Lorewise, the existence of "Trick Weapons" is due to the fact that Hunters are fighting Beasts, which are as terrifying to fight, as they are plenty and "diverse". Having a weapon that can become one of two things, within a fraction of a second, is what makes it so crucial to fight them. Using the example of the Saw Spear, the closed weapon mode allows for fast, and versatile fighting that is akin to hand-to-hand combat, making it easier for players to quickly attack and retreat, whereas the opened mode of the Saw Spear is slower but allows you to fight at a slightly longer range and the ability to deliver VERY powerful charged attacks for dealing with tougher oponents.
@KairuHakubi
@KairuHakubi Ай бұрын
I was just thinking the closed version would be better for putting a lot of your own force into it. For example, if you actually DID want to saw through something, you'd want your hand as close to it for direct pressure as possible. vs taking a swing, you would probably want to almost always extend it, unless you're already closed in on and trying to get your arm up between you and the horrible monster dog thing.

Precisely. Although impractical, the whole point of the default/folded mode of the saw weapons and Hunter’s axe are for more speed and personal fighting. They are close range, and quick. It may not deal as much damage per hit, but it makes up for it with damage over time, which is valuable in a game that rewards fighting back upon taking damage (in order to regain the lost health). Logically, it’s impractical. Lore and gameplay-wise, it’s a must have, especially when you can combo into your trick.

A reason you might be surprised the serrated edges work so well is because factory serrated edges suck. I got a knife with serrated edges and I got a file set small enough for knife serrations so after I sharpened it, it was scary sharp. 12:07 I don't think there is a "most" practical, by realistic standards, buuut... It's definitely one of following: -Blades of Mercy: literally a pair of dual daggers that use magnetism to fit together. Kinda in the same vibe as the "Chinese Butterfly Swords". -Hunter Axe: a tacticool battleaxe that extends to the length of a polearm. -Reiterpallasch: literally inspired by historical weapons wherein a flintlock pistol is the handle for a duellist's rapier. -Rifle Spear: a spear that turns into a rifle with bayonet. Honourable mention -Rakuyo: a thin sword whose pommel can fit a dagger. It doesn't seem like it would be at all easy to use when both blades are together, but separated it's a whole different story. Sword and dagger is a pretty good combination of weapons. If I could "revise" that weapon, I'd make it so the handle of the sword was hollow and could fit the dagger's blade, so you'd instead have a sword with a larger handle when both blades are combined, rather than running the risk of stabbing yourself with the unprotected dagger.

Choking a spear in close qualter deserves more investigation. That left almost a meter of spear shaft behind which if you were maneuvering in close qualters there's a high chance the butt of the shaft could hit a wall, table, colums or other stuff, disrupting your aim, missing a parry or strike
@RealLifeIronMan
@RealLifeIronMan Ай бұрын
I am by no means an expert, but (western) spear technique is all thrusts; no swinging or slashing. Thrusts are very controlled and linear. You aren't likely to hit the shaft of the spear against the wall if you are facing parallel to the wall. Only if your back was against the wall would that be an issue, but in that case, dropping the spear and drawing a sword will be easy enough in a moments time.

@@RealLifeIronManGood points in general but not here. Beasts do not die unless drained of blood and regenerate constantly, hence why you want wide mangled wounds. Piercing is ineffective as it creates small clean holes (bullets are useless unless the hunter reaches into the injury and rips); even with the saw spear, you only want to stab to finish the target off as the beasts are so fast that you always need your weapons to be free. Swords are used against newly scourged people and are not going to work against anything that can corner a hunter.

Hunters in BB are superhuman. They are superhumanly strong, superhumanly fast, and superhumanly durable. It may not appear that way, in game, but that is done simply for gameplay purposes. It's similar to the new GOW games and how Kratos isn't creating cracks in the earth with each step he takes but has to instead use a chain to climb up 10 feet. Just watch the Gehrman boss fight and that is only a small illustration of their capacity. But again, that is still vastly toned down for gameplay purposes. Hunters are immensely powerful beings, and even the lore states that firearms technology is so ineffective against larger beasts, that hunters had to take up massive blunt or bladed instruments to kill their prey. Think about how utterly dangerous these weapons would be in the hands of superhumans, and now you know why they look and function the way they do.

Sooo... burial blade when? this was awesome though. nice work lads! EDIT: for the transformation of the weapon, gameplay wise they enable the player to string together different attacks and pull off more combos when attacking. the folded position on the saw spear also allows the player to swing the weapon faster and do bigger wind-up berserk attacks faster. as for weapons like the saw cleaver, the folded position matters on what youre fighting. in the videogame the serrations actually do additional damage against beasts, causing more bleeding. so lore wise, the reason why a hunter would switch between the two is not only the attack style, but to defeat beasts more efficiently. not only that, but most weapons in their folded (un-transformed) state can more easily be held in a one hand. this frees up their other hand for a firearm that hunters will carry. be it a blunderbuss, flintlock or even a cannon. another thing about the different hunter weapons; some weapons when transformed can change the weapon entirely! an example is the burial blade i mentioned above, its a curved sword until you transform it into a scythe. another example is the kirk hammer. longsword when one handed, giant two handed maul when two handed.

