilst I wrenched on the unreliable tart.

Hah! I don’t believe any KZ1000 ever pissed all over a V65 engined bike. But they did have known top end oiling problems. Another known issue with the V65 was second gear issues.

I took my V65 Sabre out today, actually. Just for a short ride, 60 miles. I have mine since 2004 and it is my second one. I love them. You focus in this video on the power of the thing, which it has in bucket loads, but it is a very comfortable tourer as well. Because of the power you can ride it with very low revs and it picks up in any gear. The V4 is silky smooth and will happily run at just 2500rpm. On my first one I did several holiday trips, to the south of France, up to the north of Scotland (I’m from the Netherlands), with a load of luggage on it. I is a beast, but a very gentle one. And extremely reliable. Mine just had a carb rebuilt and that is it. It has now 84000km (52000miles) on the clock.

Years ago when I was in NAVY AOCS (An Officer And A Gentleman) after a certain point we went on what was called "The Beer Run"... Maybe 5 miles, then we got to hang and talk with the drill instructors and classroom instructors like normal folks... and drink beer. One of the instructors got plastered and when it came time to leave he jumped on a V65 Sabre. I knew it was going to be entertaining. He left with the rear tire smoking and went everyway but upside down and backwards! It was hilarious and terrifying!

In '86 my bud sold me his V65 Magna to get the Sabre. Both were rockets. Once he got it we were flying together. I maxed out the magna, aprx 130ish mph. He looked at me, smiled and left me in the dust. We kept both bikes until we both, individually, got married. Young and dumb and lucky to still be here to tell the story. We both have HD Ultras now. LOVE to cruz!!!!!

I really liked my 1982 Kawasaki GPZ 750. Race cam, 36mm smooth bore carbs, Yoshimura header, race pegs, front fork stabilizer, Dunlop Sport Elite skins. Fun bike !

Well, I'd point out that the VMAX was both squirly and powerful. I had one and inadvertent throttle grabs always rendered fishtailing. The Magna handled better but it also had a lot of power, both bikes were definitely in the "no beginner category."

Bought a new V65 Sabre in college. Installed Nighthawk 700s bars and raised forks in triples Made a huge improvement in handling/riding position. Eventually moved on to a ST1100, then ST1300. Love the V4s!

In 1986 I walked into a Harley shop to buy new bike. They straight up would not sell me one because I was only 16. They told me to go to Honda down the street. I paid cash for my v65 I put 145,000 miles on that bike! I loved that bike.

Bought an 85 v45 in 2006 for $600. Shifting fork was bent so it kicked out if 6th gear sometimes but you didn't need 6th gear. Was my first bike and taught me a lot about motorcycles

Have a 1984 v65 sabre and a 1989 vmax both like new condition. The sabre has a few things the vmax doesnt. Overdrive, fuel gauge,temp guage.Dual horn lol 😂. Adjustable front suspension [dampening].And bigger gas tank,also self canceling turn signals.good luck and enjoy.

Has one in 84. It was a great wheelie machine. Was working at a Honda dealership was riding a Yamaha still as I worked at a Yamaha dealership 1st. It was a fast bike lots of torque. By 85 I was once again working at the Yamaha dealership. Service a new V-Max for a customer figured it would be equal to the V65 engine had a surprise coming. The Yamaha had more power everywhere. Put my Sabre up for sale within a month.

A beast, could break loose the rear anytime I went full throttle to pass some granddad on a cruise to Tim Hortons. I owned an '85 V-65 Sabre for 10 years, and it made horsepower and torque exponentially as you twisted the throttle. Real problem is, there is no factory wind protection, so once you get above 100 mph, the wind wants to throw you off. Would love to see Honda bring this back with an aluminum frame, and factory wind protection, and some hotter cams, man that would be crazy fun. Regardless, it put a smile on my face every time i rode it.

I rebuilt one of these back in the late 2000s. I remember on the first test ride how ridiculous it was and then later that day discovered that it was only running on 3 cylinders. Once it was running on all 4 is was a mad man. Since the Nighthawk 750 was my daily ride, the Sabre was very intimidating at full twist.

Having one of these back in the early 90's and then having it shipped to London when I was stationed over there, this video makes me really miss that bike. Riding around London in 1995 with this monster was crazy. First, if you ride over there you know it's a bit mental. Second, being on a bike whose displacement surpassed many cars at the time was even more mental. And I think it looks better with the stock black chrome twin pipes, and it sounded amazing too.

I graduated in 1983, These V4 Honda's were king of the cruisers and little else could match there acceleration. I've owned 2 1100 Magna's over the years and sold my last one about 10 years ago. Kawasaki eliminator 900, Yamaha V Max were also highly sought after muscle bikes in the 80"s

I've owned like 4-5 v65 sabres and a 700 sabre, all but 1 v-65 that i bought never needed the motor pulled to fix the infamous 2nd gear and 5th/overdrive issues. i send the gearsets out to have them back cut the engagement dogs on the gears, even developed a method to rebuild the stock unrebuildable rear shock. They are great bikes aside from the handlebar design, i swap them out for a wider more comfortable set. I've gotten older to the point where its difficult for me to swing a leg over the bike anymore, sticking to low seat height cruisers until i can't ride anymore.

I sometimes check the exhaust manifolds with a heat gun to see if any carbs are running lean or not firing on any cylinders.

FYI... Use some rubber cement to tack gaskets in place. Red grease works but it eliminates burnt oil residue. East, cheep and actually makes a better seal on paper gadgets..

