Of course we want to see it lol. DEFINITELY going to try this method again. Been experimenting with limiting my color palettes and concentrating on values first anyway. THIS workflow really seems perfect for that

I learned this stuff a few months ago, but this is probably one of the most comprehensive videos about using layer masks. If only younger me had this😂

Masks rule for coloring. I use them for several years now. Once I started to do that I never go back to destructive workflow.

Definitely. Feels so archaic and chaotic to not use them lol

Hello Mr Manapul. First of all, thank you for sharing this video. It was very educative. I'd like to know if you don't prefer to use a "New fill layer" to create your layers. On the icone on the left of the group icone, if you choose the first option on the top (Solid Color) you have the same result with less effort and you can change colors easier. Thank you again and wish you the best for your next projects.

Thanks! This is a fantastic video, and I'll definitely be putting it to practice. I was trying another coloring method where the flats are duplicated and the copy has its saturation and luminosity changed for highlights and shadows, but it's not the same. It might take me a bit to learn your method, because I use Clip Studio but it should be fine. Thanks again!
@FrancisManapulArt4 жыл бұрын
Ah yeah, I've tried that. I couldn't quite get it to work for me because the shadow colors felt unpredictable. Might have to give it another try, but this way works for me, hope it works for you too!

I'm trying to do this in CSP and having trouble inverting the layer masks in the group. Has anyone figured out how to do this? I'm also confused about the "base color" layer, what is the purpose of that layer? is it to replace the flat colors? TIA
@FrancisManapulArt2 жыл бұрын
Not familiar with csp but I've heard there is something similar. The base color is mostly for me, as I like to color from dark to light. Usually the local colors are too bright so I put that layer in so I can see the rendering better. I then either turn it back off or brush in some elements of it for secondary lighting.
@JAMESCC882 жыл бұрын
@@FrancisManapulArt ok thanks! I've been working on a big piece for a few days and put a blue layer over my flats but under my rendering layer masks and raise and lower the opacity depending on how complex or simple the area is. It's slowly become more intuitive. Do you add extra layers for surfaces that have a higher specularity? Like an extra bright highlight layer for chrome or latex, for example.

Ok I’m finally getting around to trying this and I’ve got a question. So I made an homage piece that’s based on the famous Akira poster with the bike. So for the street itself I made a group with the three colors picked out for the shades. Now I’m moving onto the bike and mine has way more colors than the bike in the poster. Would you make a group for each color or would you just group all the colors of the bike and then shade and highlight over the whole thing? What about the transparent glass windshield?
@FrancisManapulArt4 жыл бұрын
I'd gtoup the bike. I typically just have two groups. One group for foreground and one for background. It keeps things simple.
