Bought a piece from a company called Southern Swords a few years ago. Was meant to be a cheapo (£200-£250) blade that would perform one cut for a close shot and then just act as a prop for the rest of the project - we even paid an extra £40 or something to have it "professionally sharpened". The thing arrives wrapped it oily cling film with wobbly fittings, a blade so blunt it couldn't cut a thing, a loose fitting scabbard, and a wire handle wrap that sliced two of our team members hands open. Complained to the company, but they said something to the extent that "the blade isn't sharp because it's not a katana". Yeah... wouldn't recommend that retailer. We did our research properly on our next project and ended up buying a Tinker longsword from a different supplier, and the thing performed flawlessly. Do your research, people!

@@rojalD I've had swords of northsire bookmarked for years for when i get my first sword. Are they decent quality? Havent heard much about them recently
@rojalD15 сағат бұрын
@@TheRealDredd so... A general tip, I wouldn't pay more than 200 USD for a katana, as a beginner. There are very cheap a d good enough options out there. For example hanbon forge and ryan swords, with whom I have very good experiences, as they don't drop ship. About your question, if I'm not mistaken, northsire is 'only' a reseller/ drop shipper. Meaning you will get the sword, maybe even a quality one, but probably pay more than you should. In general, if you don't mind the price increase, you should only be weary of what steel they use. (Everything sub 1065, you should keep away from and even this type of Steel can't keep a sharp edge for too long, t10, spring steel, 1095 are way better options) This is the case as everything for katanas are (in the sub 200 USD range), if you're not paying a premium for the shadow dancer, Z-Sey, tozando or nine-circles swords, mass produced. You're getting the same blades, with the same blade profile, the same grip, the same mass produced fittings (the cheapest ones are plastic and have casting seams, that just look terrible) and the same type of relatively bad saja with a terrible sageo. The only difference might be how well they managed to put everything together, how sharp the blade is and maybe what type of ito they use.
@rojalD15 сағат бұрын
@@TheRealDredd on the site I've mostly seen 1065 steel swords, which is a downer, as they look quite good at first glance. And the prices seem stupidly high for some 1095 steel swords.

Just buy a budget Chinese one probably in the 100-200 bucks range. As long as its good carbon steel. You'll get a good blade but no real leather and finish on the look is not the best etc... The thing most people miss about price is they assume the higher the cost the higher the quality. I can guarantee that I can make a turkey sandwhich and sell it to you for $1 or $100 depending on whatever you are willing to pay as long as I do a good job selling it to you. I personally find as a firearm enthusiast that often times budget guns perform about as well as higher end guns. You are mostly paying for additional labor that doesn't matter to the functional quality of the item.
@brighamfish71318 сағат бұрын
I think the perception of price=quality comes from the not so distant past. There was indeed a time where buying a pretty cheap gun or sword would have left you with a really shoddy piece of equipment. Paying more generally gave you better quality. However, manufacturing practices and costs have gotten to a point where even a relatively low priced firearm can be excellent in quality. Ruger and Glock make excellent firearms that function very well. They have differences that you may or may not like (I hate Glock triggers with a passion) but they are still good quality tools. Swords have gone the same way. Anymore the extra price you are paying is for, frankly, details. Fancy engravings, authentic materials, traditional methods of smithing. These are all things that don't actually matter if you just want a tool that does its intended job.
@slydoorkeeper47835 сағат бұрын
@@brighamfish713 Especially these days with the metallurgy. Bad steel back then would have far different performance than cheap steels today. Cheap steels (designed for a specific purpose of course) can perform very similarly to the more expensive steels of the same purpose. From there, it really just comes down to use and abuse the user is going to subject the sword to.

As someone who is actually practicing Iaido, there are a lot of things you can spend money on, on a sword. The Tsuba and the other fittings can reach prices beyond good and evil. Especially when it comes to real Japanese products. I have a tsuba for over 500 US$, which today, it think is a ridiculous price, but artistically, it's just incredibly beautiful. The average consumer won't see the difference, though. The Saja is another point, you can spend a lot. But a point in which i would say, it's worth it to pay more. Having to use force to unsheathe your katana is a drag and will reduce your happiness with the product. Also rattling and other sounds when sheaved are reducing at least my enjoyment. The sageo is important for Iaido, but someone who won't even use it, the cheapest is absolutely fine. Just looks shit to someone who knows. The type of material for the grip will depend on your preference. If you don't care about the look, don't bother with real rayskin. It will look shit, but hey. However handle shape, silk, cotton or leather will change how it feels. But won't change the cutting capacity significantly. If you're interested in an actually artistically made katana, you might find katanas from tozando or nine circles. Most other sellers are just selling mass produced stuff, you will find in the next shop.

I must be getting old....Always thought that was called a Kris. Though a collector, I personally never wanted one because European sailors felt confident in using sticks to protect themselves from them. Apparently, they were made from such low-quality steel that a solid hit on the blade would bend it away from the handle and make it pretty hard to use in a fight. Of course, this was in the 18th-19th century, early 20th century - So perhaps they're made from better steel nowadays. But I've flex-tested a few in antique stores and you can tell when something will bend easily, so I tend to believe the old stories...

@ I could be wrong but my understanding is that they were mostly ceremonial weapons used as a symbol more than an actual weapon. A sign of status, token of bravery, and such. We all want a sword that does sword things. The question is, is one of those things appearance? Is it as important as balance, edge retention, and so on? That’s down to personal preference. I am reminded of Shad pointing out that medieval scabbards were typically brightly painted because people loved color in all things, yet we don’t find that in modern reproductions. Why not? Because most people aren’t aware of it and think that single-color dyed leather is the proper way to go. Hell, decorated scabbards aren’t even available from most sword makers, while the decorative options are practically standard with katanas because everyone is aware that they were traditionally decorated. If you saw a katana in a catalog that had a nice blade but had a plain, undecorated tsuba, a plain black lacquered saya, and so on, you would probably be slightly offended, right? Yet that’s perfectly fine in a longsword. If the word “scam” should come up it’s in relation to unpainted medieval scabbards.