I bought one of these new and had it for 25 years or so. It was an amazing bike. BTW, they had issue with the temperature probe in the radiator.. I hot wired the fan with a switch early on and used it that way for years. I traveled all over the country on that bike. I would love to have one again.

Hey Mr. Shade tree. I love that V65. I rescued a V45 Saber a couple of years ago from laying in the dirt behind a shed. Check it out when you get a chance. You might see something I did to help you with those bikes. Had it on my channel for a long time. And boy those bikes can be difficult to work on. 16:28 I am not scared of working on them anymore. Plus I I have owned a v35 magna which is very rare.

Bought my '83 in '85 with 5,000 miles. Scary power 140 mph. Don't speed shift. Missing the shift between 1st and 2nd can damage the shifting forks. I made that mistake . So 2nd gear isn't easy to get to, Make shure you fully engage the clutch from 1st to 2nd. I did tons of 2 up riding with a pretty 18 yr. old, natural blonde, with blues eyes and big hair. 🎼🎵🎶 "And we were rockin', rockin' into the night" (.38 Special) doing an easy 80 mph. My V65 Sabre had the maroon stripe. Very classy looking. But a mean mother... never had a breakdown always fired right up everytime. I put Metzler's on her in ’86 and it was 100% better handling than the stock rubber. Especially the front tire. And I loved the rear air shock, too! Good luck.🤘🤘

Had a 85 GS 1150, did the carb upgrade, single air cleaners and a supertrap 4/1. Totally different bike, great powerband. Had a roomie with a v-65 sabre, rode it, while being a little underwhelmed i was thinking how choked those years carbs were. EPA JETS SUCK . Dyna jet kit, ditch the airbox, open the exhaust, that v-65 would be wicked

V65 Sabre very fast, I was 24 years old, I had so much fun on that bike, it is a bike you need to know how to use your brakes because it will get up to speed super quick. I remember it would hit 60 in second gear before you knew what happened.

Not sure if you know but you can change that foot pump bike stand and run air compressor lines and have it on straight air up.

No judgement here but I would always drain the carbs amd draw fresh gas through before spinning it over. Happy it worked out!

I had a VF500F2. Ridiculously quick for a 500. But it did have issues. Poor case hardening on one valve top. It hammered the valve through the collets. Bang! I rebuilt it with a mate’s help. All good after that.

MY VF 45 750 MAGNA WAS APPARANTLY THE LAST ONE OFF THE PRODUCTION LINE. MY WIFE DIED OF CANCER AND I HAD OUT TWO SONS (4&6) TO CARE FOR SO IT WAS SOLD. GROWN AND FLOWN NOW. WOULD LOVE TO HAVE IT BACK NOW AS IT HAD CHARACTER.😊

My friend had a V65 Sabre. I remember down shifting to third and hitting it to pass a semi at 60 mph. As I got around the semi I looked down at the speedo and I was doing 130! It was like “whoa whoa whoa whoa! Slow her down!” lol. It was seriously dangerously quick.

I loved the V65 Magna when it came out but my first child was born in 1983 so I did the right thing and put my 1973 Five Hundred Four in storage. Twenty five years later I took the Five Hundred out of storage but I'd put on 100 pounds so it didn't have the same get-up-and-go I remembered. I found a 1983 V65 Magna and bought it early in 2009. I still have the machine, 52,000 miles on it. Living in rural Maine and on a dirt road the bike is tough on my 71 year old back. If I go out to the barn it will start right up. I've toyed with selling it buy my youngest wants to buy it. She has a 1985 V30 Magna. I think it is too much of a bike for her but the V30 is scary fast too. By the way I did the 4 into 1 years ago with a Kerker setup. It wasn't as difficult as your Sabre install.

I have an'84 V65 Sabre..... What a beast !!!! And, my beautiful wife loves to ride with me !! I have the luggage rack/backrest and a trunk, so we can go places and we just lock up the helmets and her purse

Awesome! I owned a 1984 V45 Magna 700 (tariff beater) and 1982 V45 Sabre 750 some years back and loved them both! Enjoy the V65!

Technically the 700 wasn't a v45 or named a V45. Just VF700s Sabre.

I own a Honda CBX1050 (inline 6 cylinder) and that's a lovely bike (its basically bone stock original). And I've also got an '82 Honda CX500. This Honda Sabre/Magna v65 is more or less like the CX500 in respect of the shaft, but with a V4 and the power of the CBX1050. Safe to say, the Honda Sabre/Magna v65 is my next classic to buy. Thanks for this, beautiful

I have worked on v45 and v65. Carb work is horrendous on seating. We did the oil mod on the v65 to solve upper end oil starvation issue. Hasn't died yet.

My buddy and I took his V65 Magna down to nothing but pieces because he thought he broke something inside the engine. Found nothing, and made it run again. Wasn’t about to do it again with my Saber. Mine was Blue. Dream bike.

I had one just like this back in the early 90s.. had a loud ass 4 into 1 open meg. Probably the fastest bike I've been on until the 2016 v4 aprilia tuono.

My neighbour had a 500 in the 70s, all the dogs on the estate surrounded him after starting it, wagging tales & barking with excitement, then they would chase him while he was trying to kick them away 😂

Well said on the v65, i owned one for 4 years and that thing keeps up with any bike, Guinness world record holder from 84 to 89 i think. Wish i kept mine!
