Lorewise, the existence of "Trick Weapons" is due to the fact that Hunters are fighting Beasts, which are as terrifying to fight, as they are plenty and "diverse". Having a weapon that can become one of two things, within a fraction of a second, is what makes it so crucial to fight them. Using the example of the Saw Spear, the closed weapon mode allows for fast, and versatile fighting that is akin to hand-to-hand combat, making it easier for players to quickly attack and retreat, whereas the opened mode of the Saw Spear is slower but allows you to fight at a slightly longer range and the ability to deliver VERY powerful charged attacks for dealing with tougher oponents.
@KairuHakubi6 ай бұрын
I was just thinking the closed version would be better for putting a lot of your own force into it. For example, if you actually DID want to saw through something, you'd want your hand as close to it for direct pressure as possible. vs taking a swing, you would probably want to almost always extend it, unless you're already closed in on and trying to get your arm up between you and the horrible monster dog thing.

Kinda in the same vibe as the "Chinese Butterfly Swords". -Hunter Axe: a tacticool battleaxe that extends to the length of a polearm. -Reiterpallasch: literally inspired by historical weapons wherein a flintlock pistol is the handle for a duellist's rapier. -Rifle Spear: a spear that turns into a rifle with bayonet. Honourable mention -Rakuyo: a thin sword whose pommel can fit a dagger. It doesn't seem like it would be at all easy to use when both blades are together, but separated it's a whole different story. Sword and dagger is a pretty good combination of weapons. If I could "revise" that weapon, I'd make it so the handle of the sword was hollow and could fit the dagger's blade, so you'd instead have a sword with a larger handle when both blades are combined, rather than running the risk of stabbing yourself with the unprotected dagger.

I am by no means an expert, but (western) spear technique is all thrusts; no swinging or slashing. Thrusts are very controlled and linear. You aren't likely to hit the shaft of the spear against the wall if you are facing parallel to the wall. Only if your back was against the wall would that be an issue, but in that case, dropping the spear and drawing a sword will be easy enough in a moments time.

Hunters in BB are superhuman. They are superhumanly strong, superhumanly fast, and superhumanly durable. It may not appear that way, in game, but that is done simply for gameplay purposes. It's similar to the new GOW games and how Kratos isn't creating cracks in the earth with each step he takes but has to instead use a chain to climb up 10 feet. Just watch the Gehrman boss fight and that is only a small illustration of their capacity. But again, that is still vastly toned down for gameplay purposes. Hunters are immensely powerful beings, and even the lore states that firearms technology is so ineffective against larger beasts, that hunters had to take up massive blunt or bladed instruments to kill their prey. Think about how utterly dangerous these weapons would be in the hands of superhumans, and now you know why they look and function the way they do.

One of the big gameplay reasons for the transforming weapons is that the collapsed version can be used with one hand, allowing the hunter use a firearm in their offhand.
@fenorlex11266 ай бұрын
Additionally, even if that point was rendered moot by some Trick Weapons being already one-handed in either form, the extended mode typically offers either more range or damage at the expense of speed, handling or both.
@nyzurix25866 ай бұрын
Sooo... burial blade when? this was awesome though. nice work lads! EDIT: for the transformation of the weapon, gameplay wise they enable the player to string together different attacks and pull off more combos when attacking. the folded position on the saw spear also allows the player to swing the weapon faster and do bigger wind-up berserk attacks faster. as for weapons like the saw cleaver, the folded position matters on what youre fighting. in the videogame the serrations actually do additional damage against beasts, causing more bleeding. so lore wise, the reason why a hunter would switch between the two is not only the attack style, but to defeat beasts more efficiently. not only that, but most weapons in their folded (un-transformed) state can more easily be held in a one hand. this frees up their other hand for a firearm that hunters will carry. be it a blunderbuss, flintlock or even a cannon. another thing about the different hunter weapons; some weapons when transformed can change the weapon entirely! an example is the burial blade i mentioned above, its a curved sword until you transform it into a scythe. another example is the kirk hammer. longsword when one handed, giant two handed maul when two handed.
@Enaccul6 ай бұрын
One kind of attack in the game is when you use the transformation of the weapon AS the attack. Idk how hard it would be to make a mechanism like that, but its like spring loaded or something and can spring open and that motion is used to simultaneously transform the weapon and attack in a single motion, and can be part of a combo. Also the serrated weapons are specifically used on the beasts in the game (Or at least were designed to fight them, lore wise) and do bonus damage to beasts, who do not wear clothes.
@NarutoMagicCyclops6 ай бұрын
regular flip blades either utilize a bar locking mechanism(no idea what's actually called, it's literally a metal bar that runs the length of the handle) or a holding pin lock. It requires the blade itself to be designed around the concept which can be a mechanical challenge on how much material you'll need so it doesn't shear off or wear out too quickly as well as whatever is locking it into place being thick enough to counter the weight of whatever is hitting it. Certainly doable, but will add weight, not to mention keeping the blade stable enough so it doesn't wobble and stays relatively straight enough to lock into it's marginally safer collapsed position...

