Shading miniatures adds more contrast to them and makes them more readable. Using a wash might be a good idea, but is there a way to shade your miniatures more easily? Today, we will also mention speedpainting methods for warhammer.
Today's sponsor is Shieldwolf Miniatures: www.kickstarte...
Have you ever wondered if there is a way that could be easier than washing your miniature to shade it? Well, using a wash to stack shades in the recesses might be effective when it comes to painting fur, bases, terrain and other stuff with a plenty of texture, but what about that flat armor? Space marines and tanks certainly don't enjoy full washes. Recess shading might be one of your options, but using oil wash or enamel wash for panel lining is also a great idea! Using washes like these will make them go straight into recesses, effectively panel lining your miniature.
Certainly, when I finally paint the entire half of my space marine indomitus box, I will use one of the faster panel lining methods mentioned instead of recess shading.

Thank you for the time you have taken to articulate this - exposure to one major presence in the mini-painting world has ingrained this “basecoat-wash-highlight” method to the point of becoming a Sacred Cow that is not to be questioned... until one has the epiphany that replicating the box art examples from this same company will never be achieved using this method alone.
@uriance88
@uriance88 3 жыл бұрын
Ninjon has a great video on replicating box art jsut using the colours listed on the box - it involves lots (and he means lots!) of glazing. And to be fair, even the Eavy Metal team admit that they don't just basecoat, wash, highlight when they do their work.

Excellent work - and I'm not talking about just this vid - I like the short/straight to the point format, tight narrative and punchy storytelling, without compromises on delivering key takeaways in clear visual form. I personally can't stand a 35 min tutorial on the subtleties of wet blending for instance. what I need is a few pointers to get me to try and that's exactly what you provide without the fluff. Keep it coming and I'm sure your audience will grow fast!

For textured species like dragons, I find that applying your shader colours before the colours you actually want it to be is much easier than using a wash. Especially if you're like me, and really enjoy doing colour gradients on their wings or belly that make applying a one-size-fits-all wash a nightmare. It does require a bit of planning beforehand, but its better than having to repaint entire sections because you misjudged, believe me

PS! The Micron pens are fragile and can easily clog up, using bigger size pen might work though. Can be expensive in the long run.
@Derlaid
@Derlaid 3 жыл бұрын
Black/Grey Contrast paint is also a compromise between washes and oil/enamel paints for recess shading. The contrast paint does a better job of flowing to the crevices of the model than washes. It's still not as precise/good as using an oil paint, and certainly more expensive, but it's less frustrating to use than a wash, and saves you from having to get into oil paints if you don't particularly want to.

Thank you for sharing; If we apply (1) the Gloss Varnish and then (2) Recess Shade and then (3) wish to apply Acrylic Paint, do we need to put Matt Varnish on first for the paint to adhere to? I am worried the Acrylic Paint may not adhere well to the Gloss Varnish. Your thoughts are welcomed.
@Zumikito

I apply the matt varnish whenever I need it after the recess shading, but the most important thing is to do it before painting the metallics. If you find out that the acrylic doesn't adhere the way you want it (maybe the paint is too thin), apply it right away
