In this video, I'll discuss a coloring method I learned from Marvel colorist Tamra Bonvillain. It's very different from my usual method, but I thought it'd be cool to see another way of doing things.

I'm going to have to watch this again. Looks Interesting. It's like another way to have a color palette, but on your canvas.

Hi Kurt.... I had seen this video a while back but I had to view it again because I just viewed another artist's work where he paints realistic work in this same fashion using a lot of masks to go back and forth with color. I'm fascinated with the process and am giving it a try. Your friend's layer structure and use of masks almost mimic the other artist that I mentioned so it is obviously not something new, but so far it really does seem to blend colors very well if you use a very low opacity, soft brush with a mask. And like you said, if you need to go back because of a mistake or if you want to change color all you have to do is switch back to black. See, it pays to watch your videos more than once! Thanks.

At Heroes Con, Tamra was trying to explain this technique to me on Sunday while I was very tired and needless to say I was very confused, but curious. This makes WAY more sense to me. Thanks for the video! I think I could find some use for this for certain light sources that could spare me some headache.

Nice, finding quick shortcuts is essential to a productive consistent workflow, this kind of method is very similar in how I work in graphic design. The thing about workflow is it really depends on the artist, what works for them, may not work for you. Usually it's better going with what's the fastest and most comfortable for you.

Cool technique! Out of curiosity, how processing heavy is it compared to your normal method? I imagine you end up with alot of layers.

I really like the logic behind this. I fear my machine won't handle the number of layers.

This is not weird or different; it's what photoshop have being created for, it's the way you're meant to use it and how CG artists everywhere work on it.

Personnalité, Ive always worked with this kind of techniques for making shadows and lights. When I started I’ve searched a method to made my shadow in one color. And quickly Iused the mask to change the color of the shadows, and work easily to the based colors. Later I searched methods on internet and it was always a method with each elements separated by layers and each shadows is link by each the elements on layers. I found it very complicated and hard to made modifications. So I had kept my method that consist to separate my base colors and shadows and lights. This method is not new, it’s just use by few people who have search to create their own method and not copying one on the internet. No offense for those who uses others method, but I think art is not copying other’s technique, it’s created his own.

In a profession that _usually_ pays so little, especially for Indies titles, this has GOT to be pointlessly complex for little good reason. IMO, anyway...