With straight edged knives you get the same experience cutting tomatoes as cutting water bottles: a very steep drop off in cutting performance once the blade dulls. @mikkohernborg52916 ай бұрын
Serrations are somewhat sensitive to the shape. A saw-like 'N'-type serration can get stuck, but a bread-knife 'W'-type serration much less so. Also, a saw has thick, non-beveled teeth since its function isn’t to cut, but to impact-break fibers by tearing a small piece out. If the serrations are beveled, they are much more likely to cut (which you don’t want in a saw, since it needs to make space for itself or it will jam). Interestingly, water bottles is probably an ideal medium to cut with a serrated edge, as it outperforms a straight edge on material with a tough but flexible outer 'skin' but interiors that don’t provide much support structurally. Like tomatoes… or giant insects (probably). But it would probably get seriously lodged if cutting into bone with some power.

Shad -- For FNT, when you get to Episode 4. As the sword expert point out that ALL of those Jedi igniting their light sabers standing shoulder to shoulder is incredibly dangerous. Maybe upload a short video of you doing 'flourishes' with a long sword to Gary, so the audience can see just how much space an individual (without a shield) needs to swing and deploy a single sword-like weapon. Then I would point out two other things: 1) The Romans, with armor and shield, had about 1m separation to the next soldier, standing about 2m from soldier to soldier. All to allow the free use of their swords... AND this was/is considered "Close formation". 2) Even in the SW Clone Wars videos, they did not ignite their light sabers next to each other. There is a lot of combat there, and after some quips, one Jedi would ignite their saber and trot forward deflecting blaster bolts, and the next would follow a few paces behind. ALL to give each of them room to swing freely. Question: How stupid are these Jedi? OR, how poorly trained are they? Followup: A sword has a flat side, in fact, most of it is non-threatening (only the edges). But a light saber is a 360 degree weapon, that can cut through anything from any angle or direction. Conclusion: The people making this have no idea what they are doing... on any level including the fight coordinators and weapons specialists. How the mighty have fallen from the sword play in the movies and even in the Animated series like the Clone Wars (which was supposedly Dave Filoni's 'baby'!)

Two things about the sawspear and the saw type trick weapons in general. The sawspear is (depite the name) still more of a swinging weapon than stabbing so there is *potentially* an argument for using the folded state in the alleys. So itll still catch but not *as* bad as if it were being used against armor.

Regarding the closed version of the weapon. I partially agree with the statement that it is not particularly practical and in the case of the sawspear it makes very little sense considering the ability to penetrate in addition to the cut, but a good part of the weapons in play rely on the cut precisely because in the world we need to spread blood, following this logic, closed and narrow environments that do not allow a cutting fight become problematic, certainly with a spear there is no problem but as mentioned the spear pierces and does not cut, tearing the flesh. In addition to this, the character is certainly superhuman just think of the kirkhammer who weighs something like 120/130kg (for those who don't know what the kirkhammer is, think about the legend of the sword in the stone, well take the sword with all the stone and you have the kirkhammer).

If Tyranth is including the DLC weapons when he says "all of them", then hoo boy things are gonna get fun.

Hunters using the saw spear are not and ever where meant to be used to hunt hunters, the weapon meant for hunting hunters are the blades of mercy, duel daggers

Ah Bloodborne. Nothing says fighting beasts like gardening with the whirling-gig saw + watering spray (flame-thrower) or letting a random eldritch parasite give you tentacles. Beast cutter will always be my favourite though. It is as elegant as a falling elephant and I love it.

I want to give context to the weapon. In bloodborne, splashing in enemy blood heals you a lot. So continuos attacking without regard for defense is encouraged. Trick weapons are made to deal with fast changing of distance, since your fighting beast, and all those serrations are to make the blood fly out.

Looking at how calmly Shad stands next to this beast-weapon, when the blade in the closed state looks straight into his face, and remembering how easily Tyrant in the video on his channel snapped the blade off the latch on the handle and how quickly the weapon fully opened... Guys, of course you are professionals and all that, but be careful there.

This is one of those weapons you could improve into an actual weapon really easily. Would love to see that if anyone has made such a thing.