One kind of attack in the game is when you use the transformation of the weapon AS the attack. Idk how hard it would be to make a mechanism like that, but its like spring loaded or something and can spring open and that motion is used to simultaneously transform the weapon and attack in a single motion, and can be part of a combo. Also the serrated weapons are specifically used on the beasts in the game (Or at least were designed to fight them, lore wise) and do bonus damage to beasts, who do not wear clothes.
@NarutoMagicCyclops
@NarutoMagicCyclops Ай бұрын
regular flip blades either utilize a bar locking mechanism(no idea what's actually called, it's literally a metal bar that runs the length of the handle) or a holding pin lock. It requires the blade itself to be designed around the concept which can be a mechanical challenge on how much material you'll need so it doesn't shear off or wear out too quickly as well as whatever is locking it into place being thick enough to counter the weight of whatever is hitting it. Certainly doable, but will add weight, not to mention keeping the blade stable enough so it doesn't wobble and stays relatively straight enough to lock into it's marginally safer collapsed position...

I think the serrations were also to ensure the weapon's cuts weren't "too clean" and make it harder for beasts to regenerate. (Beasts don't actually regenerate in-game, but they do take 20% more damage from serrated weapons) I think I remember Matt Easton reading an account of a british soldier fighting a middle-eastern tribesman, wherein the tribesman is described as holding his curved sword with his right arm, with the back of the sword against his left forearm, then rushing through a crowd into grappling range, too close for the british soldiers to use their rifles or draw their sidearms, and then repeatedly slashed them across the chest. Makes me think of the beasthunter saif, and how in-universe hunters would have to fight amid streets more crowded than the PS4 could actually render, and get into grappling range against werewolves and such.

I mean, this thing is basically a folding saw/oversized folding knife. I can see how that would be useful both as a tool and a close defense weapon.

The Hunter axe feels like an exceptional piece, if you have the strength to wield the thing. You'd probably have to make it a bit smaller, but it's basically a weighty one-handed ax, where you can pull the handle further out into a two-handed weapon like a halberd. Aside from that, the threaded cane would be extremely difficult to build and maintain, but has potential. A serrated whip that also doubles as a sharpened club. I suppose the cane would have to have a button that allows you to adjust the tension on the go.

Two things about the sawspear and the saw type trick weapons in general. The sawspear is (depite the name) still more of a swinging weapon than stabbing so there is *potentially* an argument for using the folded state in the alleys. As for the serrations, as mentioned it is to get as much blood as possible, and also they are fighting either completely or mostly unarmored enemies. So itll still catch but not *as* bad as if it were being used against armor.

I think Shad is so impressed by how well the serrations work because of the targets they are using. Plastic bottles only have structural integrity in the surface. If you cook, you know that things with tough skin and soft insides (like tomatoes) are best cut with serrated knives. With straight edged knives you get the same experience cutting tomatoes as cutting water bottles: a very steep drop off in cutting performance once the blade dulls. You probably would have had a different experience if you tested these against pool noodles (or meat/ meat analogues).

Thank you for using the (superior to the cleaver) saw spear. Just for added depth Shad, the closed or untransformed state benefits from increased speed at the sacrifice of range and vice versa. (something to consider with positioning in pvp) Also, the transformation itself can be a very powerful attack and you can chain them all together. Yes, Sony, please release Bloodborne on PC.

In regard to the serrations, remember that these are beast-hunting weapons and so are not meant to deal with armor or really even clothing. The beasts are weak to bleeding so the weapons want to make them bleed as much as possible; so they are meant to rip and tear more than cleanly cut or stab.

I think striking with the serrations works that well because it's like multiple stabs in one, and then they gradually converge until it cuts

Obviously the most practical Bloodborne weapon is Ludwig's Holy Blade. If I remember correctly, you even mentioned it once on this channel, in video about giant swords. The idea of Holy Blade being just a regular longsword that can be transformed in giant sword for crowd control or large enemies is pretty simple, yet incredibly effective

I'm gonna vote the telescopic axe as the most practical Bloodborne weapon. Want to hit something up-close and personal? One-handed mode. Want to spin-to-win or overhead chop from a (relatively) safe distance? Two-handed mode.

You all need to do two things next: 1) Try making a Threaded Cane next. I love that weapon and would love to see someone attempt to make a real life version. 2) Make Shad play Bloodborne. It's so awesome and it's what I'm playing to kill time before the Elden Ring DLC drops.

Ah Bloodborne. Nothing says fighting beasts like gardening with the whirling-gig saw + watering spray (flame-thrower) or letting a random eldritch parasite give you tentacles. Beast cutter will always be my favourite though. It is as elegant as a falling elephant and I love it.

I would recommend installing some kind of stoper at the hinge, if you haven't already, to prevent the blade from ever getting close to your fingers even on accident. The end of the weapon already stops the blade but you can never to careful when a saw blade is close to your fingers. Redundancy and safety go hand-in-hand. Maybe add a hand guard as well near the top as well.

So the thing with the saw side of the saw spear/cleaver, ect. Properly taken care of it will still cut into flesh fairly well. Its the pulling out adding the damage everyone thinks of. Plus added damage it can do to bone when pulled out. Its still can cut maybe just not to the degree of a straight blade.

I watched the vid where Tyranth made that blade and was very impressed at the quality of the final blade. To see how effective it is in use was very surprising. If used against lightly armoured or unarmoured opponents it would be devastating with its tearing and shredding due to the serrations and quite capable of very deep wounds . Very entertaining

i think some sort of trigger activated clasp for the blade that lets it switch back and forth between positions might make it more practical, since the main problem with the position switching trick weapons just seems to be the give in the joint that controls its position. not sure itd ever be as easy to swap as in the games, but i can see a lot of them becoming much more practical when you dont have to worry that you might accidentally hit yourself with it.

In close position think of it as a brass knuckle you use it in very close combat where you hook it in their face and yes the beast are very fast they can close in on you before you can get into any stance so you have to brawl with it.
