Thanks Josh for sharing your trip with us. I made a trip from Tampa to Dallas in '08 on a '91 Virago 750. My two week trip turned into three as my bike got worse. My break downs forced me to make up scheduled stops. So I took advantage of the night and met a lot of great people. I even found myself on stage playing guitar at a honky-tonk bar in Mississippi. I rode through two hurricanes and got home in time to shower and head to the airport for a business trip. I wish I would have documented my trip like you are now.

Your 4000 miles across America title suggests you fortunately made it back to FLA on that AMF rattle trap & you obviously survived to tell the story. The end of this segment suggests an " it is what it is" preview of things to come with relying on a shovel head, much lless a sportster version of a shovelhead. Back in the late 60's i bought a '66 Electra Glide & got an unwanted & orphaned 67 Sportster thrown in the deal as a perk for good measure by the seller, A deal too good to be true, both had low mileage & were newer bikes, all for $800. I rode those bikes for a short while between their all to common downtimes. Both those shovel heads were total AMF junk-o- rama. Don't know what i was thinking when i sold my original reliable & great running '38 knuckle & 53 panhead, somehow thinking i was upgrading to a more modern bike because they had electric start. & i cringe to think that both those cool original antique bikes i sold to buy shovelhead junk were likely reduced into mind less, brake less Knuckle/Pan choppers by some torch wielding mental midget or a throw back hack fantasizing on bad drugs in the late 60's. I am happy i got to experience riding the old Harleys riding all over the southwest US back when i was a snot nosed kid & they were affordable and actually functional units. You could ride a long while on those old machines on and off road, with a little mechanical aptitude, some common sense and the patience to keep to the required protocal of a pre ride check for loose stuff before every ride. Harley has come a long way with reliability since the shovelhead.. The weekend warrior outlaw biker wannabe image thing these days is a bit much. Tough guy dentists and lawyers having their identity or mid life crisis, all dressed to the 10's in their new leathers, going unshaven for a whole weekend must scream out freedom to them. At least all motorcycles and their riders are alot more common on the road these days & riders, bikes are far more diverse & socially acceptable then back in those Easy Rider times.

I grew up riding in Las Vegas. Watching you ride around the surrounding canyon roads, especially Red Rock Loop brought back a ton of memories. It's too bad you had to do the Virgin River Gorge run to St. George in the dark... In the daylight, it's a beautiful drive with rainbows of red & orange colored canyon walls, & beautifully banked corners. Poor Shovley... Can't wait for the next episode!

It is a hell of a thing sometimes to ride a bike up over a pass then drop down the other side, get a glimpse of the land through descending canyons all the way out to a valley thousands of feet below and across that for a hundred miles. Those images imprint in your mind and soul. You carry them with you forever. It's beautiful in a way you never forget.

I've ridden that road 3 times and although it's absolutely beautiful during the day, I wholeheartedly recommend doing at least once at night. Had a choice of slow roasting during a 120+ day or an 80 degree night. So glad I did because now I fully understand how many stars are out there and how truly insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things. Sky was bright enough that a headlight was overkill. If any of you get a chance, even for just a couple of miles out of town, do it.