Personally i think if you really built out the starting trick weapons seriously that they'd absolutely be functional and deadly. Learning curve? yeah most likely, but i doubt anyone would want to take a slash from one. Plus most weapons are paired with a pistol ( for parrying of course) Also to answer the question in the video ... Most practical? Hunter Axe - An Axe that gets longer or shorter. Blade of Mercy - One dagger becomes two . Chikage - Literally a Katana with blood on it. Church Pick - War pick type weapon. Rakuyo - Double blade sword. Think Darthmaul but swords. Rifle Spear - Yep. Rifle + Spear. Reiterpallash - Rapier + Pistol = holes in target at any range. Practical-ish if strong enough? Kirkhammer - A large stone hammer with a sword that comes out the handle. Ludwigs Holy Blade - A straight sword that's sheathe is a Great Sword. Stake Driver - Big stake meets jackhammer like gauntlet. Impractical but totally bad ass? Threaded Cane - bladed whip to cane transformation. Boom Hammer - Exactly what it sounds like. Whriligig Saw - Double sided buzz saw on a pole. Absolutely terrifying. Burial Blade - Transforming Scythe Most of the rest you'd need some Dark Lovecraftian magic to operate or make work. Aside from maybe that one weapon that's just a brick.

I love fantasy weapons that are well thought out to make sense in their world. And for a bit more merit on the closed position, these weapons are to deal with a plague of monstrous beasts who love to pounce and rip with claws and fangs. A hunter caught off guard or knocked over can still shred a beast that's all up in their business. it would fit in that arms length gap between them and the squishy underbelly of snarling beasts

Another important detail is that not many enemies in bloodborne wear armor. A lot of exposed flesh.

One thing of note is that most if not all Bloodborne weapons are intended for use with one hand, at least part of the time. This is so the Hunter can use firearms and other items that can be invaluable when fighting beasts. That being said, I'd love to see a take on the Logarius Wheel, the largest weapon in both states.

The main reason this weapon transforms is because between 1 to 2 handed weapon allowing to free another hand mid fight to use stuff like molotovs or guns.

The most practical Bloodborne weapons are probably the axe and the Moonlight greatsword, one is just a magical sword and the axe you just make the handle longer And yeah, makes sense sharp serrations are effective lmao specially when are meant for armorless foes like beasts
@jackmcslay6 ай бұрын
I think striking with the serrations works that well because it's like multiple stabs in one, and then they gradually converge until it cuts

I'm a simple man. I see Bloodborne, I see Shadiversity, I click.
@ebonslayer33216 ай бұрын
My first thought is the raw power of the weapon allows it to push through regardless of the serrations. That is a very big blade on a long handle with a bunch of cloth wrapped around both pieces, the kinetic energy it could generate is likely very intense.
@gabrielgaite93766 ай бұрын
i thought the reason weapons were like that in bloodborne was to have something easy to carry from town to town while being able to breakdown the bodies of large beast. because you know... they're hunters
@NINJASNIPER776 ай бұрын
I think the Blade of Mercy or the Hunter Axe are probably the most practical weapons to try out

if Tyranth ever builds a stake driver mock-up, he neds to pay attention to the shafts on both sides, because there's a neat detail that took me a second to notice

I always felt the Bloodborne cleavers in the closed position would be good off-hand weapons to protect the body, while still having a blade to attack at close range.
@robertsmith46816 ай бұрын
I mean, this thing is basically a folding saw/oversized folding knife. I can see how that would be useful both as a tool and a close defense weapon.
@scousewillo626 ай бұрын
I watched the vid where Tyranth made that blade and was very impressed at the quality of the final blade. To see how effective it is in use was very surprising. If used against lightly armoured or unarmoured opponents it would be devastating with its tearing and shredding due to the serrations and quite capable of very deep wounds . Very entertaining

I would recommend installing some kind of stoper at the hinge, if you haven't already, to prevent the blade from ever getting close to your fingers even on accident. The end of the weapon already stops the blade but you can never to careful when a saw blade is close to your fingers. Redundancy and safety go hand-in-hand. Maybe add a hand guard as well near the top as well.

Rather than most practical, I offer my favorite least practical weapon: The threaded cane. The threaded cane is a sword cane style weapon with segmented blades that are spooled tightly together using a metal wire. When transformed the wire is extended and becomes a bladed whip. A practice built would require some kind of motor or mechanical means of manipulating the length of the wire.

Yay! I got recommended this video! Also that weapon looks epic!

The Hunter axe feels like an exceptional piece, if you have the strength to wield the thing. You'd probably have to make it a bit smaller, but it's basically a weighty one-handed ax, where you can pull the handle further out into a two-handed weapon like a halberd. Aside from that, the threaded cane would be extremely difficult to build and maintain, but has potential. A serrated whip that also doubles as a sharpened club. I suppose the cane would have to have a button that allows you to adjust the tension on the go.

the moment I saw one of those i was like "This feels like something the maker of the machete, the scythe, and the branch-cutting pole saw would bring you" it's... pretty practical-looking by fantasy weapon standards.