15:53 Spring steel is only 150usd cheaper than the S5 option so no, BUT the sword _can_ easily go below the 1K mark if you don't excessively splurge on the options other than blade/handle length, and probably less than a third of that price if you simply choose Hanbon Forge instead of Shadow Dancer (but options change a LOT between them so harder to make a direct comparison) Like for example, õkatana length blade costs 300usd extra with Shadowdancer, but just 50usd with Hanbon. So if you want a proper comparison between Swordis and ROM you kinda need to get one from the Hanbon version of the builder to make it much more comparable in price

I'm with Tyranth, a $1700 sword may as well be called a $2000 sword. Perfectly reasonable to round up 15%, some places charge a 10% sales tax, and that'd only leave 5% for shipping/import. And saving up $1700 vs $2000 isn't a huge difference-if it takes forever to get $300, then what's one extra forever when you already had to save for 6?

The 200 and 2000 dollar swords having a lot of the same parts and not actually being much different in quality seems to be particularly a Katana problem. Maybe because there really arent many big companies that make high priced European swords there is Albion and Lockwood as really the only sizeable companies that make really expensive swords for well over a thousand up to couple thousand. Fortunately both these companies have a reputation for being expensive precisely because they are extremely well made and high quality. A few more that make stuff in the 500 - to 1000 range that is maybe more variable. Like Darksword armoury i hear mixed things about. Regenyei I hear are pretty good for upper mid price range stuff.

Tyranth being someone who is looking for the best tool you can buy for the money. Shad who loves the art of the sword and the craft that goes into it. Personally, I'm more on Tyranth's side but I do agree with a lot of what Shad's saying as well. Swords can be expensive but aren't meant to be used as tools and that's fine, as long as they are artfully that way. Think of it like a painting, sure you can just print out a picture and hang it, but actually being able to see the strokes of paint has a certain charm to it. Then you get to replica's, and while I would say there's nothing wrong with replica's I just wouldn't use them as if they weren't replica's. In aliexpress china those copper fittings with gold paint and rayskin silk handle cost around 40 dollar combined so these parts really dont add any value unless its a custom made one

It is not the money that makes the sword for it is the sword that makes the money.

DIY is the best, hands down. Anything you choose or effortfully make yourself with the right skills and knowledge and so will always be high ended. Expensive=wall decor Cheap=real friggin sword

A fun video could be handing each other a katana blindfolded with light gloves and guessing the price.

I love the detail talk but I bought a $50 tactical Gladius and I'm happy with it. 28 inches of Roman practicality. And a conceal carry.

If I were a manufacturer, I wouldn't be offended by what you've said in this video. I'd imagine that there's pros and cons for just about every option they offer, and some features are better for some customers' use cases than others.

This is why armies of old just gave their soldiers a bunch of pointy sticks. They work and they’re cheap. Plus, and tyranth can probably confirm this, they tend to be quicker to make. Long live king spear😅

It's like how, I own a hakam din set of Uilleann Pipes. They sound exactly like the thousands dollars bagpipes that you hear in braveheart and Rob Roy and Titanic. And I only purchased them for... under three hundred dollars(the bag the bellows the pipe chanter). Whereas, if I was getting them from Ireland, etc, it would be probably in the thousands. It's all about what price they want. Same principle applies for swords. Even the pipe chanter alone, online can go for hundreds of dollars.

While this might be true in your case. I can tell you as a musician that price points matter A LOT with instruments. To get an actually decent performing Instrument you usually have to spend around $500 US. Some instruments can vary. Guitars you can go cheaper on just because of how popular they are that there is so much supply it drives the price down. Hurdy gurdys though? You need to be spending around $2000-2500 US to get a proper sounding instrument. What I'm trying to say is, not every high priced item is priced so high for nothing. There is a lot of nuance to pricing and quality for many products, but especially instruments.

@brighamfish713 it all depends upon who makes it. Whether a highly priced bagpipe so that the tradition can be preserved and the Craftsman keep business, or something else, it's about who does the job. Typically, yes, you have to pay a hug price for a quality Bagpipe, Scottish or Irish. But there are exceptions.

I've often noticed in storefronts that I've seen, they mention how good the blade is, but not so much the rest of it. And they love to shove the buzzword "premium" wherever they can. They said it's premium so you know it must be good, right? The handle certainly wont have the blade slip out of it and fly off.

Awesome episode guys! Would love maybe even a studio episode on what those potential scams look like online. You would probably have to blur out all the manufacturers info to prevent any libel claims but the KINDS of listings that are scammy and the vocab and kinds of websites to stay wary of. Also websites that are legit! Maybe highlight some of your partners that don’t sound legit *cough*RoM*cough* but are actually making an awesome product. How do you know that website is the real deal? Thats just my two cents but I love these big picture episodes. Thanks guys!

Good talk guys ! I have an older katana made from crappy 1045. Gonna check out Romance. Also, I'd love to see some coldsteel swords tested here. Thanks again Shad and Tyranth!

I love your debates. ❤ I recently purchased an O-Katana from Cold Steel, and being 6'3", it is huge! Yes it is mass-produced, and it has a jagged edge. But I've carried their pocket/utility blades for decades. Wether you spend $300, or $3000, the value and effectiveness might be the same. (I sleep with a machete that I used to clear bamboo/brush) 😂

Hey Shad, I’m a fan of Katana’s. However, I love long swords that are well made. Looking forward to your long sword video, and where to buy them 💪🔥
